The New York Giants’ highly anticipated 2023 campaign was brought to a halt last Monday night when QB Aaron Rodgers went down with an apparent ankle injury. Before the season, Rodgers had provided hope to a Jets’ offense that struggled significantly in recent years despite having one of the better defenses in the league. Many believed that Rodgers was the missing piece that Jets needed to make a run at a Super Bowl in similar fashion to Tom Brady when he arrived in Tampa. Instead, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on just the 4th play of the game and will miss the remainder of the season.
Despite the injury, the Jets’ defense rallied to take down the Buffalo Bills in a 22-16 overtime thriller. The Jets defense picked off star QB Josh Allen 3 times and then undrafted rookie Xavier Gibson returned a punt for a touchdown in overtime to give the Jets the walk-off victory. Needless to say, the Jets’ defensive effort was exactly what was needed in the loss of Rodgers and that defense will have to carry the load for the remainder of the season as the team resorts back to QB Zach Wilson. However, the Jets do have one of the very best defenses in the NFL and that means they will likely be competitive throughout the year despite the ceiling being lowered in the wake of Rodgers’ injury. This Sunday the Jets will get a very tough test when they go on the road to face the Dallas Cowboys who are coming off one of the most impressive performances in recent memory.
Could Dallas have the No.1 defense in the NFL?
Before Monday night’s disaster with Aaron Rodger, the Dallas Cowboys delivered an imperative message on Sunday night by blowing out the New York Giants in a 40-0 shutout. The result was fueled by an incredible performance by the Cowboys defense which racked up 7 sacks, forced 3 turnovers, and scored 2 non-offensive touchdowns in the blowout. To be fair, the Cowboys performance was not just a fluke of turnovers by the Giants. It seemed like every play they were getting pressure in the back field, nearly picking the ball off, and/or laying extremely hard hits with every play. It was a truly dominating performance that we rarely see in this age of football and it has many wondering if the Dallas defense is the best in the NFL?
While there are still cases to be made for the defenses of the 49ers and Jets, the Cowboys have an all-star talented roster on the defensive side of the football that has been boosted by the addition of CB Stephon Gilmore who had 3 pass deflections and an interception in the opener. This week the Dallas defense will get another promising match-up against the Jets’ offense that has Zach Wilson back at the helm. Wilson played well in Rodger’s absence last Monday but he has shown a history of performing his worst when under pressure and expect that to be the case this weekend. Perhaps after the Cowboy’s encore performance, we will know just how strong this defense truly will be in 2023.
Jets must focus on the ground game in week 2
One of the biggest positives for this Jets offense continues to surround the play of 2nd year running back Breece Hall. Hall had an explosive rookie campaign and exploded for 127 yards on just 10 carries in last week’s upset win over Buffalo. In the wake of the loss of Aaron Rodgers and on the verge of facing a relentless pass-rush in Dallas, I believe the Jets have to turn to Hall in a big way. Despite the speed and talent of this Dallas defense, they have struggled to stop the run at times which is the reason they drafted DT Mazi Smith in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft. I believe the Jets running attack led by Hall and RB Dalvin Cook against the Cowboys defensive front will determine how this game unfolds.

New York Jets vs. Dallas Cowboys Betting Prediction
The line movement in this game has moved in the Cowboys’ favor in a huge way since the loss of Rodgers, but I believe it may have reacted too much. The Jets are still a very solid football team with one of the best defenses in the NFL. Do I need to remind everyone of how much QB Dak Prescott has struggled over the last two seasons? There are simply too many points on the table to avoid for this match-up.
