Where to begin with these two teams? Both the Miami Dolphins
and New York Jets sit at 1-1 in a four-way tie atop the
AFC East. Its too early for that to mean much, but this matchup is a division
rivalry and could have implications as the season wears on. It also interesting
to note that the two teams have essentially swapped positionsthe Jets dazzled
in Week 1 before fizzling in Week 2, while the Fins did the opposite by
putting on quite the show against the Oakland Raiders.

Regarding Miami, it was largely believed, even by this writer, that they had one of the worst offenses in the league. They certainly didnt provide evidence of that last week; in fact, if they can continue to perform at the level they did against Oakland, Fin fans might have a little something to look forward to moving forward.

Week 2 marked the first win for rookie head coach Joe Philbin, which came with a well-deserved Gatorade shower, and both Ryan Tannehill and Reggie Bush put on quite the show demonstrating their true talent. The former went 18 of 30 for 200 yards and his first passing touchdown, not to mention a rushing touchdown; while the latter rushed for 172 yards on 26 carries, averaging 6.6 yards per carry, and scored two touchdowns.

Whats more, the Dolphins receiving corps showed they might actually be a respectable force. Brian Hartline had a career day with nine catches for 111 yards, while Davone Bess had hauled in three passes for 43 yards. The tough ground attack and effective passing game saw the Fins go up by 11 points in the third quarter, which forced quarterback Carson Palmer to take to the air 48 times. The Dolphins defense did allow 373 yards through the air, but they did shut down Darren McFadden, who carried 11 times for mere 22 yards. If Philbin and Tannehill continue to mature, especially at the rate where the offense can put up 452 net yards, and the defense does their job, well lets just say they should not be taken lightly.

On the other side of the field are the Jets, who walloped the Bills 48-28 in Week 1. The J-E-T-S looked to be an offensive juggernaut, but those aspirations disappeared in Week 2 when they sputtered against the Steelers in a 10-27 loss. The Jets started off quick in that game, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter, followed by a field goal in the second, but those would be the only points they put on the board.

Mark Sanchez wasnt exactly electric going 10 for 27 for 138 yards and a touchdown, while their leading rusher ended up being Bilal Powell, who carried nine time for 33 yards. Toss in mediocre receiving numbersincluding a nowhere-to-be-found Stephen Hilland the Jets offense and their 219 net yards just fell flat.

The Jets/Dolphins rivalry is among the oldest and most entertaining in the NFL. The two teams always play each other hard, and this weeks matchup will be no different; in fact, it might even be a little more heated as Tony Sparano, who was let go as the Dolphins head coach last year, will return to South Florida as the Jets offensive coordinator and plans on unleashing some wildcatwhich he made famous during his time in Miami. Hell no what to do against his old team to be effective, but expect Philbin and company to throw some new things the Jets way.

Vesper Abadons Pick to Cover the Point Spread: I have to admit, I saw a lot of things I liked about the Phins and their run blocking scheme and maybe, just maybe, they could be on the right track to something special. Granted the same could be said about the Jets from Week 1, but their latest showing leads one to believe their success may have been a fluke.

The Week 3 Jets/Dolphins matchup will be a proving ground for both teams and give one a leg up in the division. Theres no clear favorite here, but I have to give the edge to Miami as they have the momentum and are playing on their home turf. The Jets will put up a good fight as they always do, and I believe the game will be close with the Dolphins winning straight up as a 3 point underdog.
