Gotham Stakes Analysis

Trying to find a horse that can win the 2016 Kentucky Derby in this year’s
Gotham Stakes might be a bit of a challenge, but it looks like a race that
could offer great betting value. Three of the seven entrants have angles
that could allow them to outrun their odds.

Rally Cry was steadied under jockey Javier Castellano while trying to move
up the rail on the turn in his last start at Gulfstream Park on January
29. That forced him to drop back, but he re-rallied to finish third behind
fellow Gotham entrant Shagaf, who had a perfect trip pressing the pace from
the outside. Rally Cry gets a rider switch to Junior Alvarado for the Gotham.

Laoban was rated wide on January 9 in the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita and
rallied before tiring to finish third beaten only 2 3/4-lengths. That race
not only looked like a planned educational outing, it also showed he wasn’t
quite ready for that level of competition. Laoban has much more speed than
he showed in his last outing and could be tough on the front end in the
Gotham if jockey Aaron Gryder sends aggressively from the rail post.

Adventist is the wise guy horse. Off slowly in his last, the Withers Stakes-G3
at Aqueduct on January 30, he pressed outside a slow pace and couldn’t gain
in the stretch, but he did show some good fight battling down the stretch
to take third from heavy favorite Flexibility, and he was only 1 3/4-lengths
back of winner Sunny Ridge, who could go favored in this year’s Gotham.
Adventist retains the services of Kendrick Carmouche in the irons, currently
third in the standings at Aqueduct, as he makes just his third lifetime
start. If he can get a decent trip behind anything but a slow pace, he could
make a big move forward at a nice price.

The race sets up with Withers winner Sunny Ridge forcing the pace outside
Laoban if that one decides to send, otherwise either Sunny Ridge or Shagaf
could be the pacesetter under pressure from one and another.

The perfect scenario for our wagers is Laoban on the lead under pressure
from Shagaf and Sunny Ridge. There’s a chance that Laoban could turn both
his rivals back, but Sunny Ridge is a proven fighter so we’ll give him the
edge to get by Laoban this time, while Shagaf has some talent, but he’ll
need to step ahead of his training to defeat this bunch.

If the top three do indeed set a pressured pace, the race will set up for
Adventist and Rally Cry, both of whom should be decent odds. We’re not sure
which way Conquest Big E will go after his fourth place finish behind Moyhaymen
in the Holy Bull Stakes-G2 on January 30 at Gulfstream Park. He makes his
second start back off the layoff for trainer Mark Casse and could also be
considered a longshot rallier if he improves. We have no opinion on Vincento,
who finished a dull fourth over a less than fast track after some minor
trouble early in his stakes debut, the Gander at Aqueduct on February 6.

We’ll take Adventist to win and place, and wheel him on top of Rally Cry,
Laoban and Sunny Ridge in the exactas. We’ll also take him on the bottom
with those three horses for half the amount. And because there are only
seven horses in this year’s Gotham with the scratch of Mo Power, along with
a good possibility of a longshot finishing in the money, we’ll also wheel
Adventist first and second in the trifecta.

Twenty-cent superfecta players might also want to take a shot that Laoban,
Adventist and Rally Cry all finish in the first four and wheel that trio
to the board in all four spots. An inexpensive wager with the potential
of a decent return.

Good luck!
