The Washington Commanders battle the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC East battle on Monday Night Football in week ten action from Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles are coming off a bit of a long week, following a 29-17 win over the Texans last Thursday or their eighth straight win to open the season. Washington lost on Sunday in a bit of a heartbreaker to the Vikings, 20-17. Looking to keep their faint hopes alive, they now go into Philly to take on what looks to be the top force in the NFC. Who can get us the cover on MNF?
A Brief Look Back
Enough has changed to make the Eagles’ week three win over Washington at FedEx Field not much of a concern, perhaps. It really wasn’t even that close, with a safety and last-minute TD with things already sewn up, making it look a little better for the Commanders in what was really total domination. Washington has a few different pieces in there now, namely QB Taylor Heinicke. It could give a different look. Most notable from that game was the aerial alacrity of Jalen Hurts, who threw for 340 yards, connecting well with receivers AJ Brown and especially DeVonta Smith.
I’m not sure that the playing field hasn’t changed a little bit. We’re starting to see better results from a Washington defense that was looking really ragged to start the season. Heading into the narrow loss against the Vikings on Sunday, they had won three straight games. The defense has given up a total of 64 points in their last four games and held their own nicely against the Vikings last week overall. And not that Heinicke is the answer at quarterback, but over the last few seasons, we’ve actually seen the offense get a little spurt with him in there, sometimes giving way to better play from key contributors like WR Terry McLaurin and RB Antonio Gibson. In other words, even though Philly has been doing nothing but winning since these teams first met, maybe they’ll have a tougher game on their hands this week.
Why Going Against Philly is Dangerous
The thing about the Eagles this season is that they don’t need all kinds of pulleys and levers working in sync with the stars lining up right for their formula for success to take hold. What the Eagles do has a way of showing up every week—stellar line play on both sides of the ball, a versatile run game that is hard to stop, and an aerial attack that is rich in options. If one thing doesn’t really work, they have other things they can use to bridge the gap. And we saw how it came off the first time these teams played. While that can oftentimes be a faulty compass, Washington getting a safety and a garbage-time TD might not be all that atypical of what they can expect against a steady and reliable team like the Eagles.
When going against the Eagles in a spot like this, you’re maybe forecasting something being off with them, more than something good about their opponent. And sure, with room to spare in the NFC East, they can afford a slip-up or maybe even exorcise that perfect-record demon that seems more of a distraction than anything. You could maybe say that Heinicke offers some upside or dependability that Wentz did not in week three in this very matchup. But to fancy Washington, you at least have to project some sort of let-up from the Eagles, and that can be a dicey game to play. Still, with the Eagles unbeaten and taking on teams under .500, these numbers are getting quite big. And there are some characteristics that the Eagles have that make covering big numbers a little iffier than is with other teams. Not that they haven’t dropped the hammer this season, but a run-heavy team that relies on “D” a lot doesn’t always lay it on thick enough to make covering these jumbo spreads a breeze.

X-Factors
Will the gap in motivation resonate this week? For Washington, this is a chance to lend some real credibility to their season while getting back to even at 5-5. For the Eagles, it’s maybe just another game. When you take Washington’s recent form, three straight wins, and then a narrow loss to a strong Vikings team, doesn’t it seem like there are better teams to lay this many points against right now? You have to be careful with teams like Washington, where you lock in one perception and hang onto that even though things imperceptibly change. I’d say Washington’s improvement over the last month has gone by without much notice. And while it doesn’t put them in a position to rise to contention perhaps, maybe it’s enough to rate them as something other than a hopeless sparring partner coming into town on MNF.
Take the Points
A Washington defense that is playing better when they allowed a respectable 24 points to the Eagles last time around might be able to keep this one from getting out of hand. The Eagles don’t always spike high point totals, and if the Commanders can continue to see fewer mistakes on offense with Heinicke and hit the scoreboard a few times, I think covering this number might be a bit of an uphill battle. Having since tightened up against the run and the pass, I see the Washington defense helping keep this one from getting too out of hand. I’ll take the Commanders and the points.
