    NHL 2010.03.01 only pick:

Detroit Red Wings @ Colorado Avalanche

This will be the first match in the NHL after the Olympic Games. This should be seen as a second part of the season, and when the teams have to be more focussed. These two weeks off should work to improve the team and prepare them for the run to secure a playoff spot. Just 24 hours after the final game at the Olympics, between Canada and USA, which gave gold medal to Canada, some of those players and officials will return to NHL action almost immediately. The Detroit coach and defender Rafaelski were in yesterday's game and in all campaign, Rafaelski for USA and coach to Canada. Colorado will also have one player returning, with Statsny playing for USA.

Detroit "lost" their principal coach to Canada for the Olympics. Of course national pride should always take priority but it is one of a number of things which sees Detroit going on a path this year that could throw them out of the playoffs. And it will be the first time in 20 years if that happens. So, this break should be spent trying to improve the mechanics of the team. One of the problems of this team is their age - it's not a young team. Many of their players participated in the Olympics with their own national team, and despite not playing everyday, it is always a very intense tournament. Detroit would be favoured with this break if they could rest their players. But that hasnīt happened, and they ended up being one of the teams disadvantaged by the Games - the price of beign one of the strongest franchise in the NHL. Their record on road wasnīt positive in the first part of the season, due to a bad defence and sometimes, a struggling offence as well.

Colorado had almost all the team together during the break. They were able to rest and train in order to improve the chemistry in their team. This team had made a remarkable first part of the season, and if there were earlier doubts, they will have to face this second part as genuine contenders for a playoff spot. At home they were just amazing, with a 20-8 record, and also had a positive record on the road, with a 15-12 record. They can match a good defence with a good offence at home, with 2.23 goals allowed and 3.03 goals scored per game.

Today, Colorado will be fresh and happy to embrace this second part of the season, that could get them a playoff spot. Detroit are not in a good situation, many of their players have only just returned, as they had players playing in almost every game at the Olympics. Their bad first half of the season could be saved if they were able to rest and prepare for the latter stage of the season, but they had no time to do it. Earlier this season, Colorado were able to win at Detroit and at home. They lost in Detroit on New Yearīs Eve, but that is the kind of day where the old players can have the edge.

    Pick: Colorado Avalanche 3Way (1X2) +140 (2.40) Bookmaker

      NHL 2010.03.02 final 3 picks:

      Florida Panthers @ Atlanta Thrashers

Today we will have a matchup between two teams that know their own reality. Despite some good streaks that both teams had before the break, it's hard to imagine any of these teams achieve a playoff spot.

Florida had a good moment, where they were able to beat any big team on road, despite losing at home against weaker teams. This team have one big handicap, as they are a poor offense team, as we saw in the last 5 games before the break, where they had an average of 1.20 goals per game.

They had also an average of 2.77 goals allowed, but they know that they have to be better in defense in order to achieve more wins. Today, with 2 weeks off to rest, this team will try to implant their game, with a low pace, good defense, and try to exploit any offense opportunities they may have.

Atlanta had a bad season so far, as everyone expected more from them. However, no one expects more from them now. They will probably struggle specially on offense, after they traded their franchise player, and best player, Kovalchuk. They lost their icon, and more important, they lost their player that made their offense works.

They were not a good defense team, but Kovalchuk used to balance things. Now, and with 2 weeks to prepare a new kind of game, Atlanta will have to improve a lot their defense, as they haven't the same talent on offense to compensate a bad defense. Today, it will be their test, and lucky for them, they will host a poor offense team.

      Bet: Under 5.5 -110 (1.91) Bookmaker

      Buffalo Sabres @ Pittsburgh Penguins

It's hard to have a good reading after two weeks off. However, there are some details that could give us some edge.

Sabres had a good season before the break. They were one of the positive teams, as they were playing much better than anyone expected earlier in the season. They were a good team, with a great goalkeeper and a cohesive game. But this was specially at home. However, they will have a big hole today.

Their goalkeeper, one of the keys of their record, will rest today. Miller, was one of USA heroes in Olympics games, making great games and being perhaps the biggest key in the team that granted the plate medal. So, today, Sabre will be orphan of their goalkeeper, and against a team like Penguins, there is never good news.

Penguins will be back today to action. They made a bad season so far, as they had some bad losses. This team have the potential to do better, after all, they are the actual champions. This break was good to recover the injured players, and they have all their best players ok to embrace the rest of the season.

