The NFL offers up one of those games only a mother would watch when the Cowboys and Bengals, both playing out the string on lost seasons, meet in Cincinnati Sunday afternoon. But believe it or not, we sometimes find profitable betting leans on games like this. Can Dallas, still harboring faint playoff hopes, come up with a much-needed win? Can the Bengals show some life of any kind? And how are we playing this game with our free NFL pick?
NFL Betting Odds
Week 14 NFL betting odds opened the Cowboys as three-point favorites for this game, with an over/under of right around 44.5. Early betting action then bumped Dallas half a point, to -3.5, and dipped that total two points, to 42.5.
Cowboys Betting Preview
Dallas is trying to play itself out of playoff contention, losing its last two games, including a 34-17 decision at Baltimore Tuesday night. The Cowboys actually led the Ravens 3-0 early and 10-7 in the second quarter, then gave up a 20-0 Baltimore run into the fourth. Dallas had an outside chance to cover the spread as a nine-point dog when it pulled to within 27-17 with four minutes left but immediately allowed the Ravens to drive right down the field for a touchdown, and that was that.
The Cowboys got out-gained by Baltimore, but only by a margin of 401-388. But the Dallas defense allowed the Ravens to rush for 294 yards, big chunks at a time, and the game slipped away.
Also, Cowboys K Greg Zuerlein missed three field goals, although two came from 50-plus.
Two weeks ago, Dallas lost to Washington, badly, 41-16. But just prior to that, the Cowboys upset Minnesota 31-28, and just before that, they took then still-unbeaten Pittsburgh to the limit before falling 24-19.
At 3-9 on the season, Dallas, unbelievably, sits only two games out of first place in the comical NFC East, with four games to play. A win Sunday, along with losses by Washington and the Giants (which could certainly happen), and the Cowboys would only be one game out.

Bengals Betting Preview
Cincinnati, meanwhile, just suffered its fourth straight loss, 19-7 at Miami last week. The Bengals, with back-up quarterback Brandon Allen making his second start in place of the injured Joe Burrow, actually struck first on a 72-yard pass-catch-run touchdown late in the first quarter. But Cincinnati came up totally empty from there, giving up the last 19 points of the game and missing ATS as a 10-point dog.
Near the end, third-string QB Ryan Finley threw an interception from the Miami 18-yard line, when even a field goal would have covered the spread.
The Bengals got out-gained by the Dolphins 406-196 and out-rushed 110-40.
Cincinnati has now been out-gained and out-rushed by significant amounts all three games since Burrow went down.
Two weeks ago, the Bengals produced 155 yards of total offense in a 19-17 loss to the Giants.
At 2-9-1 on the season, Cincinnati is just looking for something to build on next year.
These two teams met most recently four seasons ago. A 28-14 Cowboys home victory. Dak Prescott quarterbacked Dallas that day against Andy Dalton for the Bengals. Now, Dalton is starting for the Cowboys.

Free NFL Pick
Dallas is the better team here, with the better running game (such as it is), the better quarterback, and yes, even the better defense (again, such as it is). Plus, the Cowboys still have some motivation to win. If they could just pick up a couple of victories over the next three weeks and get a little help from elsewhere, their Week 17 match-up with the Giants might mean something. Meanwhile, Cincinnati is basically hopeless without Burrow. We’ll give the points here with Dallas. Hey! Are you still laying -110 odds on your bets?
