    JoePa's WEEK #11 CFB Picks

    JOEPA'S UPDATED YTD: 118 - 88 - 1
    UNITS: +16.25
    Week 10: 11 - 11
    MAC: 29 - 15 - 1

Last week very average at best! Lets get this week kicked off with one of two midweek MAC match ups that could very well help decide the West Division champ. Love college football on the tube during the week.

    TUESDAY -

    Ball State at Toledo
    Tuesday, November 6, 2012 • 8:00 pm ET / ESPN2
    Series: Toledo leads 19-17-1

Ball State won @ Army 30-22 last week, as QB Keith Wenning completed his 50th career touchdown pass with 11:50 left in the first quarter. He now has 17 touchdown passes this season, tied for sixth on the Ball State single season list while WR Jamill Smith had his seventh career touchdown reception which also marked his fourth in the last six games. Toledo won @ Buffalo 25-20 on Oct. 27 as the Rockets gained 412 yards of total offense, 297 of which came in the second half as junior RB David Fluellen rushed for 228 yards and two TDs and passed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career. He now has 1,181 yards on the season, the ninth-highest total for a Rocket in a season. When these two get together they always play it close.

In the head-to-head versus common opponents this year (CMU,WMU,EMU), both teams are 3-0 with Ball State outscoring their opponents 108-80 and Toledo outscoring the same foes 139-99. Worth a mention is that Toledo played two of those three games on the road winning the toughest match up at WMU 37-17, while the Cardinals played WMU at home and won 30-24 in the waning seconds of that game.

Even though both are bowl eligible, I think Toledo has more to play for. The Rockets are 5-0 in the MAC West Division right behind Northern Illinois (who stands at 6-0 and won at Ball State 35-23) and they meet head-to-head next week in Dekalb. UT then finishes out the season versus the lowly Akron Zips at home. This is the last West Division meetup for the 3-2 Cardinals this season who finish the season at home versus Ohio and then on the road at Miami,OH, so they are virtually rubbing the magic lamp to get to the MAC Championship game. This game could either be a big Rockets blowout, or very close but I will side with the team who has much more to play for.

Toledo is 2-5 ATS in its last 7 games when playing Ball State
Toledo is 2-4-1 ATS in its last 7 games when playing at home against Ball State
Toledo is 5-2 SU in its last 7 games when playing at home against Ball State
Ball State is 4-6 SU in the last 10 games when playing Toledo
Ball State is 6-4 ATS in the last 10 games when playing Toledo
Average points per game scored in the series; Ball State 25.7 and Toledo 28.7

My Pick: TOLEDO -6 vs. Ball State L.....had BSU capped then changed my mind, only saw UT vs. Cincy

    OVEN MITT YTD: 7 - 2
    Week 10: 0 - 1

    "DEFINITELY"
SAN DIEGO STATE -7 vs. Air Force W

        WEDNESDAY NIGHT -

        Bowling Green at Ohio
        Wednesday, November 7, 2012 • 8:00 pm ET ESPN
        Series: Bowling Green leads 36-25-2

Bowling Green beat Eastern Michigan 24-3 last week. The Falcons now have five straight wins for the first time since 2004 when that team rattled off seven straight victories and DT Chris Jones has 11.5 sacks this season and has 27.0 sacks in his career, second-most in school history. BGSU RB John Pettigrew recorded career-bests in carries (24), and yards (136). Ohio beat Eastern Michigan 45-14 last Thursday and are therefore on a short week. Ohio out-gained Eastern Michigan 559-305 as the Bobcats’ 500-yard plus effort was Ohio’s second-largest offensive output of the season. Junior RB Ryan Boykin totaled a season-best 128 yards rushing and one touchdown and QB Tyler Tettleton threw three touchdown passes for the sixth time in his career and finished with 255 yards passing.

OU 3-10 ATS last 3 meetings vs. BGSU
OU 4-1 SU last 5 vs. BGSU
OU 1-5 ATS last 6 at home vs. BGSU
OU 1-4 SU last 5 at home vs. BGSU
BGSU is 6-4 SU last 10 meetings vs. OU
BGSU is 7-3 ATS last 10 meetings vs. OU
BGSU averages 33ppg last 10 meetings and OU averages 22ppg

Comparing stats versus common opponents (EMU, UMASS, MUO, Akron) BGSU is 4-0 while Ohio is 3-1 losing in Oxford a couple weeks ago. Against those same opponents BGSU is averaging 27.25 ppg while surrendering 6.25 ppg to the opposition, and the Bobcats are scoring 34 ppg and allowing 24.75. Also, the Falcons averaged 399 yds. of total offense in those match ups and allowed 217 yds, while Ohio garnered an average of 491 yds and gave up 424 yds. It seems that the best defense for OU is their relying on their offense to score more points than their defense allows. BGSU has the better defense and is +8 in turnover margin in those common games while Ohio is +3 with two of those turnovers coming against lowly Akron.