They will play with a mix of of feelings, as they have and angry Malkin and a overwhelmed Crosby, that scored the winning goal to the gold medal. Their offense is really good, and they will use all they can to be better in this part of the season. They will face a team that will have an handicap in their defense, and they can't let this game pass without a big win.

Bet: Pittsburgh Penguins PL -1.5 +170 (2.70) Bookmaker

      Philadelphia Flyers @ Tampa Bay Lightning: Over 5.5 -115 (1.87) 5Dimes

        NHL 2010.03.03 final 2 picks:

        Philadelphia Flyers @ Florida Panthers

Today we have a scenario with both teams playing back-to-back. The Flyers are coming from a 7-2 win at Tampa, starting this part of the season well and this mini road trip. In other hand, the Panthers went to Atlanta yesterday to lost 4-2 in a game where they had many opportunities but they didn't take advantage of them. Lucky for them, Atlanta also missed many easy goals, avoiding a big loss.

Florida are the one of the NHL teams that probably will struggle in this part of the season, and it's almost certain they will miss the playoffs. Their defence has to be their strongest point, as the offence usually struggles. Yesterday, they were able to score only once in the eight powerplays (PPs) they had. They were short-handed five times (Penalty Kills - PK) and conceding only one goal from them. The offence is a major issue, as they have been unable to score more than two goals in their last 14 games. With their offence struggling so badly, they have to win a battle of the strongest defence, but that rarely works aganst strong offensive teams.

Philadelphia are trying to recover the momentum they lost during December. This team has great potential with quality at both ends of the ice. Their goal is the NHL playoffs, and they still able to get there, however, they can't afford many losses from here. Their offence is one of the best in the league, with a list of talented players, all of whom can score. They are coming from a 7-2 win in Tampa, where they scored 3 PP goals and allowed none in 7 PK. In their "dark moments" in December, the Flyers lost 4-1 at home against the Panthers. Now, it's time to get them back.

Pick: Philadelphia Flyers PL -1.5 +210 (3.10) Bookmaker

        Colorado Avalanche @ Anaheim Ducks

After the Olympics break, Colorado re-opened the NHL season with a defeat at home against the Red Wings. That loss wasn't totally deserved, as they lost 3-2, suffering 2 PP goals, and failed to score in the late PP they had to tie the game. So, they didn't enter as they expected.

Anaheim will make their "re-debut" today, at home. They still have some aspirations for this season, and have renewed strengths. With their hero coming back after being a big part of the gold medal for Canada, this team expect to achieve something more, and at this point, the supporters and the team really believes that it's possible as long as they make a remarkable rest of season. Their calendar in the upcoming matches is not difficult, and they will give all they can to keep the hopes alive. At home, this team is really powerful in their offense, scoring more than 3.30 goals per game, allowing 2.80.

Colorado after the loss, will try to achieve a win today, but their good road record (15-11) is a little bit liar. They started very well the season, with several wins on road. But the last time they get a road win, was earlier in January. Since their powerful start, they weren't able to repeat it so frequently.

Before Christmas, the Ducks went to Colorado win 4-2. They made 43 shots, even playing on road, while the Avs only made 17. Both teams won exactly 32 face offs. Now, they will play in Anaheim, and if Ducks were able to made a easy game in Colorado, we can expect a easier game today. Specially because this Ducks usually deal very well with these Avs.

        Pick: Anaheim Ducks 3Way (1X2) +130 (2.30) Bookmaker

                NHL 2010.03.10 final 2 picks:

                Carolina Hurricanes @ Washington Capitals

Carolina is 8-1 in their last 9 games. After the break, they are 3-1. In that span of 9 games, they had a easy calendar, as, for me, only the win in Buffalo is something big. The other teams they met on the road were among the wakers of the league. Even the teams they met at home, despite the Devils, who is passing really bad moments, the teams were not a big deal. So, this good record they have right now were not to difficult and is not to surprising. It's true that the Hurricanes had a huge improvement, after they struggled during the first months with Staal out. This team is a team that his very cohesive and that's a good edge, as they never give up for a game. This team usually scores 2.40 goals per game on the road, allowing 3.20 goals per game. Lately they had improved that numbers, but as I said, they had facilities, and now will have a streak where they will face real and strong opponents.

Washington lost their last home game, just the third game they have lost at home this season. For a team that wishes to win the title, they can't have bad moments. The last lost before this one, where in the last days of December, 3-6, when they hosted.... the Hurricanes. So, the team can't say that they weren't advised, and it will be hard to explain another home loss against the Hurricanes. Capitals are really a strong team, that can very easily score, and have big names also in their defense. With some Russian players that will give their lives to compensate the lost of a Olympic medal with the Stanley Cup, this team will have to show how a champion is made. And that includes to be smart and learn from bad experiences, which I expect today.

