Run It Back

Oakland will certainly be hoping that’s what happens here, as the Athletics teed off on Snell the last time they saw him. This pitching matchup is actually a repeat of six days ago in San Diego, which saw the Athletics jump all over Snell, scoring seven runs in four innings on their way to a 10-4 rout of the Padres.

The teams only played a two-game set in San Diego, so there’s little to glean from those matchups, but both featured scoring early and often. The first-five totals had no chance of avoiding the over, as both games saw more than seven runs scored in the first five innings of the contest. That’s actually not common for either team, as the Padres and Athletics both rank in the bottom third in terms of first-five overs and unders, but with another low total on the docket, fading it appears to be a bad idea.

Regretful Move

That’s especially true given the inconsistency of Snell, who has really struggled to get comfortable in San Diego. For whatever reason, Snell just has not pitched well this season and has really struggled away from home, as his road ERA is a staggering 8.02 in 42 innings pitched. At home, he’s the same solid pitcher that he was in Tampa Bay, but whenever he wears the Padres uniform outside of San Diego, he’s been lit up pretty well. Things were so bad for Snell when Oakland came to town that the Athletics were able to dominate the game despite Snell pitching in a stadium where he’s comfortable.

Over his past 14 innings of work, Snell has given up 12 runs, and only once has he seen his strikeouts creep above five. That happened when he fanned eight hitters against Miami and emerged with a 3-1 Padres victory. Otherwise, Snell isn’t making many batters miss right now, and when batters aren’t missing against him, he’s not getting the kind of inferior contact he needs to control the game.

Strikeout Artist

Right now, Snell would love to have the kind of strikeout success that Sean Manaea is having, as the Athletics’ lefty is staying far above the hitters in 2021. Manaea has 29 strikeouts in his past three appearances and has struck out at least six hitters in each of his past seven trips to the hill.

What’s really made his strikeout totals impressive is that he’s landing these kinds of numbers without sacrificing his accuracy. Manaea has 137 strikeouts on the season while walking a mere 29 hitters, and he’s given up just five walks in his past five trips to the mound. Against the Padres, his mastery was on full display, despite the fact that San Diego doesn’t really strike out all that often. The Padres are only 19th in strikeouts, yet Manaea fanned nine hitters and held them to just one hit in six innings.

Weather Report

It’ll be a cool night on the East Bay, with temperatures at 64 degrees and winds blowing nine miles per hour toward right-center.

Dan’s Pick

San Diego hasn’t quite been the same team since losing Fernando Tatis Jr. to injury, and Oakland has shown that it can get to Blake Snell. Given that the Padres couldn’t even touch Manaea in their most recent meeting, the recent history between the teams is far too difficult to ignore. Even with San Diego playing well in interleague contests, Oakland has looked like the better team in recent weeks and is playing at home, which should give them an edge here.

I’ll take the Athletics to again get to Snell and take control of this contest. Where are you betting on games? Does your bookie offer you the ability to wager at reduced odds EVERY DAY?