It's crunch time in the MAC East and this game should be close. BGSU and Ohio are tied for 2nd in the MAC East Division, while overall the Bobcats stand at 8-1 and the Falcons 6-3. Games remaining on the schedule for BGSU include two home games versus Kent State and Buffalo, while Ohio has roadies at Ball State and Kent State. A must win for both teams to get to the MAC Championship. I'm a Kent guy and could never pick the Bobcats.....beware!

My Pick: BOWLING GREEN +3 @ Ohio (Bovada) W.....SU and OU still sucks! LOL

          THURSDAY NIGHT -

          FLORIDA STATE -12.5 @ Virginia Tech L

The Noles were a popular national title pick this season but a late NC State comeback however threw notions of a national title out the window. FSU still ranks 10th in BCS standings and winning the ACC championship game would give them a spot in the Orange Bowl so there is still plenty to play for. Only six teams gain more yards per game than Florida State on offense but the statistics were padded with two FCS opponents early in the year. FSU is also the third highest scoring team in the nation with 44.8 points per game.

Florida State QB E.J. Manuel has had a strong senior season with 70% but the Seminoles lost leading rusher Chris Thompson to a knee injury in October. Soph RBs James Wilder and Devonta Freeman have picked up the load and Florida State is the 14th best rushing team in the nation with nearly 237 yards per game on average. Only Oregon gains more yards per rushing attempt than Florida State.

On defense only Alabama and Notre Dame have allowed fewer points per game and Florida State has the top ranked defense in terms of yards allowed per game, allowing a stunning 3.49 yards per play and just 227.1 yards per game, both numbers that edge Alabama or LSU. Last time out, despite a -4 turnover margin, Florida State dominated Duke 48-7, a team that may win the Coastal division in its last game. The Seminoles were off last weekend and should be ready to play impress in the national spotlight.

Virginia Tech is going through its worst season in 20 years and has not lost more than five games since 1992. If they lose tonight and finish 6-6 a marginal bowl game is their best case scenario. Virginia Tech has nine starters from a defense that allowed just over 17 and 305 yards per game last season. Turnovers have been a huge factor in the decline as the Hokies are -5 on the season in turnover margin. Virginia Tech has not finished a season with a negative turnover differential since 2003 and they were only -1 that year.

Junior QB Logan Thomas has been a big part of the problem accounting for 12INTs and several fumbles. He is still a duel threat, rushing for 469 yards last season and leading the team with 422 yards so far this season but his passing game leaves a lot to be desired. Thomas completed nearly 60% of his passes last season and is at barely over 53% this season. He thrown more INTs this season than last year and he is only one sack short of last season's 14 game total. The receiving corps lost the top two receivers from last season and only returned one player that had more than three catches last season.

On both sides of the ball Virginia Tech has average team numbers and with the turnovers it is not a surprise that the Hokies have struggled. Four of the five losses have come by double-digit margins and they enter this off back-to-back losses by big margins in ACC road games. Virginia Tech is a perfect 4-0 (2-2 ATS) at home this season as all five losses have come on the road. Virginia Tech will be up for this game but they will need to play better than their best game of the season to stay close.

ARKANSAS STATE -7 vs. Louisiana Monroe W

Sun Belt is very interesting with three teams tied at 4-1, and two teams of those teams face one another tonight. ULM has been the conference darling with an early season win over Arkansas, playing Auburn and Baylor both close. Last week the Warhawks were destroyed at home losing by 16 and were out-gained by 200 yards versus rival ULL in their first Sun Belt loss. Losing QB Kolton Browning to injury certainly was a factor. Arky State has gone about their business winning four straight including three of four roadies in conference play. The Arkys won 24-19 in the match-up last season and few expected the Red Wolves would looking to repeat as Sun Belt champions with a first-year head coach. The offenses mirror each other although the Red Wolves are the superior rushing team.

          UNDER 60 ArkSt/ULM L

ULM still has their defense, but their offensive output should be offensive versus a good Red Wolves D and O who should eat up the clock with their running attack.