                Pick: Washington Capitals PL -1.5 +105 (2.05) 5Dimes

Los Angeles Kings @ Chicago Blackhawks

Both teams are 2-2 after the Olympic break. So, there is a total of 8 games played involving at least one of these teams, and in that 8 games, we have 8 overs.

We have two teams in a good position to grant a place in the playoffs, as they are making good seasons. Despite e little better record for the Blackhawks, we can consider the season that LA is making better, as we all expected less from them. The Kings are a team that is playing really well, and can easily score, with 3.6 goals scored in the last 5 games. They are not the kind of team that faces the road games with fear, they go to fight, and know that scoring goals is their best way to try their chances on the road games. Today, they will face Chicago that is comfortable leading their division, and can try to explore that detail, as they need wins. In the Pacific Division, LA is tied with Phoenix and 3 wins behind San Jose. But they are not so far as it seems, as they are the betters second places with Phoenix.

Chicago is a great team with great values and some of medalist of Olympic games. They are leading by 7 wins their division, but after a loss at home and some hard games in the next games, they will try to achieve a win. The question is the value of their commit to it, and they are probably more interested in the next games. But the difference that this will make, it will be in their defense. Chicago never despise their offense, with 4.40 goals scored in their last 5 games. Today, they will probably give a chance to be a open game, with a fast pace and lot's of goals.

                Pick: Over 5.5 -120 (1.83) The Greek

                    NHL 2010.03.12 only pick:

New York Rangers @ Atlanta Thrashers

These two teams appear to be in the same situation so we have to look for an edge... Atlanta lost their last 3 games in a row, including one in Tampa and two at home against Carolina and Nashville. These were poor losses against "average" opponents.

New York started well after the Olympic break with a big win in Ottawa but since then have 4 losses in a row. However, that figure includes two home losses in OT against Pittsburgh and Buffalo. In the other two games, both on the road, they lost against Washington and New Jersey but didn't surrender easily. So, we can conclude that Rangers, despite the results, are in better shape overall than the Thrashers.

Against a soft team like Atlanta, that have one of the worst defenses in the league, it's the perfect game for the Rangers to bounce back. Their roster has lots of talent, despite them sometimes struggling offensively. After 3 straight games without points, Gaborik is ready to explode.

Atlanta's home advantage is something that is fading fast and I simply can't see them winning on home ice tonight.

Pick: New York Rangers 3Way (1X2) +135 (2.35) Bookmaker, Goalwin

                            NHL 2010.03.15 only pick:

Boston Bruins @ New Jersey Devils

For this matchup is hard to pass, as there is big value in the odds. It's true that the Devils got one of the most talented rosters, and will play at home.

But if we look in the current form and shape, we can't forget that the Bruins seems to be back to their best, the same team that were the best team in the regular season last year.... by far.

Boston is 3-4 since the break, losing the first game at home 1-4 to Montreal. Since that game, they won the game or lose it by one goal only. Their defense is showing some improvements, despite this being the six straight road game.

Despite this hard spot for the Bruins, there is no doubt that the team is taking it in the best way, as they are testing themselves to achieve a good form. The playoffs aren't lost yet, and fail that goal it will make this season a really bad season.

Their best win after the break was in Philadelphia, 5-1 to the locals Flyers. This show how this team faces the big games, games where they have to show that they deserve and should be seen as a playoff contenders.

The Devils acquired Kovalchuk just before the break. Kovalchuk is unquestionable in the Top 10 players of the league, at least. However, the team got a letdown spot, as they with several defeats and 3-3 after the break.

Their defense needs to improve, while their offense stills looking for the best chemistry. They are allowing more goals per game than the goals they score per game, and that's never good for a team that is a contender to the Stanley Cup.

Perhaps the bar was placed to high, everyone had big expectations for the team with Parise and Elias between others, but with Kovalchuk arriving to the team, all the spotlights are over the team. And the team isn't dealing well with it, showing that despite the talent, they can't handle with the off-game like a champions.

Today, they will have a really hard game, as they will face a strong defense that likes to play these games against big teams. Isn't because of the talent, as they have it, but concerning the mental preparation, the Devils shouldn't have so much favoritism.

Pick: Boston Bruins ML +145 (2.45) Bookmaker
