Procore Championship Predictions: Navigating Silverado for Betting Success
Where: Silverado Resort and Spa – North Course (Napa, CA)
When: September 12-15
Watch: The Golf Channel, ESPN+
Just a few weeks removed from the 2024 Tour Championship in Atlanta, the FedEx Fall schedule begins this Thursday on the West Coast in the heart of wine country. Previously known as the Fortinet Championship, an interesting field is set to face the North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California. While many of the world’s best golfers will continue to enjoy some time off, there are a few household names worth watching in this tournament. The field is headlined by Sahith Theegala, Wyndham Clark, Corey Connors, Min Woo Lee, and Max Homa, all of whom will use this as their last warmup start before the Presidents Cup. Theegala and Homa return to the Procore Championship as the 2023 and 2022 winners, but both have been trending in very different directions recently. After a 3rd place finish in the Tour Championship, which could have easily been 2nd place were it not for a self-reported penalty on a bunker shot, Sahith Theegala is playing some of the best golf of his young career. Homa’s play, on the other hand, has been trending downward for much of the 2024 campaign. Can either of these two favorites win it all at Silverado? Read below as I break down the course and some of my best bets at the Procore.
The North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa is a par 72 track playing just over 7100 yards in length. This course is quintessential luxurious California golf, with lush fairways, tall trees, and daunting putting surfaces. While water hazards may not be as prevalent across the 18-hole landscape as some of the other courses these golfers will face, the few water features present an increased demand for approach shots. Off the tee, the field will be tested by the larger-than-life fairway bunkers and will often face narrow shots around the pine, oak, and of course redwood trees that make Silverado a sight to behold. The length of Silverado should not be a huge factor, as accuracy will reign supreme this weekend. The par 5s dogleg in both directions meaning that tee shot and approach angles will be vital to a golfer’s success. As is the case with many of California’s host courses on tour, the crosswinds will bear watching as they can create many yards of ball flight variance and wreak havoc if they are not taken into consideration. As we approach the opening round, I have my eyes on a few golfers who should excel in these conditions.
Max Homa – Top 10 Finish (+190)
Call this one a gut feeling. After being named a captain’s pick by American Presidents Cup captain Jim Furyk, Homa arrives at Silverado with some extra incentive. Many questioned his selection for the American team based on his less-than-stellar performances during the 2024 PGA Tour season. You’d have to go back to the Wells Fargo Championship in May to find Homa’s last Top 10 finish, but the California native knows this course and these conditions well. In 2023 at Silverado, he finished T-7 and didn’t record a single round that was even over par. Knowing that he needs to fine-tune his game ahead of the Presidents Cup, I expect Homa to play well enough to contend in this watered-down field.
Sahith Theegala – 1st Round Score Under 69.5 (-130)
Theegala is riding high coming into the Procore Championship after a 3rd place finish at the Tour Championship event at East Lake where he trailed only Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa in the final standings. Theegala is one of the rising stars on tour and won the 2023 Fortinet Championship on this same course. In that tournament he posted a 68-64-67-68 enroute to his 1st place finish. As another golfer who is gearing up for the highly anticipated Presidents Cup, I don’t expect that we will see Theegala’s first score over 70 in his opening round. Look for him to ride the momentum and get off to a great start on Thursday. He will need to find consistency with his putter and approach shots, but there are few golfers better than Sahith with respect to driving distance and play around the greens. If he can shorten this course and limit the need to scramble, Theegala, the betting favorite, should have a real chance to defend his title at Silverado.
Matt Kuchar – Top 20 Finish (+170)
Another player I love in this spot is seasoned veteran Matt Kuchar. While Kuchar may be well past his prime in terms of legitimate PGA Tour contention, this is a spot where I believe he can flourish. He doesn’t hit the ball far anymore, but his accuracy has been his saving grace. While golfers can put up low scores on the North Course with bombs off the tee, there is also a conservative strategy that will prove to be extremely effective. If the wind is swirling, Kuchar’s shorter drives may actually be advantageous. In his last two events, Kuchar finished T-12 and T-3 proving he still has something left in the tank.
