The New York Jets earned their first victory of the season, in dramatic fashion, in last week’s 27-24 overtime thriller against the Tennessee Titans. Despite trailing 9-0 in the first half, the Jets’ found life behind rookie quarterback Zach Wilson who completed 21 of 34 passing for 297 yards with two touchdowns and a pick. In many ways, it was a confidence-building performance for the Jets’ offense which featured another big performance from WR Corey Davis and also saw the return of WR Jamison Crowder. Needless to say, the Jets will try to build on last week’s victory when they travel across the pond to meet the Atlanta Falcons at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
This Sunday’s meeting between the Falcons and Jets will be the first of two NFL games held in London this season, with the Dolphins/Jaguars following suit next week. The Atlanta Falcons will officially be the “home” team this week against the Jets following a heartbreaking 34-30 loss to the Washington Football Team in Atlanta. The Falcons got a big performance from QB Matt Ryan who tossed four touchdowns aided by the continuing emergence of WR Cordarrelle Patterson, who had the biggest game of his career with 116 all-purpose yards with three touchdowns. Unfortunately, it was a different story for the Falcons defense, who failed to stop WR Terry McLaurin for the majority of the game and then completely unraveled on Washington’s final possession with less than 2 minutes to go. On Sunday, the Falcons will be favored by 3.5 points for just the 2nd time since week 9 of 2020.
New York Jets vs. Atlanta Falcons Betting Analysis
In the 2nd week of the season, I labeled the Falcons the worst team in the NFC and stated that they were likely the 2nd worst team in the NFL behind the New York Jets. Perhaps, this weekend’s game will settle the score on who is the worst team in the NFL though many would also like to throw the Jaguars into that conversation. For this weekend’s trip to London, this is really a difficult match-up to predict mainly because of the inconsistency from both teams. The Falcons obviously have some legitimate talent on the offensive side of the ball with veteran QB Matt Ryan, WR Calvin Ridley, and rookie TE Kyle Pitts. From a talent standpoint, the Falcons clearly have the better personnel at this time.
The problem for the Falcons is two-fold in that the offensive line is horrendous, and the defense cannot stop anyone, which was evident in last week’s 34 point allowance to Washington QB Taylor Heinicke. While the Jets hardly have an offense that can be trusted, I do think they will get plenty of opportunities this week to build Zach Wilson’s confidence. Personally, I like what I have seen out of Wilson despite some questionable play calling. Considering the Jets have a healthy Jamison Crowder and WR Corey Davis continues to produce, I’m expecting the Jets to move the football regularly and create scoring opportunities. Where this match-up will ultimately be decided is with the Jets’ defense and their ability to get to Matt Ryan. If the Jets fail to put pressure on Ryan, I could see them falling behind and trailing all game. Unfortunately for Atlanta, the Falcons offensive front cannot stop anyone. Additionally, the Jets have an underrated pass rush led by Quinnen Williams, Bryce Huff, and John Franklin-Myers. As a result, I am siding with the Jets defense to disrupt Atlanta’s pass protection and pull out another mild-upset.
