Nice comeback on Monday. After back to back losing days, I avoided a losing streak by going 3-0 and picking up 3.99 units….all on underdogs. My winners were Atlanta, Arizona and Florida. Those dog winners are always extra sweet. Here are Tuesday’s hopefuls……….
Arizona +131 vs Phillies…………..I have not looked at the standing real closely in the past week or so, but all of a sudden the Diamondbacks are right there with the best teams in the national league. I was shocked and did not realize they were playing that well this year. Zona has won five in a row and eight of their last ten. Phillies playing better as well, but they are back home where I think they have been putting too much pressure on themselves. Pitching matchup appears to favor Arizona as well. Arizona won last three Owings starts, scoring 21 runs, while Phillies lost four of Lieber's last five starts. Owings already beat the phils once this year and made them look bad. I don’t see the phillies hitters turning it around that quickly on this young kid for Arizona. This game should probably be more of a pickem. I see value with the red hot Diamondbacks tonight.
Atlanta -103 vs Milwaukee………….Earlier in the year, I would have jumped all over the Brewcrew with Sheets at home at a great price, even vs Smoltz, not now. Brewers have been knocked down the ladder a few rungs, while Mr Smoltz, who will be 70 this year, at least it feels like he has been pitching that long, just continues to dominate. I hate the braves with a passion, but you have got to respect their organization and guys like Smoltz. I am not betting the Braves tonight, I am betting John Smoltz. Even if I lose this game, I would do it all over again. It is the right side to be on. Braves win 3-1.
Houston -130 vs Cincinnati……………….Are first glance this line appears to be a joke. We know how bad Cincy is, but I did not realize Houston was playing this poorly, so this line is about right, maybe should be -140, -150 tops. The Pittsburgh Pirates just made the Reds looks like a minor league team, so playing at Houston should not be any better. One of these teams has to win tonight and I am sure the struggling Stros are very happy to see the reds come to town seeing how they have beaten them seven of nine times this year. I cannot pass up this game at this line. I look for the Astros to take out some frustration tonight. Reds got their win yesterday, they are good now for this week.
Florida +122 vs Cubs………….Another one of my rules in general is to take Willis anytime he is a dog. Sure there is a reason he is a dog, but he is always capable of coming out and throwing a gem. Throw in the fact that they are playing the Cubbies, who you just never know how they are going to play, and we have a solid pick. Willis (6-3, 4.80 ERA) is 4-1 with a 3.34 ERA in five road starts this season, and has been even more impressive in his career at Wrigley Field, going 2-1 with a 1.60 ERA in five starts. On the other side of the hill, Jason Marquis (5-1, 2.60) takes the mound Tuesday seeking his first win in nearly three weeks. What this tells me is that he is still pitching pretty well with his low era, but has not won in a while. He apparently is not getting any runs scored for him. Now add Willis in the mix and they may not score many again. He cannot hold up forever like this and I think he is due for a bad game and may get shelled today, especially if the wind is blowing out a Wrigley. This one has a real good chance of winning tonight.
Oakland -144 vs Texas……………..The Rangers own the worst record in the majors and have lost a season-high six straight games - their longest skid since they dropped eight in a row from Aug. 8-16, 2005. Texas is a major league-worst 7-18 on the road. What else do you need to know?? Even when the rangers were good, they have always sucked on the road. Now they even suck at home. The A’s have been struggling offensively and that is a concern, but they boast the AL's top pitching staff with a 3.54 ERA. Odds greatly in my favor of winning this one, but you never know.
There you have it. A pretty big card from me tonight. Three favs and two dogs. I do have the feeling more doggies are going to start barking now and I am trying to find more dogs to play. Normally I load up on those small favs as you can tell by the amount of favs (92) as opposed to dogs (75) I have played. I have done well when picking dogs the past week or so. It will be a good night to lay around and watch baseball tonight. I am still sick and the wife has a meeting tonight to go to. I get the remote control, hope I remember how to use it.
Good Luck Everybody!!
