The Pittsburgh Pirates have fallen off a cliff, losing ten games in a row, and have been swept in three straight series. Their hitting numbers are as paltry as you’ll ever see over a seven-day stretch, with a .144 batting average, .239 on base percentage, and .242 slugging percentage. PIrate hitters are striking out almost nine times a game over this span. All these numbers add up to the worst in the league over the past week.

The Pirates will feature 24-year-old righty Luis Ortiz, who has pitched poorly in six of his eight appearances this season. His season whip is 1.73, which means he’s almost allowing two baserunners per inning. It’s tough to win when you’re pitching from behind. Most of this is due to his lack of command and inability to miss bats. He walks a ton of hitters and doesn’t strike many out. Men on base and not missing bats produce runs scored.

The Miami Marlins are 6-2 over their last eight games and are in a comfort zone after being able to sleep in their own beds for the last five nights. Second baseman Luis Arraez is off the rails right now, hitting .577 over the past seven days. This has propelled the Fish to own the best batting average in the league over the past week at .305.

The Marlins will feature left-hander Jesus Luzardo, who hasn’t pitched great lately, but considering the opponent’s stagnant offense and the Marlins’ hot hitting, I’m not overly concerned. Luzardo has a respectable 3.04 ERA at home this season and he pitches much better in night games for whatever reason. It’s comforting to know that the Pirates will be missing all-star outfielder Brian Reynolds, and if the coaching staff decides to play mega-power bat Jack Suwinski, he’s on an 0-18 skid and doesn’t hit left-handed pitching at all. Plus, Luzardo is tough on left-handed bats. Lay the big number on Miami.
