Los Angeles Chargers Season Total Wins and Super Bowl Pick

by | Last updated Aug 27, 2021 | nfl

The Betanysports.eu season wins total for the Chargers is 9.5. Over is going for -120, with under at -110. They are also offering a +3350 quote for the Bolts to win the Super Bowl. Their second straight sub- .500 season at 7-9 in 2020 was a letdown, eventually leading to the dismissal of head coach Anthony Lynn. In comes highly-touted Rams’ assistant Brandon Staley. He will inherit a good-looking QB in Justin Herbert, who raised some eyebrows in his rookie season. He also inherits a lot of good pieces on both sides of the ball, and he will at least have a real opportunity to whip this franchise into shape.

The Injury Quotient

Whether it’s a franchise-wide curse or just having injury-prone players, but the team goes the way their overall health goes. Season after season, bodies drop. They have two studs on defense in Derwin James and Joey Bosa, who can’t seem to stay on the field. It seems by midseason, they’re forced to put in offensive linemen who started the season working at Home Depot or delivering Amazon packages. The one season where they caught a good break recently in 2018, they were 12-4. And while injury setbacks haven’t been their only issue, it has held them back recently. If they stay healthy, they will be good. But it always looms as a thorn in the side of those who take optimistic preseason stands on the Chargers.

Genuine Cause for Hope

From a strength-of-roster standpoint, there aren’t many teams as loaded as the Chargers. The offense boasts a good young QB whose form could really explode this season. There are no stars for Herbert to work with, perhaps, but just solid guys all around him. The run game, led by Austin Ekeler, is a varied one and can do damage aerially. They have a slew of difference-making receivers, led by Keenan Allen. And improvements were made in key areas. With a healthy Bryan Bulaga, along with the acquisitions of Rashawn Slater and Corey Linsley, they should field a pretty good line, something they didn’t have last season.

What has some Chargers’ fan salivating is the prospects of what Staley could do with a defense that is packed with talent. The addition of Linval Joseph helped solidify their interior line. With a healthy Joey Bosa, the menace could be considerable up-front. The linebacker crew has a chance to be really special, with former first-rounder Kenneth Murray coming on strong last season, with Drue Tranquill and Kyzir White making plays left and right. The secondary got a boost with the drafting of Asante Samuel, Jr. and along with Chris Harris, Jr. and surging Michael Davis at the corner, that could be a team strength. And having a healthy Derwin James at safety could not only bring this secondary together but the entire defense. His staying healthy is key.

The Dangers in Being Too Optimistic

They’ve had a lot of these pieces for years now and still only managed a 12-20 mark over their last two seasons. A surge to ten wins, which would be needed for their season wins total bet to go over, requires an abundance of optimism. Maybe almost too much. You’re hoping all aspects of their team fire, with no catastrophic injuries that could send things sideways. You need their heavy-hitters on defense to avoid injury for a change. And while there were upgrades, particularly through the draft and along the O-line, they lost a few key guys, like Hunter Henry and Melvin Ingram.

A very rosy outlook is being taken on by new head coach Brandon Staley. Things don’t always fire right away with a revamped coaching staff. Joe Lombardi comes in as the new offensive coordinator. Staley, 38, is getting a lot of juice based on one season as the defensive coordinator for the Rams. As recently as 2016, he was the defensive coordinator at John Carroll. That’s a rapid rise, and while that can be seen as a testament to his abilities to coach and connect with people, this is his first head coaching job, and he sure did arrive here quickly.

Does the Schedule Cooperate?

It’s hard not to mention that no matter how easy the opposition might seem, the Chargers have this recent trend of playing down to inferior teams’ levels. The flip side of that coin is they often over-perform in spots that seem way too difficult. At any rate, they’re in a division that appears to be at least slightly above average. And it’s not just the two games against two-time defending conference champions Kansas City. Denver could be better, as could the Raiders.

Their season opener in Washington is no picnic. Then they host Dallas before going into KC, hosting the Raiders and Browns, then playing the Ravens. It’s a tough early stretch that could determine their season trajectory. They play the whole AFC North this season, which isn’t easy. But they also get the whole NFC East, which is a bit of a break. They also host the Patriots, Vikings, and Giants while taking to the road against Philly and Houston. So the wins are out there. But with a tough start to the season, a strong division, and some matchups against unfamiliar opponents, there are ample landmines in their 2021 schedule.

Take the Under and No for the Super Bowl

It’s hard to pin down a team that has this wide of a possible range. There is the distinct possibility that Staley takes over a team with a packed roster, they catch a couple of breaks, and end up making those who went under and didn’t take +3350 for the Super Bowl look foolish. That can happen. I just can’t help but think that the optimism on Staley taking over, and even Herbert to some extent, has run amok to a certain degree. With the Chargers, recent history tells us it’s more a matter of when and not if injuries start to take chunks out of this team. Even with the extra game, I see enough things going wrong to keep the Bolts from hitting double-digit wins this season, with the Super Bowl being just out of range. Maybe next season.
