Arizona Cardinals at Washington Redskins
Betting Line: Redskins -3.5 -105 at 5Dimes
Arizona handled Carolina 28-21 last week but wasn’t impressive doing it. Washington, on the other hand, was impressive in a 28-14 win over the New York Giants last Sunday.
The Cardinals did a decent job on the ground last week but face a sterner test in this matchup. The Redskins did a good job of adding functional parts to their 3-4 defense in the offseason and won’t be as easy to run on. QB Kevin Kolb threw for 309 yards last week as WR Early Doucet (3-105-1) came up big but Washington’s secondary is a step up from Carolina’s. The Redskins’ pass rush is also better and we see Kolb being forced into quicker throws this week. Arizona will move the ball in this contest but we don’t see them marching up and down the field like last week.
Washington didn’t do a good job of establishing RB Tim Hightower last week but he will be amped to play well vs. the team that discarded him. QB Rex Grossmann did well against a Giants banged-up secondary last Sunday and now faces a group that is no better. Look for WR Santana Moss to be a frequent target as he will probably draw rookie CB Patrick Peterson, who was torched last week by another small, quick veteran wideout in Steve Smith. TE Fred Davis had a big game vs. the Giants and he, along with fellow TE Chris Cooley, should find some soft spots down the middle. The Redskins didn’t allow a sack last week and Arizona lacks a dominant pass rusher.
Arizona travels east for this early matchup and history isn’t on their side. It’s usually a tough go for western teams to travel east for early games and we expect the Cardinals to be in tough in this encounter. Grossman, while not dynamic, should have a big game against a secondary that surrendered 422 passing yards to rookie QB Cam Newton last week. Washington’s defense is improved but they must contain WR Larry Fitzgerald. We like the ‘Skins better on both sides of the ball and see a home cover here this week.
