Predictem MLB Archives: July Through August 2009

The Los Angeles Angels have acquired P Scott Kazmir from the TB Rays for 3 prospects. – 8/30

Saturday: We’re on the Detroit Tigers at +125. – 8/29

Friday: We like the Colorado Rockies today at +113! – 8/28

Ouch: Washington Nationals OF Nyjer
Morgan
broke his hand and will miss the rest of the 2009 season. Kinda
sad as this guy was really coming into his own with the Nats hitting .351
since the trade with a very high OBA as well. – 8/28

Thursday: We like the Mariners at -155 to beat KC. – 8/27

Wednesday: We like the Rangers tonight at +175. – 8/26

Brewers Still Cleaning House: The Milwaukee Brewers have put CL Trevor Hoffman, OF Mike Cameron, INF Craig Counsell, C Jason Kendall, S Braden Looper and 2B Felipe Lopez on waivers. – 8/26

Tuesday: It’s a dog day at Predictem! We like 2 plays today… First we’re on the Pirates at +158. Next we like the Bluejays at +124. Decent potential for both to cash and hoping for a split at worst which would lock in a bit of profit! – 8/25

Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Colorado Rockies Preview and Pick – 8/25

Changing Uni’s: 1B/DH Jason Giambi has signed a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies. He’s supposedly going to come up after September 1st to help the Rocks make a playoff run. – 8/24

Sunday Added Play: We’re taking the Padres to score more than 3.5 runs.

Sunday: We like the OVER 9 runs in the Cards/Padres game at 4PM EST. – 8/23

Saturday: We like the Pirates at =142 today! – 8/22

Friday: We like the OVER 9.5 runs in the Brewers/Nationals game. – 8/21

Thursday Pick: We like the Giants today at -141. – 8/20

Thursday MLB Notes: The St. Louis Cardinals have signed 42 year old P John Smoltz. – 8/20

Wednesday: We’re passing today. We can’t find any VALUE anywhere. Sure, we could lay -300 on the Tigers but it’s not worth the risk. See ya’ll tomorrow. – 8/19

The Washington Nationals have signed the number one pick in the draft, Stephen Strasburg. Baseball America is reporting that it’s a $15.67 million contract. More dtails to come soon. In other news, there’s rumors out of St. Louis that John Smoltz may be signing with the team. – 8/18

Tuesday: We like the Pirates at -102 today. Brewer starter Parra is HORRIBLE on the road as evidenced by his 7.18 ERA 1.89 WHIP and opposing hitters are waxing him to the tune of a .319 average (on the road). – 8/18

Monday: We like the Braves at -168 today. Scherzer hasn’t pitched that well lately. Braves are 7-3 in their last 10 games and Hanson is the real deal. Hate to be so chalky, but this looks like a low risk wager. – 8/17

Sunday: We like the Arizona Diamondbacks at +147 today! – 8/16

Tic-Tock The Washington Nationals have reportedly offering star college pitcher Stephen Strasburg a “record breaking offer”. We have not gotten word yet if Strasburg is going to accept it. He was originally looking for a 35+ million dollar signing bonus! Yikes. – 8/16

Saturday: We like the Baltimore Orioles today at +141! – 8/15

Injury:

Seattle Ace Erik Bedard is OUT indefinitely with a torn labrum and inflamed bursa. He looked good when he was on the mound, but injuries limited him to only 83 innings this season. – 8/15

Friday: We like the Tigers at -118 today! – 8/14

That’s Nuts! Mariners 3B Adrian Beltre was put on the 15 day DL with an INJURED TESTICLE. While attempting to field the BALL, it bounced up and hit him in the sack. It caused internal bleeding. If surgery is necessary, he may miss up to a month. OUCH! – 8/14

Thursday: No value on today’s board. Tons of big favs. Passing! (We do have an NFL preseason pick though: Raiders -2) – 8/13

Wednesday: We like the Cubs tonight. Pedro is back but he isn’t the same Pedro we all used to know and love. Look for the Cubs to put up some runs tonight. – 8/12

Tuesday: We like the Padres today at +126! – 8/11

Monday: We’re on the Baltimore Orioles at -163! – 8/10

Sunday: We’re on the Baltimore Orioles at +250! – 8/9

Tuesday: Finally off the schnide! Today we like the Twins at -143! – 8/4

Monday: We have really been sucking lately. Tread with caution. We’re on the Padres at -105 tonight. Good luck! – 8/3

Sunday: We like the Minnesota Twins today at -110! – 8/2

Saturday: We’re on the UNDER 8.5 runs in the Bluejays/A’s game! – 8/1

It’s Official: Jake Peavy has been traded to the CWS for Clayton Richard and 3 minor league pitchers.

Unconfirmed Trade Rumors: Rumors are swirling that Jake Peavy has been sent to the CWS for minor leaguers. Another unconfirmed rumor is is that the Angels may have made a trade for Roy Halladay. Stay tuned, we’ll report the real scoop shortly!

