Roulette: The Outside Bets
by Wilson of Predictem.com
In American roulette a player can wager on several combinations of bets. Perhaps the most conservative or easiest bets to make are those found on the outer part of the roulette layout. These bets are known as the outside bets due to their location. The payoffs are definitely less intriguing than their counterpart – the inside bets. However, the outside bets are more likely to show as a win for a player than most of the inside bets. Its purely a matter of probability. Lets take a look at some of the most common outside bets at the roulette table.
RED – When you approach the roulette table you will see the word Red labeled in its own marked box nearly centered on the outside of the layout. By placing at least the minimum bet in this box youre betting that the next number that shows will be the color red. If youre right, you win. The payoff is 1 to 1 (even odds).
BLACK – Just like the red bet, if you place the correct amount chips on the black labeled box, which is right next to the red box, you will win if the next number shows black. This bet also pays 1 to 1.

EVEN – This bet is located usually to the left of the red box. By betting in the even box you are gambling on the next number that shows being an even number. Thats all there is to it! If its even you win. This bet pays even money or 1 to 1. For example, if you place a $25 chip on even and the number 4 shows, you will be paid $25.
ODD – Again, just like the even bet, the odd bet simply means that the
player who places a wager in the odd box is counting on an odd number to be
the next number on the wheel. This bet also pays 1 to 1.
LOW BET (1-18)
– This bet indicates that the player is counting on the numbers 1-18 to show
on the next spin of the wheel. The payoff for this bet is even money. For
example, to bet $5 on the numbers 1-18, you place $5 in the box marked low
or it may be marked as 1-18 which is located on the outside of the layout,
usually to the left of the even box.
HIGH BET (19-36) – This bet is
simply betting that the next spin of the wheel will show the numbers 19-36.
This bet is also located on the outside of the layout, and the payoff is 1
to 1. The high or 19-36 box is usually directly next to the odd box.
COLUMN
BET – A player is betting on a particular column of numbers to show when
they make this wager. Remember, there are three rows or columns of numbers,
not including the 0, 00. These bets are located at the bottom of each column
of numbers. The payoff for the column bet is 2 to 1. For example if you bet
on the column of numbers 1-34 by placing a $10 chip in the 2 to 1 box you
would win $20 if the numbers show.
DOZEN BET – This is betting that
a certain dozen of numbers will show on the next spin of the wheel. For example,
you can wager on the first dozen (1-12) the second dozen (13-24) or the third
dozen (25-36). This bet also pays 2 to 1, just the same as the column bet.
There are several ways to bet in roulette, but I personally like to balance out my chips throughout the table thus wagering some on the inside and the outside. But no matter how you betem, its nice to know what each bet means along with what it’s payouts are – always take the time to learn the game, even if the bets appear to be self explanatory it never hurts to ask, or to do a little research. Luck to ya.
