John Deere Classic Betting Preview & Free Picks
Event: John Deere Classic
Watch: Golf Channel, CBS
When: July 6-9
The PGA Tour makes one more stop in the Midwest this week for the 52nd edition of the John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in the Illinois countryside outside the Quad Cities. A field that includes only nine of the World Golf Rankings’ top 50 players will nonetheless compete for shares of a $7.4 million purse.
Unfortunately, though, this event no longer involves berths in the upcoming British Open to the top finishers.
Last week Rickie Fowler birdied the 18th hole on Sunday to reach a playoff with Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin, then birdied the first extra hole to win the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club. In picking up his first Tour victory in four years, Fowler also provided his financial backers with a winning payout of +1400.
Taylor Moore, Peter Kuest, and Lucas Glover tied for third last week, three shots off the pace; Adam Schenk finished seventh; Justin Lower placed eighth; and Aaron Rai, Brian Harman, Alex Noren, Peter Malnati, and Stephan Jaeger tied for ninth.
As for this week, the TPC John Deere course, home to this event since 2000, plays to a par-71 at around 7,270 yards. Scoring goes low here; the winner almost always shoots at least 20-under par, and Michael Kim shot 27-under in winning this event five years ago.
Last year JT Poston shot four rounds of 69 or better, including a first-round 62, to finish at -21 and win the John Deere by three shots over Emiliano Grillo and Chris-tian Bezuidenhout. Scott Stallings and Chris Gotterup tied for fourth; Denny McCarthy and Callum Tarren tied for sixth; Cam Davis and Maverick McNealy tied for eighth; and Patrick Flavin, Michael Gligic, and Chesson Hadley tied for tenth.
Each week we take a look at the online betting sites and highlight what we believe to be some of the best golf betting values on the board, with a few free picks to click. Odds to win and pairings for this week can be found at Bovada. Here’s our take on some of the field in this week’s John Deere Classic.
McCarthy tops the betting on Bovada’s John Deere Classic board at +1400. Russell Henley sits as the second choice at +1600, followed by Cam Young at +1800 and Ludvig Aberg at +2000. Everybody else is getting at least +2500, making for a wide-open betting affair.
Our top pick just finished in the top 10 last week and owns a good recent track record at this event.
Adam Schenk +2500 to win
Schenk, a Big Ten county native, owns three top-7 finishes over his last five tournaments, including a second (in a playoff) at Colonial six weeks ago and a seventh last week at Detroit, with four rounds in the 60s. He also took a T-6 here at the John Deere in 2019 and a T-4 in 2021 (the 2020 event was canceled). With a record like that, 25/1 looks like good betting value to us.
Brendon Todd +1000 to finish top-5
Todd isn’t playing super golf as of late, but he’s made the cut nine times in his last 12 starts, including last week at Detroit, when he started 68-68 before fading to a T-56. He’s also shot in the 60’s six times in his last ten rounds here at TPC Deere Run. And he owns some good internals this season, ranking 12th on the Tour in driving accuracy and 13th in putting. So 10/1 on a first-page finish with this guy in a field like this also seems like a good betting value.
Among Bovada’s John Deere Classic prop offerings, the threesome of Schenk, McCarthy, and Henley is getting +2000 on the “all top-10” board; any player to card 18 straight pars in the same round is getting +2500, and a four-man (or more) playoff, which would be fun to watch, is listed at +6000.
The first groups for this John Deere Classic tee off Thursday morning at 8 am ET, 7 am local time.
