      Check this out Reggie:

Freshman Chris Ortiz emerges in practices for Kent State men's basketball team
By Allen Moff | Staff writer

An unlikely statistical leader has emerged as the Kent State men’s basketball team enters its second week of practice.

“We brought in officials and scrimmaged last week, and I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing, but we had a freshman lead us in scoring and rebounding. That was Chris Ortiz,” said Golden Flashes second-year coach Rob Senderoff. “He’s probably been our leading or second-leading scorer over the first 10 practices, and he’s our leading rebounder. He has played very, very well this preseason.

“That’s good that Chris has led us. But if I’m going to tell you the last time (a freshman was the scoring and rebounding leader in practice), it would probably be never.”

Ortiz, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., was ranked the sixth-best player in New York by MaxPreps. He played for prep power Christ the King, which won the New York City championship his senior year, then joined South Kent Prep School in Connecticut last season.

Ortiz actually wasn’t a major scorer at either school, but there’s a logical reason for that, according to Senderoff.

“He played with two NBA players at South Kent, and he played with a McDonald’s All-American at Christ the King,” said Senderoff. “He just wasn’t asked to score much at those schools, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that he’s becoming more of a scorer in college.”

Senderoff is looking forward to a closed scrimmage this Saturday at St. Bonaventure, to see how Ortiz and his other newcomers play against tough outside competition.

“We’ve had some freshmen play well, but are we playing well because we’re playing against each other or are we really playing well?” said Senderoff.

“I go back every night and wonder are we good, or are we just good against each other? We’ll start to find that out on Saturday,” Senderoff said.
