The bottom two teams from the NFC East will collide in a divisional match-up this Sunday when the Washington Commanders host the New York Giants in a home opener at Northwest Stadium. The Giants suffered a disappointing 28-6 loss in their home opener in Week 1 against the Vikings in what can only be described as a poor performance on both sides of the football. The Giants were simply outclassed by a Vikings team that appeared poised for a setback in 2024 after losing their franchise quarterback, starting running back, and several key pieces on the defensive side of the football.
While expectations were not exactly high for the G-men, the Commanders did have optimism going into the 2024 campaign that was surrounded by a new coaching staff and QB Jayden Daniels, who Washington drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft. Daniels is expected to be the Commanders’ franchise quarterback for the years to come and has a lot of promising potential. However, the Washington offense struggled in the opener in the passing game and most shockingly was the play of the defense which gave up four passing touchdowns to QB Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Needless to say, Washington did not show many signs of immediate improvement through one week of football and will continue to try to turn things around this Sunday!

New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders Betting Analysis
Perhaps I am going to say the quiet part out loud, but QB Daniel Jones just does not live up to the standards of a starting NFL quarterback. With the loss of RB Saquon Barkley to Philadelphia, the Giants selected WR Malik Nabers with the 6th overall pick in the NFL Draft in hopes to finally have a go to receiver in the passing game which is something the franchise has missed since the prime days of Odell Beckham Jr. However, the Giants made no moves to improve the quarterback position which still surrounds the incompetence from Jones who completed just 22 of 42 passes for 186 yards and two picks against an inferior Minnesota defense. Without any improvement from Jones, the Giants offense appears to have gotten even worse from a unit that produced the 4th worst offense in the league last season.
While the Commanders were lit up by the Buccaneers passing attack in week 1, we can rest assured that will not happen this week against the Giants’ pathetic offense. That said, the Commanders defense still has to play better and limit the big plays. Fortunately, I don’t see many match-ups that threaten Washington this week. Despite a slow start, QB Jayden Daniels still made plays with his feet last week and showed the competitive nature to lead this offense. WR Terry McLaurin had a surprisingly quiet debut and I would look for him to be more of a factor this week. If Daniels or RB Brian Robinson can produce some first downs on the ground, I expect things to open up in the passing game. I am still very high on Daniels, and he is my pick for Offensive Rookie of the Year. This is a perfect match-up to get that campaign underway!

New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders Betting Prediction
I know the trends suggest we should fade the Commanders this week based on historical narratives. However, trends do not always account for personnel and coaching changes. I simply see more upside from the Commanders and their path forward this season. I believe this is an excellent opportunity to end their nine game losing streak and I believe they get the job done!
Jay’s Pick: Take Washington -1.5
