Wyndham Championship 2024 Picks: Final PGA Tour Regular Season Showdown
PGA Tour – Wyndham Championship Picks
Where: Sedgefield Country Club (Greensboro, NC)
Event: Wyndham Championship
Watch: The Golf Channel, Peacock
When: August 8-11
The final tournament of the 2024 PGA Tour regular season gets underway this weekend at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, with a lot of meaningful golf left to play. While the field may be missing some upper-echelon names, the changes to the PGA Tour playoff qualifications have led to a much-improved field of golfers over the past few seasons. In fact, more than 50% of golfers currently ranked in the top 70 will be teeing it up at Sedgefield. For those on the outside looking in or those whose position in the FedEx Cup standings is not quite comfortable, this is the last chance to move up the leaderboard and have a chance to play in Memphis on August 15th , as only the top 70 ranked golfers will qualify for the playoffs. There should be no shortage of motivation in this tournament, significantly influenced by the $100 million dollar playoff bonus pool, and I expect a highly competitive 72 holes.
Sedgefield Country Club is a par 70 course, playing just over 7100 yards. The course favors golfers with strong iron play and exceptional putting finesse. Designed by Donald Ross, the small, undulating Bermuda grass greens will place enormous emphasis on approach accuracy. In typical Ross design, most greens feature edges sloped towards hazards that will frustrate those whose irons and wedges are not dialed in. Off the tee box, accuracy over distance is preferred. The heavily tree-lined landscape will create unnecessary obstacles for poorly placed drives. Weather also looks poised to be a big factor across all four rounds. As Hurricane Debby works her way up the east coast, golfers will be battling potential heavy rain and windy conditions. If there is any consolation to the ensuing storm, it is that with rain comes softer greens, allowing golfers to attack the pin more aggressively than they normally would.
As I said, I am anticipating a highly energized field throughout the weekend and a competitive finish on Sunday. Accounting for course-specific playstyle, playoff motivation, and mother nature, I have keyed in on my picks for the Wyndham Championship. After nearly going 3 for three last week, if not for the Jon Rahm final-round collapse, I am looking to continue the momentum as the PGA Tour regular season wraps up.
Victor Perez – Top 20 Finish +280
Victor Perez is quite literally right on the playoff cutline, sitting in the 71st spot. The Wyndham Championship presents an opportunity to continue his PGA tour season after narrowly missing a medal at the Olympic games. It will be interesting to see if fatigue is a factor for the Frenchman. Perez has shown that he is capable of playing great golf when the pressure is on. He will need to clean some things up around the green to save strokes, but ultimately, he goes as his putter goes. I predict that Perez will carry his momentum with him from Paris, crack the top 20 at Sedgefield, and live to play another week on tour.
Si Woo Kim – Top 10 Finish +240
Kim currently finds himself securely in the PGA tour playoffs as he sits 36th in the FedEx Cup standings. His trip to Sedgefield will not be one focused on playoff qualification but rather on continuing to climb the rankings, as subsequent playoff tournaments will see the field cut from the top 70 to 50 to 30. Kim is vying to crack the top 30 with a strong performance this weekend, and his skillset aligns with what the course will demand. Kim won at Sedgefield in 2016 and has finished top 5 or better on three separate occasions. While his putting is a glaring hole in his game, his well-above-average approach play has allowed him to rank in the top 40 on tour in total putts per round. Additionally, his 8th-ranked driving accuracy will keep him in advantageous positions to attack the pin on the soft, wet greens. Look for Kim to come out fast on Thursday and Friday.
Sungjae Im – Finishing Position (21 or Better) -115
This pick feels like a no-brainer. Im is currently the betting favorite to win the Wyndham Championship, though his odds to do so currently sit at +1200. He has played exceptionally well as of late with five top 10 finishes in his last seven events. Im’s well-rounded game is apparent as he nets positive strokes gained in all five facets. Sungjae has competed well at this course in his previous five appearances, never finishing outside of the top 25. Remarkably, in all but one round he has played at Sedgefield, Im has finished with a score in the 60s. Lock this play in and forget about it.
