Temple Owls face another Ohio roadblock

            BY MIKE KERN / kernm@phillynews.com

            IT'S THIS BASIC:

If Temple (5-3, 3-2) wins its final three MAC games it will win the league's East title for the

If the Owls don't, well, who knows? But at the very least they'd need help, maybe a lot.

They've been here before. In 2009 they took a nine-game winning streak into the regular-season finale at Ohio. Playing without running back Bernard Pierce and his injured shoulder they lost, 35-17, even though fellow-freshman Matt Brown rushed for 172 yards.

And it was Ohio that proceeded directly to the MAC title game.

Last November there was a three-way tie for first when Ohio came to South Philly for the next-to-last game. The Owls, after losing Pierce at the start with a leg issue, trailed by 21 in the last quarter. The final was 31-23. They would also fall the next week, again without Pierce, at Miami of Ohio, and were one of only two bowl-eligible teams that got left out of the postseason.

Now the Owls again find themselves in a three-way tie in the loss column with Ohio (5-3, 2-2) and Miami (3-5, 2-2), heading into tonight's ESPN photo op at Ohio. After this they have Miami and Kent State (2-6, 1-3) at home sandwiched around Army (3-5), also at the Linc.

            So . . .

"We're in the grind of the season," said first-year coach Steve Addazio. "We've got to find a way to get this next game, and that's where it is. We're [upset] that we let the last game (13-10 loss at Bowling Green) get away. Obviously, we know we have [the players'] attention. We still have to go on the road, into really hostile territory, against an outstanding football team that's now at full strength, as opposed to where they were [not long ago]."

Did we mention that Pierce played the last game with a tender hamstring and still rushed for 107 yards on 17 carries? Or that Brown, who Addazio noted got a little worn down late, added 119 on 22. And that still wasn't quite enough. Pierce's status remains to be played out.

"At the end of the day, it means other guys have to step up in other phases," Addazio said. "When your number's called, then deliver, right? We don't have great depth on offense. We lost [left tackle] Pat Boyle in that game. People don't understand that. That's fine. It's what it was. We had to take [guard] Derek Dennis and move him over. And he didn't even practice. That's where you are, at this time of year. You have to be strong-willed to overcome all that.

"I'm not going to make excuses, or whine about it, because everybody's in the same boat. You've got to find solutions. I like our attitude, because it's right. You want that to be rewarded. But nobody's giving it to you. You don't get any brownie points for it. You've got to earn it."

History lessons can be a good thing, as long as they actually induce you to come up with the necessary corrections. Addazio and much of his staff wasn't here for those last two Ohio disappointments.

Many of his players were. And, ultimately, it comes down to them.

"We've got to get back to playing our brand of football, how we should be playing," said linebacker Quenten White, part of a defense that's only given up 80 points, 36 in one game. "We got off that a little bit. It's the same as with any loss. You have to fix up what you messed up."

It's two teams that pretty much try to win the same way, and want the same thing. There's only room for one at the top. The reward is most likely a trip to Detroit for the Dec. 2 MAC championship game.

Where else would you rather be that night?

"A lot of the older players understand that every MAC game is pretty serious," said another senior, offensive lineman Wayne Tribue. "But everyone knows how important this one is. A loss could determine the fate of our season, so everyone's ready to go."

Or, as Addazio put it, all hands on deck.

Coach, best of luck on that surgery - let us know what they give you for meds! :):)

I'll be with you on Kent St tomorrow, and like Utah, Bama, and Rutgers Sunday. The Iowa line seems fishy to me... Michigan's defense doesn't do well with physical teams (see MSU), and Iowa will surely want to pound it at them coming off that horsesh1t performance vs Minnesota. Does that performance impact the line? I cannot figure out Michigan, so I'm going to stay away. I'll probably be the other way on the Southern Miss game... SMU has top 20 scoring offense and defense, and ECU is in the bottom five in turnovers... ECU depleted at WR corps, heralding a third-teamer as having a good game last week with five catches in a win vs Tulane.

                          Best of luck Coach!
