Week 7 preview: Steubenville at Massillon
            Updated: Wednesday, October 6, 2010

            TIME 7:30 p.m., Friday

            SITE Paul Brown Tiger Stadium

            RECORDS Steubenville 6-0; Massillon 5-1

LAST WEEK Steubenville 39, Wheeling Park, W.Va. 0; Massillon 56, Brantford, Ont. 7

LAST MEETING Steubenville won, 13-3, last year.

WHAT TO WATCH The Steubenville Big Red come to Massillon to play the Tigers for the first time since 1978, and it seems like little has changed. Steubenville is the No. 1-ranked team in Division III. The Big Red has had trouble filling its schedule with Ohio teams and will play eight teams from outside Ohio this year. Massillon and Ursuline are it, and it’s a two-game Buckeye state stretch. Steubenville isn’t fancy on offense, but head coach Reno Saccoccia knows what his players do well. Anthony Pierro is the Big Red’s QB, and it’s a position he has been groomed for. Massillon’s offense has showed signs of being the high-octane attack most thought it would be, but the naysayers want to see the Tigers put up points and yards against a quality defense. The Tigers hung 56 on Brantford, Ontario and 42 on Firestone. Both of those teams were outmatched. Steubenville will come after Massillon QB Kyle Kempt to test his ability to get rid of the ball quickly. Look for Massillon to be basic early. Don’t be surprised if head coach Jason Hall unveils a few wrinkles he has been holding back. This is the start of a tough four-game stretch for Massillon to close out the season and make a strong playoff push.

No league in the area with schools in the same size in their region......Dover would be the closest and maybe Cambridge and those two schools are over an hours drive away. Lots of small schools in the area and the ones their size are just weak programs so they wouldn't gain any points for the playoffs or anything, so they joined alot of schools in Ohio and WVA in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. It goes by class (size) of school. Steubenville is too strong even for their rivals like Indian Creek to compete against and they've kicked the asses of the OVAC schools more than 2x their size. They used to play lots of Youngstown area schools but many of the programs there are weak as well. Here's a link to the OVAC football standings page.....we even had a local team drop out of the IVC which is a 5 county area league with some schools with 175-150 boys and then a couple of schools with 50+ in 9-12 grades. They kept getting their rears kicked and the OVAC has teams more in their class.

I'm taking Steubenville -4 (according to the line I just made up)

Massillon is too one dimensional on offense. Steubenville isn't scared of Massillon...anything but. If the Big Red can force some turnovers from the young Massillon QB they should roll. My guess....Steubenville 24 Massillon 16

On another note...GL Flyers this weekend!

On another note.....Massillon is an independent as well. They like to think of themselves as a national team following in the trend of ESPNU!
