    ~~ BIFF'S BASES - APR. 9th ~~

Off to a Rocky start for the month as usual, but good things are soon to come I believe. I got one early game that I'm rolling with.

The Blue are 8-3 in their last 11 attempts at stopping a 3 game sweep. Winning in this situation is something they're familiar with, and is something they did the last time these two teams met when Arizona also took the first two games at home. I know Arizona is going to have some notes on Kuroda because they were the other team in the bidding war with the Dodgers and Mariners. (They let go after the did the deal with Haren.) However, what good is winning the bidding war if you can't beat your opponents with the prize. Today seems like the best chance at doing that.

I like the Dodgers to come out strong in a day game where Arizona struggled mightily last year offensively. They were ranked 30th last year in OPS% in day games. They're currently the highest scoring team in baseball, and I think a regression towards the mean may be in store today. They've scored 31 runs at night in 4 games so far this year, compared to 19 runs in their 4 day games this year. Last year they scored 158 runs in 45 day games, averaging over 1 run less than at night. (3.51 compared to 4.74) As still the youngest team in the majors, this disparity looks to be holding true so far this year as well.

Spring training stats have been getting me in trouble so far, but Owings was all over the place in March. Kuroda was very consistent. I think Owings could easily slip here. Lyons doesn't seem too confident in the closers role, and both Slaten and Pena pitched the past two games, so they'll probably be taking a day off. Stephen Drew is also most likely going to sit for Ojeda today. He has a thigh bruise. I might have one or two more today, but I'm in need of starting a win streak, so I'd have to love the game if Dodgers win it here this afternoon.

I just can't catch a break right now. Dodgers leave Kuroda in too long and he ends up tossing the game away in the 7th. Walking the pitcher to put the go ahead run in scoring position, and that's just what he did... score. The only thing I can do is continue to cap these games the way I've had success in the past. This next play is making me nervous, but those seem to be the ones I win. Pelfrey is bad, but so is Kendrick. He got over 6 runs of support on average last year, and that let his control problems to be well hidden. Ironic this 9 game win streak started with this game exact matchup last year. The Phillies have been the underdogs in the last 7 meetings and won them all. They are dogs again, and it seems perfect for the streak to be broken. I'm pretty sure this will come down to a game of bullpens, so I'm taking the better one in my opinion. Also, Rollins is out tonight which helps things. Wind blowing in from right could be a small factor for the lefties in the Phillies lineup. I may have one more tonight, but for now here goes nothing...

** I just added the Cubbies, because Duke was left out there a long time in his first start, and I think the Cubs could break their cold streak against lefties today. If Duke only goes 5-6 innings like I think he will, that Pirates bullpen is one of the worst in my book. Currently they are on my DNB list. This will more than likely be my last play of the day, as I try and keep it to 3 plays a day max. I like the Padres and Cardinals tonight, but seems to be too cheap of a price on the Padres after the Giants finally won it last night. I'm not going to screw with their sad attempt to gain momentum into today. If they are going to win, it'll more than likely be a pitching battle, and that's what San Diego does best.

Well I was able to rebound from that tough loss with the Dodgers to make it a profitable night. Almost lost another heartbreaker with the Cubbies, but they finally prevailed as the Bucs bullpen finally showed it's true colors. Hope I can parlay this into a couple winners for tomorrow and get back to .500.
