A hot Mariners outfit shoots to extend an eight-game winning streak when they take on the division-rival Angels Wednesday afternoon at Safeco (4:10 ET). Which way are we playing this contest with our daily free MLB picks?

The MLB Betting Line

Wednesday’s MLB betting odds opened Seattle and Mike Leake at around -105 over Los Angeles and Garrett Richards, with an over/under of 8.5 runs. In the early betting action, the line was bet up about a nickel, to the -110 range.

The Mariners could also be bet getting +180 giving the run and a half on the run line.

Set-Up

Seattle took the opener of this three-game series Tuesday night 4-1, winning as -110 favorites on the MLB betting line and covering against the run line at a price of +170. The Mariners scored three times in the first inning Tuesday, and that was all starter Wade LeBlanc, and two relievers needed.

So Seattle has won two series in a row and eight games in a row. At 55-31 the Mariners sit just a half-game back of division-leading Houston in the AL West, and they own an eight-game lead over Oakland in the battle for the second American League wild-card spot.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, is 2-8 over its last 10 games. At 43-43 overall the Angels trail the Astros by 12.5 games in the division race and sit 12 games back of Seattle for that second AL wild-card slot.

The Mariners now lead this season series five games to two.

Whirling Wednesday

Leake (8-4, 4.01), by our strict standards, is 8/16 on quality starts this season and seven for his last eight. Last Thursday he held Baltimore to two runs through seven innings, and just before that he threw eight innings of three-hit, scoreless ball against Boston at Fenway, as the Mariners won as +160 underdogs. On the season Seattle is 13-4 with Leake, 9-1 over his last 10 starts, while the overs are 11-6, although only 3-5 over his previous eight outings.

In two starts this year against Los Angeles Leake allowed four runs and 11 hits through 11 1/3 innings. Seattle split those two games.

Richards (4-4, 3.42), fresh off a stint on the DL with a bad hamstring, is just 4/14 on quality starts this year. A month ago he fashioned a great outing, throwing seven innings of one-hit, shutout ball against Texas. Then he held Minnesota to two runs through 5 1/3. But next time out he only lasted two innings against these Mariners, gave up a couple runs and went on the DL. On the season the Angels are 7-7 with Richards but only 1-5 over his last six starts. And the totals are split 7-7.

In two starts this year against Seattle Richards gave up those two runs over 8 2/3 total innings. LA split those two games.

Wednesday’s Batting Splits

The Angels rank 11th in the Majors this year against right-handed pitching with a .249 team batting average, 12th with a .320 team OBP and 8th with a .422 team slugging percentage.

The Mariners rank 4th against RHP with a .258 BA, 17th with a .317 OBP and 10th with a .419 slugging percentage.

We’re gonna call Wednesday’s batting splits a wash.

The Bullpens

The Los Angeles bullpen ranks 16th in the ML with a 3.99 ERA and 20th with a 1.37 WHIP, with a 20/35 save conversion rate.

The Seattle pen ranks 13th in ERA at 3.83 and 9th in WHIP at 1.22 while going 34/49 on save chances.

We gotta give the Mariners the check-mark in the bullpen comparison.

Totals Report

The unders are 22-19 in games played at Safeco Field this season, which are averaging just 7.7 total runs per, fourth-fewest among all ML ballparks.

The overs are 4-2-1 in this season series, as Angels-Mariners games are averaging 9.7 runs per.

Seattle is 8-2 on the unders over its last 10 games, mainly because it’s been getting some pretty good pitching as of late.

LA is 7-2-2 on the unders over its last 11 games, mainly because the sticks have been cold.