MLB Trades: LHP Jarrod Washburn has been traded to the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor league players P Luke French and P Mauricio Robles. Neither are said to be “star quality” prospects. The Oakland A’s have sent SS Orlando Cabrera to the Twins for Single-A SS Tyler Ladendorf. Cleveland has shipped C Victor Martinez to Boston for J. Masterson and 2 other players. The Jays have sent 3B Scott Rolen to the Reds, we’re not sure for what yet though. The Red Sox have sent 1B Adam LaRoche to the Braves for 1B Kotchman. The Marlins acquired 1B Nick Johnson from the Nationals for a minor league pitcher. – 7/31

Friday: We like the Pittsburgh Pirates today at +107! – 7/31

MLB Trade Deadline: Rumors are a’swirlin’! Apparently all talks between the Rangers and Bluejays involving a deal that would send Roy Halladay to Texas are dead. Nobody is willing to succumb to the BlueJays hefty asking price for “Doc”. The Twins are in hot pursuit of SS Orlando Cabrera, the Marlins are trying to acquire Nationals 1B Nick Johnson, the Tigers would like to get their mitts on Seattle Jarrod Washburn but don’t seem to have enough trade bait and the biggest new rumor is that the Red Sox are trying to acquire Padres HEAVY HITTING 1B Adrian Gonzalez and/or Indians C Victor Martinez. – 7/31

Trade: The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired closer George Sherrill from the Baltimore Orioles. Sherrill will take over the setup role and J. Broxton will continue to close. – 7/30

Thursday: We’re on the Cincinnati Reds at -157. – 7/30

Wednesday: We’re on the Toronto Bluejays at -176! Chalky, but solid! – 7/29

Ailing Arms: Astros SP Roy Oswalt is likely to land on the DL after straining his lower back. He was removed in the 2nd inning of Tuesday’s game. Chien-Ming Wang will have season ending shoulder surgery. Giants LHP Randy Johnson has been diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff and this may be the last we’ve seen of him on the field. Johnson, who is 46, is only under contract for this season and one would think with such an injury that he’d be inclined to call it quits. He’s a hell of a competitor though, so the only person that really knows that is the big unit. – 7/29

Tuesday: We’re on the Toronto Bluejays today at -110. Good luck! – 7/28

News: The SF Giants have landed heavy hitting 1B Ryan Garko in a trade with the Indians. SF sent LHP Scott Barnes who was 12-3 in A-Ball to Cleveland to complete the deal. – 7/28

Monday: Looking to break a three game skid today. We’re on the Reds at -171. Good luck! – 7/27

Dodgers Taking Page out of Yankees Book: The L.A. Dodgers are apparently serious about winning a World Series title THIS season. It’s rumored that they’re trying to acquire heavy hitting C-1B Victor Martinez and stud LHP Cliff Lee from the Cleveland Indians. Players rumored to be involved are a mixture of promising young arms Kershaw and/or Billingsley and 1B James Loney would likely be part of the deal as well. In other MLB news, Roy Halladay is likely to stay in Toronto as the team is asking the world for him. – 7/27

Sunday: Take the Seattle Mariners at +128! – 7/26

Saturday: We’re on the Texas Rangers at -105! – 7/25

Slugger Lands in STL: The Cardinals bolstered up their lineup for a playoff run by acquiring heavy hitting Matt Holliday in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, pitcher Clay Mortensen and outfielder Shane Peterson.

Friday: Take the Philadelphia Phillies at -132! – 7/24

Thursday: Passing! – 7/23

Wednesday: Passing! – 7/22

Tuesday: Take the San Diego Padres at -110! – 7/21

Monday: We’re on the Atlanta Braves at -171. Laying such wood isn’t a very good long term approach to baseball betting, but J. Sanchez’s numbers on the road are absolutely horrible. His no hitter happened at home and we expect a complete collapse from him tonight despite his previous no hitter effort. – 7/20

Saturday: We’re on the KC Royals at -125! – 7/18

All Star Week: Sorry, no picks for All Star game. Despite one league dominating the series, when you get a bunch of “good” baseball players together for a game, anything can happen! Back late this week with more regular season picks! Enjoy the break fellas!

Pedro Watch: RHP Pedro Martinez is headed to Philly for a physical. If he passes, he is said to be signing with the Phillies immediately. – 7/13

Sunday Pick: San Diego Padres at +117. – 7/12

Injured Star: Reds OF Jay Bruce went down today with a fractured wrist he sustained while trying to make a sliding catch in right field. The “initial take” is that he will likely miss 4-6 weeks with the injury. – 7/12

Saturday: Not much opportunity on the board today. We’re going to take the Pirates at +240 and Kansas City at +157 and hope for a split or better. – 7/11
