This Sunday we have an NFC North battle between two teams that know each other very well. The 5-4 Detroit Lions will travel into Soldier Field to take on the 3-6 Chicago Bears. Dating back to 2013, the Lions have won seven of the last eight contests between these two teams while covering the spread in four of those games. This will be the first of two showdowns between these two teams in 2017.
Seeing as how Chicago has struggled so far this season, the line has the Lions favored by three points on the road over the Bears and the total points are set at 41. 74% of the betting action likes the Lions to cover this game which is quite alarming because there is so much action on their side and the line really is not moving…at least it has not moved yet. For the total points, 56% of the documented action thinks this game will go under the total points.
Detroit is 5-4 and sits in second place in the NFC North behind the Minnesota Vikings who have had a surprising start at 7-2. The Lions cannot afford to lose games they are supposed to win if they plan to catch Minnesota down the stretch. After starting the season at 3-1, the Lions dropped three straight but are no again back on a win streak coming out on top of their last two games. Matthew Stafford has the Lions passing attack rankedin the top tenin the NFL averaging right at 254 yards a game passing. Not only isDetroit one of the better passing teams, they are also ranked top ten in scoring offense putting up 27 a game.Against the Bears though, the Lions will need toestablish a run game. Although to Bears are struggling on offense this season, their defense is still ranked in the upper half of the NFL andcould potentially make things difficult on the Lions ifDetroit looks to be one dimensional.
Chicago is going to have their hands full against Detroit, but these division games can get interesting sometimes because these teams know each other so well. Where Detroit likes to throw the ball and the run game ranks lower…the Bears are polar opposite. Chicago is ranked 31st in the NFL in passing but Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen has the Bears rushing attack averaging over 120 yards a game on the ground. This could actually play into the Bears favor. If the Chicago defense can get some stops and keep Matt Stafford on the sideline, the Bears can grind this game out and keep it low scoring. A shoot out is NOT what Chicago needs this week.
This game is not an easy one to predict in my opinion. The average fan looks at this game and says “ok, Detroit has this in the bag.” I disagree. I have a feeling not only does Chicago keep this game close, I think they finda way to get to Stafford and the Bears come out on top in a 19-17 type game. I would not bet the house on this, but in these type of games with a line like this, I tend to take the points and hope for the best.
