Sometimes I get the benefit of breaking down some great NFL games then other times I have to take my time to look into a game that I wish would just be cancelled. Well, this is one of those games. The Los Angeles Rams who are 3-5 will head east to MetLife Stadium to take on the 3-6 New York Jets. This will more than likely be an ugly low scoring affair but hey, you never know.
The line has New York as a two point favorite over the Rams while the total points are set at 39.5 combined. As of Tuesday night, over 60% of the action was on the Jets to get the home cover and the over under in the total points was exactly 50/50 on each side of the line. Neither team has been impressive overall this season both against the spread and actual wins and losses. This game could seriously go either way. I say that a lot about NFL games but this one for sure is very tough to tell.
I really thought coming into 2016 that the LA Rams would be improved. I did not think they would make a run for a playoff spot or division title, but I truly thought things were going to get rolling into the right direction over the next couple of seasons. I may have been wrong, really wrong. No one knows what is going on the with number one overall pick, Jared Goff. Is he even going to play this season? Some say yes, some say no. I am not so sure it matters anyway. The Rams are just a mess on offense. They have the 32nd worst scoring offense in the NFLdead last, well tied for dead last. These guys are only scoring 16.3 a game behind an offense with Case Keenum at QB, an overpaid Tavon Austin who is not performing, and the only star of the group, Todd Gurley simply cannot do it all by himself. If the Rams want to get back to winning games, they must find a way to get Gurley going and getting a more balanced attack through the air and on the ground. Until this offense gets going, it is going to be tough to beat anyone.
So I pretty much just trashed the Rams and their inefficiencies but much of the same can be said about the New York Jets too. In 2016, the Jets are 3-6 and are not much better statistically than the Rams. New York ranks 27th in points scored (19.2 per game) and they rank 24th in points allowed (26.1 per game). Not a good combination. The Jets have had some success running the ball but that is about it since the passing game is also in the bottom third of the league. This weekend, if the Jets want to win, they need to score points. Of course that sounds basic, but it is true. They will not need to come out and drop 30 or 40, if New York can get in the mid 20s, it may be just enough to get the job done against a Rams team that just cannot score much.
This game is just going to be ugly, very ugly. The only way I see it getting into a high scoring affair is if the defenses or special teams score throughout because I certainly cannot see either offense getting going. I personally am not going to touch this game. I will not risk one dime on these two teams, no way. I feel like someone will win a 16-13 type game and since the game is in New York, I will just predict the Jets to win it.
Bobs Pick to Cover the Point Spread:Stay away from these two teams. Stay far away. I do feel confident though in saying to take the under 39.5. I see a low scoring game that comes down to the end. TAKE UNDER 39.5
