Who to Bet this Weekend?
Tony Finau – To Win (+4000)
I really like Tony Finau in this event and find that his game is very well-suited for his overall success in San Antonio. Finau is an excellent ball striker off the tee and often finds himself in the top of the field in terms of distance gained. While playing an extremely lengthy course like TPC San Antonio, this will be a huge advantage. Finau also has experience at the Oaks Course, and while he has not had overwhelming success, he does have a 3rd place finish back in 2017. He has proven to be able to withstand the pressure of PGA Tour events, but there is one key factor that will need a course correction for his chance at victory come Sunday. In events where Finau has been at the top of the leaderboard, his putting has been on point. He can be inconsistent on the greens, but if he can improve his putting from his last two events, he will be dangerous this weekend.
Sam Burns – Top 10 Finish (+350)
To play devil’s advocate off of my Tony Finau pick, I’m backing Sam Burns to finish in the top 10 at the Valero Texas Open. Burns may very well be the best putter on tour, and even in his last two events in which he missed the cut, his putting excellence was on full display. Burns still has the ability to shorten the course with his distance off the tee, but his accuracy will need to be much improved for this bet to cash. He has been a bit shaky in his approach play, but when he has PGA Tour success, he only needs to be average in this facet, as his putter can shave strokes off his overall score. Burns finished just outside the top 20 at TPC San Antonio in 2019, but with a watered-down field, he has a real chance at a top 10 finish in 2025.
Matt Kuchar – Top 20 Finish (+300)
Kuchar is definitely not off to a strong start here in the 2025 season, but all of that can change after his four rounds on the Oaks Course. Kuchar has the most experience out of any member of the field in San Antonio and has had plenty of success as well. Kuchar has finished in the Top 20 seven times throughout his career and has a T22 as well. He does not hit the golf ball exceptionally far off the tee, which may seem like a disadvantage, but Kuchar has been able to sustain success here mainly due to his approach play. Look for Kuchar to hang around, make the cut, and find himself in the top 20 when all is said and done.
