The Cincinnati Bengals dropped to 2-3 SU following a 19-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night. Despite a solid defensive effort, QB Joe Burrow could not get anything going down the field against the NFL’s worst pass defense and ended the performance with a modest stat line featuring 24 of 35 passing for 217 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Now the defending AFC Champions are in the unexpected territory, back below the .500 mark and facing another dangerous road test in their Week 6 match-up against the New Orleans Saints inside the Caesars Superdome.
The Saints snapped a 3-game losing streak in a 39-32 shootout victory over the Seahawks. Despite not having QB Jameis Winston or WR Michael Thomas for the 2nd week in a row, the Saints got a boost from QB/TE Taysom Hill, who converted nine carries for 112 yards with three touchdowns and threw for another passing touchdown. In many ways, Hill provided the type of boost the offense has been missing all season, and it will be interesting to see how the Saints’ utility threat will be used again this Sunday. A large part of Hill’s participation likely relies on the availability of QB Jameis Winston who has been battling a back injury. As of now, Winston has yet to log a full practice, meaning we could see another mix of backup QB Andy Dalton and Taysom Hill behind center.
Cincinnati Bengals vs. New Orleans Saints Betting Analysis
From a match-up perspective, this Bengals vs. Saints meeting this weekend has all the ingredients to be an “ugly” contest. The reason I use the word “ugly” is because it describes both teams’ offenses. The Bengals offensive line remains among the worst groups in football, and QB Joe Burrow has been unable to stretch the field vertically. WR Ja’Marr Chase is catching all of his passes at the line of scrimmage or within 10 yards limiting his elusiveness. Meanwhile, WR Tee Higgins is battling an ankle injury. With CB Marshon Lattimore paired against Chase, along with likely some extra help, the Bengals do not have many ways to move the football with the current play of the OL.
The good news for Bengals fans is that despite the offensive struggles, the defense continues to play better than expected. In fact, the Bengals currently ranked 8th in the NFL, allowing just 17.8 points per game. For this week’s match-up against the Saints, I think Cincinnati has all the tools to post another quality performance, especially when you consider the health status of Winston and Thomas, who have been sidelined for weeks, and also consider that emerging WR Chris Olave is currently in the concussion protocol. Within the passing threats, the Bengals could be in an obvious position where they have to focus on stopping the run. While I’m sure the general public will point to the huge rushing numbers that Hill and RB Alvin Kamara produced last week, I would remind everyone that the Saints’ defense is absolute trash. Needless to say, things will be much more challenging against Cincinnati.
