Ueck DL’d: Brewers announcer and long-time comedic personality Bob Uecker will miss the next three months as he’s having an aortic valve replaced. We wouldn’t normally report such an event, however, Ueck has been an icon in MLB dating back to the days when many of us were still crapping our pants. Get well soon Ueck. – 4/27

Thursday MLB Notes: The NYY have named P Phil Hughes the team’s 5th starter.

How Weather Affects Betting on MLB Totals – Badger examines key factors to take into account when wagering on MLB totals.

Using the Right Statistics to Handicap Baseball Games – Badger talks about using ERA, WHIP, hitting stats, ballparks and umpire stats to help you handicap MLB games.

Strasburg Dominant: Washington National P Stephen Strasburg looked dominant in his second start of the preseason by shutting down the STL Cardinals on Sunday. The rookie phenom only allowed 2 hits in 3 innings while fanning 2 hitters. This now makes 5 scoreless innings for Strasburg. – 3/15

Twins Ink OF: The Minnesota Twins have extended the contract of speedy OF Denard Span for another five yeats. – 3/13

Fantasy Baseball Tip: You might want to consider claiming/drafting Braves phenom Jason Heyward. He hit a 450 foot bomb in a preseason game a couple days ago. He is a can’t miss prospect and a name you should quickly get familiar with. – 3/10

Retirement Announcement: Boston signed Nomar Garciaparra
to a one day contract in order for him to retire as a Red Sox player. –
3/10

Closer Sidelined: Twins CL Joe Nathan has a torn ligament and is likely headed to the operating room for Tommy John surgery.

Frank Thomas Retirement: What are the goofballs in the media thinking when they say that he might not make the Hall of Fame because he spent most of his career as a DH? They obviously weren’t the ones serving up the pitches that got turned around to the tune of 521 round trippers. – 2/12

Giants Ink Ace for 2 Years: The SF Giants and Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum has agreed to a 2-year 23 million dollar contract. – 2/12

Two Good Teams Looking to Get Better: Rumors are swirling in Minnesota that the Twins are close to signing 2B Orlando Hudson. In Seattle, the Mariner’s are said to be showing interest in re-signing Erik Bedard which would be a huge move if he can stay healthy. Can you imagine facing Felix Hernandez, Cliff Lee and Erik Bedard in a 3 game series. YIKES!

Twinkie for Life? The Minnesota Twins signed C Joe Mauer to a TEN year contract extension which should keep him in Minnesota for his whole career. Terms have not been announced yet. This is a BOLD move considering the economy and the fact that he plays catcher. – 2/1

Free Agent Signings: P Ben Sheets has signed a one year deal with the Oakland A’s. The Oakland Coliseum has a huge field with a ton of foul territory. Sheets should have an oustanding era in the 2’s. That is until the 2nd or 3rd game when he goes down with a season ending injury. The Chicago Cubs signed OF Xavier Nady to a one year deal. He is expected to be their fourth OF. Lookout RHP’s! The Twins have signed Jim Thome to a one year deal. Talk about murderer’s row… Mauer, Morneau, Thome, and Kubel, There should be a fair amount of round trippers again at the baggy this year. – 1/26

Trade: The Angels have traded OF Gary Matthews Jr. to the Mets in exchange for P Brian Stokes. Matthews hit a whopping .248 since “getting paid”.

Free Agent Signing: The Kansas City Royals signed OF Rick Ankiel to a one year deal. – 1/22

Contract Extension: The Seattle Mariners signed Felix Hernandez to a huge 5 year deal making him a Mariner through 2014. A smart move by a team that appears to be dead serious about winning.

MLB Notes: The Detroit Tigers have signed closer Jose Valverde. Marlins Ace Josh Johnson won’t be going anywhere soon as he’s signed a 4 year extension with the team. The Seattle Mariners are thinking ahead and trying to sign Felix Hernandez to a long term deal of 5 or 6 years. The LA Dodgers have signed Matt Kemp for another two years and are also looking at often injured Ben Sheets.

You Gotta Respect That: Retired slugger Mark McGwire came clean and announced publicly that he took steroids on and off for nearly a decade. Maybe this will pave the way for more to come out and clear their consciences. Love him or hate him, you have to respect the fact that he came clean. – 1/11

Vlad Update: It’s pretty probably that OF/DH Vladimir Guerrero is going to sign with the Texas Rangers. The slugger has a career .394 batting average in Texas and always tears the cover off the ball when he plays there. Smart move by the Rangers. Their first in a long time!

Thanks for the Memories: Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson has retired from the game. Johnson leaves baseball as a 300 game winner (303) and 2nd all time in strikeouts to the great Nolan Ryan.
