If you're a freak like me then you should consider getting a premium accuweather membership (just $7/month). I know weather.com gives hour by hour reports, and while the long term forecast is best for football, I find the accuweather to provide good data that's worth the $7.

Thanx Jerry. I'm bad about cleaning out my favorites. Queen hipped me to this one a few years ago. Only have time on the weekends to look at all of em. And I do LOL. Definitly a great tool and if ya don't have the time to look at all of em, look at the ones your thinking of playing. Queen had a good one of if there is 15+ MPH winds from home to center, it was a good chance of going over. You just have to feel it out for yourself. But definitly a good tool. Keep an eye on the weather in Minn. Real windy there LMFAO. That one brings back bad memories LOL. Why on earth would they post the weather there is beyond me. ****ed me up but good one time

RJ, one thing about the site Jerry posted is, you can't depend on what they predict when it comes to rain. I took a bet one time cause they said it was going to start raining and rain all night and it could have just made it to a final without going the whole nine innings so I took the best starting pitcher and it never fkn rained. fk me running. A good weather site can make you money. But there should be a free one somewhere. Us poor folk got to stick together LOL

LOL, $7 is cheap!! Whatever you use just make sure you (like you said) check hour by hour. Lotsa people just see what's forecast for the start of the game and miss out on the big picture. Those are the poor fellas that will probably lose some money for not being more precise.

sean, every park is different. Wind can affect it either way, and rain typically increases the odds of more runs (due to pitchers being yanked, etc.)

April showers: MLB bettors could get frostbitten from winter weather

A quick glance at the thermometer during the opening week of the MLB season and fans get a cold shiver down their spine. Most northern teams are still playing in the shadow of winter, with temperatures dropping into the 20s and games getting postponed due to cold weather.

The elements have always influenced baseball but this early-season mix of cold, rain, snow and wind is wreaking havoc on major league games while keeping oddsmakers on their toes when preparing odds for the upcoming schedule.

“Weather is always a factor for setting (lines),” says Peter Korner a lines consultant with the Sports Club. “We’ve even seen snow early in the year. That makes it far different playing when you are concentrating on the weather and not baseball.”

Setting the total is the biggest area in which linesmakers consider the weather. Many factors like moisture, slick surfaces and strong winds can affect the outcome of the game. In places like Wrigley Field in Chicago, the winds carry the ball so strongly that sportsbook wait until mere hours before game time to release a total, hoping to get a better read on which way the Windy City gusts are blowing.

“We will tend to shade about half a run,” says Korner. “If the total is around 8 ½ and you don't no whether to go up a half or down a half, we will send it out at 8 and see how the gamblers deal with it.”

Professional bettors keep a close eye on the barometer when preparing their plays on early season baseball, trying to find the ever-elusive edge over the sportsbooks. While all wise guys consider weather a major factor in the outcome of a game, they all have different opinions on what part of the game is effected the most by the environment.

“I think (bad weather) impacts the pitcher the most if it's just plain cold, but it depends what type of pitcher,” says Scott Rickenbach of Covers Experts. “It affects the pitchers that rely a lot on grip to get the movement they want on pitches. If their stuff is not so much impacted by grip, they won't be impacted as much.”

Baseball bettors saw examples of the weather’s influence on pitching this week during the Chicago White Sox opening series as well as the Chicago Cubs’ game on Wednesday night. The White Sox pitchers, playing in chilly confines of U.S. Cellular Field in which game-time temperatures dipped as low as 31 degrees and the wind chill measured 19, allowed 20 runs on 26 hits in two games.

Their crosstown rivals, the Cubs, reacted differently to the frigid weather. Offseason acquisition Ted Lilly made his pitching debut in Cincinnati on Wednesday night and, according to Chicago manager Lou Piniella, got a helping hand from the cold. Piniella, knowing hitters would have a tough time getting around with the bat, told Lilly and closer Ryan Dempster to rely on their power rather than breaking pitches.

"I said, 'It was 30 degrees and snowing. Get the ball over the plate and you'll win a ballgame. Make them hit it,'" Piniella told MLB.com after the Cubs’ 4-1 victory.

Many sharps play the under on totals during cold weather because batters are less active than pitchers or fielders, freezing up while they sit in the dugout waiting to hit.

However, looking back at the last five seasons, out of 12 northern teams (Chicago Cubs and White Sox, New York Yankees and Mets, Boston, Washington, Cleveland, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Detroit, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) seven have tended to play over during the treacherous weather of April.

Much like Wednesday’s game in Comerica Park between Detroit and Toronto (where bettors had to factor in wind, rain and snow) the weather can help the hitting team catch some breaks and tally extra runs on the scoreboard.

The Tigers right fielder Magglio Ordonez had a tough time reading fly balls because of the flurries and strong winds, leading to a seven-run eighth inning for the Blue Jays, which nearly blew a nine-run Tigers lead and sent the game over the 8 ½-run total.

"Torii Hunter says he always struggles here," Detroit outfielder Curtis Granderson told MLB.com. "Ichiro misjudged one here. And those are Gold Glove outfielders. It's something about when they come here. You have to stay at it and keep checking all the different elements, and know exactly who's hitting and who's pitching every time. Because every little bit will help make this field like the other fields. Whoever I get a chance to talk to, I'll try to pick their brain a little bit."

Baseball bettors looking to take advantage of the weather situation this weekend need only to look as far as Cleveland, where the Indians host the Seattle Mariners starting Friday. The Forecast is calling for snow showers and temperatures in the upper 20s and Cleveland is already climatized to the April weather after this week’s series in Chicago.

Seattle also plays inside the temperate environment of Safeco Field and doesn’t have as much experience playing in the sort of weather expected for this weekend’s games. Saturday’s starter, Jeff Weaver, pitched in similar weather during the World Series when he was with the St. Louis Cardinals

"I never get used to it," Weaver told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "It's bone-chilling … If you get loose before you head out there, I think the pitcher definitely has an advantage because the position players are just standing or sitting around. And when it's cold, that bat and ball get a little heavier."

Oddsmakers have set the Mariners as +132 underdogs for Friday’s series opener with left-handed pitcher Horacio Ramirez taking the mound. The Indians will give the ball to righty Paul Byrd and as -140 home favorites. The total is set at 10 runs.
