Big Red defeats Morgantown

STEUBENVILLE - Morgantown did bring speed to Harding Stadium Saturday. Big Red, however, brought the answers.

Those answers came in the form of another solid defensive effort, a ball-control offense and the powerful leg of kicker Hunter Naylor. They propelled Big Red to a 35-7 victory over the Mohigans.

The inaugural match between the two tradition-rich football programs served as the opener for the Rally in Death Valley. Both teams entered at 4-0.

Heading into the battle, coach Reno Saccoccia knew his Big Red had to keep Morgantown's speed "under control." The best way to do that, he noted, involving playing "solid defense and keeping the ball on offense." Mix in Naylor's three consecutive kickoffs into the end zone and the Steubenville's mission was accomplished.

Big Red's defense, described by Morgantown coach John Bowers as "physical, tough and nasty," held the Mohigans to 175 yards on the day. Steubenville allowed just 75 yards in the first half and forced two turnovers. Morgantown's first three possessions would produce just 31 yards in offense. Thanks to Naylor's booming kicks, the Mohigans began the majority of their first half drives at their own 20 yard line.

Meanwhile, the Big Red offense would have its best day of the season. Steubenville ran the football 53 times for 266 yards. Senior quarterback Anthony Pierro hit on 11 of 15 passes for 129 yards and junior Marcus Prather added 20 more with his 3 for 5 showing. Thus, Big Red would finish with 415 yards in total offense and 24 first downs. Saccoccia's crew held the football a shade more than 31 minutes.

"This was a great team effort," Saccoccia said. "We played focus, we played fast, we played physical and we played until we heard the echo of the whistle. We did a great job on defense and our offense did a good job of moving the ball. The kicking game really set the pace for us. As a coach, you can't ask for anything more. Our guys did what we expected."

After the defense forced a three-and-out, Big Red started its first possession at the Morgantown 40. Junior Leshawn Luke got the scoring started when he blasted his way in from a yard out. The seven play drive took 2:23. The big play was Anthony Pierro's 20 yard connection with senior wide receiver Shaq Petteway. Lucas McClurg drilled the PAT.

Big Red would strike again just four minutes when Luke plowed in from the 2. The eight-play scoring drive covered 65 yards and took 1:58. Anthony Pierro threw for 36 yards on the march hooking up with senior wide out Jordon Meyer (he made a fantastic grab the play); Petteway and senior tight end Blake Carroll. McClurg again split the uprights for the extra point.

Steubenville got the football right back following a fumble recovery by junior Najee Murray, who on the play prior to the turnover put a vicious hit on Morgantown running back Joey Musick. Big Red would start its third drive of the opening quarter at the Mohigan 45.

Junior Jo Jo Pierro ran for 16 yards and big brother Anthony Pierro added 13 more, giving Big Red a first down at the Morgantown 16. Anthony Pierro then found Carroll wide open over the middle for the score. McClurg again was perfect on his kick.

Morgantown's speedy offense (the Mohigans entered the game averaging 49 points per game) began showing some signs of life on its fourth possession of the half. They moved from their own 22 to the Big Red 44. The big play was an 18-yard Alex Watson completion to Jordan Adams. The drive also featured a nasty hit by Big Red's Meyer on Morgantown's Musick. The threat ended when Jo Jo Pierro appeared from the bottom of the pile with a loose football.

Following this turnover, Steubenville would go on a long march that ended with it coughed up the pigskin deep in Morgantown territory.

Big Red's final score of the half came at the 3:12 mark when Anthony Pierro again found Carroll running free over the middle. The 39-yard drive took just 30 seconds off the clock. Jo Jo Pierro added 13 yards on the ground and senior Josh Thompson, who ran hard and fast all day, broke loose for 12. McClurg added the extra point.

Steubenville would threaten again very late in the half after Anthony Pierro and Petteway connected for 21 yards. The drive would end with a Morgantown sack. On this series, Meyer was injured as he tried to haul in a pass. The senior would not return.

The Mohigans got on the board late in the third quarter following an 11-play 99 yard drive. Watson hit Chris Glover for an 11-yard score. Nick Romito added the extra point.

The final score of the afternoon came with 35 seconds remaining as Big Red's Deshon Redmond fought his way into the end zone from four yards out. The drive covered 46 yards and ran nearly five minutes off the clock. On the play prior to the touchdown, Redmond grabbed a Prather pass for 14 yards. McClurg again nailed the point from placement.

As he has all season, Jo Jo Pierro led the Big Red rushing attack, getting 87 yards on 15 carries. Thompson finished with 51 yards, Anthony Pierro with 45 and Luke with 37. Petteway had four grabs for 75 yards and Carroll caught three for 42. The 129 yards passing represented Anthony Pierro's high for the season.

When asked about the success of his passing game, Saccoccia simply said "the passes were there."

"Their defense was looking to stop the run and tackle the pass," he noted. "They did a nice job of tackling us after completions. They did the job on defense and we did the job on offense."

When discussing A. Pierro's performance, Saccoccia said he wants his senior quarterback to "use his ability."

"We want Anthony to know that we have confidence in him," Saccoccia added. "We want him to make plays; we don't want him to just manage the game. We want him to attack full speed, be aggressive and use his ability."

The senior quarterback received the performer of the game trophy from Rally in Death Valley organizers. He immediately said the trophy would go to the injured Meyer.

"The hit he had early in the game really set the tone for the day," Anthony Pierro said.

He also had some words of his praise for his offensive line.

"Our line is good," he said. "They will protect me until the day I die. We took what the Morgantown defense was giving us and we made the plays."

Musick, who entered the game with 698 yards, an average of 12 yards per trip and six touchdowns, would get just 51 yards against the Big Red defense. Watson hit on 5 of 10 passes for 59 yards. Big Red's starting defense would leave Reno field with its scoreless streak intact.

"That's been our main drive at practice to not allow a score," said Petteway, Big Red's outstanding linebacker. "We take pride in that and we work hard to achieve it."

During his post game remarks, Bowers said he believes his Mohigans will become a "better football team" thanks to Saturday's experience.

"If we want to be the best, we have to play the best," he said. "Big Red is the best team on our schedule. This game will get us ready for our stretch run. We're not going to see a team in West Virginia that is this good."

The Brooke High School product praises his team for "battling the whole game."

"We weren't scared," he said. "They were just a better football team. I thought we would hold up better inside and I thought we would tackle better. They just beat us up front. In the areas where we are good, they are good. In the areas where we are just OK, they are great."

Big Red will put its 5-0 mark on the line Friday when it hosts Wheeling Park and celebrates homecoming.
