The Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs take the trip across the Atlantic for a week 9 showdown in Frankfurt, Germany on Sunday. These 6-2 teams could be facing each other down the line, with this maybe being a sneak-preview of a possible postseason matchup. The defending Super Bowl Champion Chiefs are coming off their second loss of the season, a puzzling 24-9 loss to the Broncos last week. Back on the road this week in a big way, they battle a rising Dolphins team that rebounded on Sunday from their second loss of the season, beating the Patriots, 31-17. Who can notch win number 7 this week in Frankfurt?
How These Teams Match Up
It’s ironic in a way that Tyreek Hill is facing his old team this week, only further bringing into light the role-shift for the Chiefs. They’ve gone from a team with stellar individual pieces to more of a collective approach on offense, while also featuring a defense with more fangs. Now it’s a Miami team flashing the big guns on offense, with Tua Tagovailoa showing an expert hand at commandeering this offense, a version of Hill who has somehow gotten even more prolific and nice pieces like Raheem Mostert and Jaylen Waddle, who has had some bigger games in recent weeks. Mike McDaniel has made this perhaps the most dangerous offense in the conference.
Still, last week was the first time the Chiefs gave up more than 21 points, with the Broncos only eclipsing that by 3 points. It has been a stout defense that can bring a lot of heat in the form of a pass-rush. But having played their fair share of off-key offenses as of late, we’ll see how this somewhat newfound defensive edge translates against a smooth-running offense like what we’ve seen from the ‘Fins this season. But maybe Miami would have just preferred to see the Chiefs beat the Broncos last week, as the Chiefs might have some extra urgency that they otherwise would have lacked if not for the setback last week and not wanting to drop two straight.

Reality Sandwich for Miami
You see the two losses to Buffalo and Philadelphia, two good teams, accompanied by a group of wins against the likes of the Patriots (twice), the 50-point mauling of Denver, along with wins over the Giants and Panthers, it makes you wonder. Have they been made to look a little better than they are so far this season? We know they’re the goods, a team that has been coming around, hopefully having found answers for their injury concerns at quarterback. We also see teams occupying similar stations in life who look one way against the more so-so teams in the league, while appearing to be a diminished force when taking on the real contenders of the league. Maybe Miami has seen it a little easy this season and they’re still a work-in-progress when thrust into this context. And losing last week means it’s not likely a good week to catch the Chiefs sleeping.
Against Chris Jones and all the other talent throughout the Chiefs’ defense, the Dolphins could find things a little more difficult. When the Dolphins do well, the numbers tell the story. Tyreek Hill has his swelled-up stat line, as does Tua, with others boasting of big individual days. Against this Kansas City defense, nary a player has really had a good day against this bunch all season. The closest might have been a 100-yard day for Christian Kirk in week two. It’s a peculiar thing, but just as Miami is going against a different force from what they’ve seen this season, the same can be said for a KC defense that has a little more on their plates this week. But maybe this isn’t the ideal week to expect a Miami statistical bonanza. That doesn’t mean, however, that they can’t cover the spread. It shows how well these teams have done in spots this season that while not always getting great value, they’re a combined 11-5 against the spread.
Take the Points
It’s a tricky matchup in a locale that just seems given to more off-the-grid results to come down. Things happen when teams are out of their element that can be disruptive and throw a squad off-center. I’d expect some offensive success in this spot from the Dolphins, but I still think the more all-around appeal of the Chiefs gives them the more-reliable recipe for success in this spot. Their “D” should curtail a Miami offensive feeding frenzy, while Mahomes and this offense greater tests a Miami defense than what they’ve seen for the bulk of the season. I’m going with Kansas City in this one.
Loot’s Prediction to Cover the Point Spread: I’m betting on the Kansas City Chiefs plus 2 points.
