The New York Giants will return from a Week 9 bye this Sunday to host the Houston Texans at MetLife Stadium. Through the opening half of the season, the Giants have been one of the bigger surprise stories in the NFL. At 6-2 SU and 6-2 ATS, the Giants are tied with the Cowboys and Titans for the best record in the league against the spread. Perhaps more surprisingly, the Giants remain in the hunt in the NFC East and will have a great opportunity to etch another “W” in the win column when they meet the Houston Texans as 5-point betting favorites this Sunday.

For the visiting Texans, the first half of the season has not exactly been overly promising. Since the opening game tie with the Colts, the Texans have lost six of the last seven games, with the lone exception being a 13-6 win over the Jaguars in week 5. Most recently, the Texans suffered a 29-17 loss to the Eagles last Thursday in front of a primetime audience. The Texans’ defense did not have any answers for QB Jalen Hurts, and the offense continued to struggle with QB Davis Mills, who has been held to a mere 150 passing yards in consecutive games. Needless to say, Houston has been solidified as one of the bottom feeders in the NFL and will look for an opportunity to surprise fans and bettors this weekend.

Houston Texans vs. New York Giants Betting Analysis

While Houston definitely does not pass the “eye” test, every week, the NFL seemingly produces a big upset, just like we saw last week with the Jets over the Bills. For the Texans to make the upset happen this week, I think they must continue to put the ball into the hands of RB Dameon Pierce at a high rate. Pierce remains the biggest bright spot for the Houston organization and has racked up 678 yards with three touchdowns already in his rookie campaign. We know the Texans are not going to post big passing numbers with Mills and a depleted receiving corps. Therefore Pierce has to carry the load and potentially be more involved in the receiving game as well. Either way, the Giants have not been good against the run giving up nearly 140 yards per game, and that further proves that Pierce gives the Texans the best opportunity to win on Sunday.

For the Giants, I believe their path to success is even easier on the ground. RB Saquan Barkley has looked tremendous this season with 779 yards and five touchdowns. Barkley has always been one of the NFL’s best backs but has been slowed by injuries in recent years. Now looking like his old self, Barkley gets his best match-up of the season against a Houston defense that has been torched by enemy running backs to the tune of 180 yards per game. There is a good chance that QB Daniel Jones does not need to do much this week, and perhaps that is a good thing considering how bad the Giants’ passing attack has looked this year. Either way, I give the edge here to the Giants, who clearly has the better offense to create more scoring opportunities. The only reason I am hesitant to pull the trigger on the G-men by laying the points is because the Giants are among the worst teams in the league in red zone efficiency and often settle for too many field goals.

  • The Texans have hit the “over” in four of the last six games
  • The Giants are 4-1 ATS in the last five games

Houston Texans vs. New York Giants Betting Prediction

While I think this is a great match-up for Giants RB Saquan Barkley against the NFL’s worst defense, I’m not confident either offense will cash in on their scoring opportunities. In fact, I think there is considerable value on the under despite the relatively low total (40.5).

Jay’s Pick: Take the under 40.5
