This Sunday in the Music City, the AFC South’s first place Tennessee Titans will play host to the 3-5 Bengals from Cincinnati. Tennessee is a team on the rise while the Bengals have been a mystery and appear to be trending in the wrong direction. This is a big game for both teams while the Bengals are trying to get back on track and Tennessee who is tied with Jacksonville for the division lead needs to keep pace.
The Titans are a 4.5 home favorite over the Cincinnati Bengals and the total points are set at 40.5 combined. As of late Tuesday evening, the early action was on the Titans to get the home cover. 65% liked Tennessee. As for the total points, 57% thinks this game actually stays under which I find interesting, I would have thought most would take the over…oh well.
The Titans may be catching the Bengals at just the right time. This Cincinnati team looks bad and the frustration is showing. Just look at what AJ Green did this past week in their game against Jacksonville. These Bengals are struggling and they are not taking it well. Tennessee on the other hand has played pretty well in 2017. The Titans are 5-3 and tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars a top the AFC South division. Marcus Mariota has not put up huge passing numbers but his athleticism has created problems for defenses and the Titans run game is ranked 10th in all of the NFL. Statistically overall, this Titans team is not as good as their record…they are just finding ways to win. The scoring defense is 23rd in the NFL and the scoring offense is almost in the top ten. The defense is going to need to step up if this team wants to have any shot to not only make the playoffs but to advance once they are there. Along with better defense, at some point, Mariota is going to need to become a legit passing threat. Currently the Titans are not even averaging 200 yards a game in the air and ranks in the bottom 3rd in this area…this has to improve.
Speaking of having to improve, what is up with the Bengals? I did not think these guys were a legit AFC threat, but I for sure thought they would be better than they are. The defense is decent but this Cincy offense is REAL BAD. The Bengals are ranked 32nd in rushing offense, 28th in passing offense, and are only scoring 16 points a game which puts them as the 28th ranked scoring offense in the league. To me, that speaks volumes about the defense. To have an offense this bad that keeps the defense on the field and to still have a near top ten scoring defense, says a lot. If the Bengals can just get the offense rolling, this could be a good team. Cincinnati got lucky with the news that AJ Green will not be suspended after his brawl with Jalen Ramsey of the Jaguars. Green is a weapon that the Bengals cannot lose.
The Bengals have a punchers chance in this game. Tennessee is good but they are not world beaters. I think this is actually a competitive low scoring contest that comes down to the very end. I could see either team winning and for that, I will roll with the underdog and take the 4.5 points the Bengals are getting.
