The RBC heritage Tournament Analysis & Picks
Event: The RBC Heritage
Where: Harbour Town Golf Links
Watch: Golf Channel, CBS
When: April 13-16
The week after the excitement of the first Major of the season at Augusta, the PGA Tour heads down the road to Hilton Head Island for another big event, the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town. A field of 143, including 15 of the World Golf Rankings top 20 players, will tee it up for pieces of a $20 million purse and, to the winner, one of those classy Heritage Plaid jackets.
Last week Jon Rahm shot 69 on Sunday, while third-round leader Brooks Koepka shot 75 to win the Masters at Augusta National. In winning his second career Ma-jor title Rahm also provided his financial backers with a payoff of +1000 on Bovada’s Masters “win” board.
Koepka and 52-year-old Phil Mickelson tied for second last week, four shots behind Rahm. Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed, and Russell Henry tied for fourth; Cam Young and Viktor Hovland tied for seventh; Sahith Theegala finished ninth; and defending Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikowa tied for tenth.
Most of those guys are playing this event this weekend
We swung and missed, again, with our top picks for last week’s Masters. Tony Finau (25/1 to win) shot a first-round 69 but finished T-26; Corey Conners (40/1 to win), coming off a victory at the Texas Open the week previous, shot a second-round 79 and missed the cut; and Will Zalatoris (+550 to finish in the top five) withdrew from the tournament Thursday morning due to injury.
As for this week Harbor Town, host to this event since its inception in 1969, plays to a par-71 at around 7,200 yards. This course does not require long off the tee; rather, good placement in the tree-lined fairways is the key.
Last year Spieth made par out of the bunker on the first hole of a playoff with Pat-rick Cantlay to win the Heritage. Those two played 13-under par, followed closely by the seven-some of Cam Davis, JT Poston, Cam Young, Sepp Straka, Matt Ku-char, Shane Lowry, and Harold Varner, who all finished one shot out of the playoff at -12. And Tommy Fleetwood and Erik van Rooyen tied for tenth at -11.
Each week we take a look at the online betting sites and highlight what we believe to be some of the best golf betting values around, with a few free picks to click. Odds to win and pairings for this week can be found at Bovada. Here’s our take on some of the field in this week’s Heritage tournament.
Rahm and Scheffler are lined as the co-favorites on Bovada’s RBC Heritage “win” board at +800. Cantlay is the third choice at +1200, and Collin Morikawa is the fourth choice at +1800. Everybody else is getting at least +2000.
RBC Heritage Bets
Justin Thomas (+2200 to win)
Thomas is ranked No. 12 in the World and recorded three top-10 finishes over his previous eight tournaments, heading into last week. Then he shot 70 on Thursday at Augusta, only to shoot 78 in tough conditions on Friday and miss the cut. We expect a bounce-back effort from JT this week, and 22/1 is great value.
Shane Lowry (+3000 to win)
Irishman Lowry took a T-14 at Riviera back in February, then a T-5 at the Honda, and a T-16 last week at Augusta. He also finished T-3 here at the Heritage in 2019, T-9 in 2021, and T-3 here last year. And he may have won if he hadn’t double-bogeyed the par-3 14th hole on Sunday. Also, Lowry ranks No. 7 on the Tour in driving accuracy this season. We love the 30/1 odds with this guy.
JT Poston (+1000 to finish top-10)
North Carolinian Poston took a T-6 at the American Express back in January, a T-10 at Innisbrook a few weeks ago, and a T-34 last week at Augusta. He also won his round-robin in the match-play event in Austin a month ago and had Scheffler down two with four to play in the round of 16, only to lose three of the last four holes and the match. On top of that, he took a T-6 here at the Heritage in 2019, a T-8 in 2020, and a T-3 last year. And we’re only looking for a top-10 finish this week at 10/1.
Elsewhere among Bovada’s RBC Heritage wagering offerings, Conners, who was playing great golf until last week, is getting +500 on a first-round “six-shooter” board against Young (+320), Finau (+350), Tom Kim (+400), Henley (+475) and Poston (+500); and Cantlay, Thomas, and Fitzpatrick are teamed at +2000 on the “all top 10 finish” board.
The first groups for this RBC Heritage tournament go off Thursday morning at 7 am ET.
