JoePa with you on the Oregon St. and Oregon games. I think those are both easy money, and will be putting a substantial amount towards those games this weekend.

              Others I really like.

              USC -10

USC is a far superior team to Arizona St. and I think they come out ticked off after getting blown up by Oregon. Arizona St is going to catch the wrath for that one.

              Washington +4.5

Not sure why UCLA is even favored except that its at home. I will gladly take the points here. PAC 10 looks like it is offering winners.

              Duke +10

North Carolina, although they beat Virginia Tech is not impressive at all. They match up well with V Tech. Not so much Duke. Duke will be successful through the air and are better defensively than most think. North Carolina is poor on offense. Dukies may even pull the upset here.

              Houston Pk em

This is more an anti Tulsa pick than anything. I don't get all the love for Tulsa. They don't cover, Houston does almost every week. Its like bookmakers keep waiting for them to fail and they don't. Tulsa is not good enough offensively to take advantage of Houston.

              Wisconsin -10.5

Wisconsin is going to run the ball right down Indiana's throat. Maybe to the tune of 250+ yards. While Indiana is at home, and can put up some points on occasion, I see Wisconsin winning this game easily as Indiana just makes too many mistakes. I feel bad for Bill Lynch and his team getting jobbed by the refs last week, but have to think they know they find ways to lose, and that is tough to overcome.

surprised that if you see the value in taking PSU +3 you don't see the value in taking them -3......there really isn't a whole lot of difference honestly, especially in college football.......PSU wins this game by somewhere between 3 and 10 points IMHO.....

GL!...this week... (btw, what happened to shorts...:dunno:....he was around for a week or so and then it's like he got run over by a stroh's truck......)

And a little mid-week MAC teaser action:

EMUs have a bad record but not a horrible team by any stretch AND Miami,OH has been resurgent of late!

EMU blasted 63-27 at Arkansas last week. But this ain't the SEC and the Eagles lead the MAC and rank fourth in the nation in pass defense (146.0 ypg) and 22nd in the nation in time of possession (31:49). The Huskies rank 15th in the nation in rush offense (206.0 ypg) and 22nd in rush defense (105.4 ypg). NIU ranks second in the nation in red zone defense (63%) and 24th in the nation in scoring defense (18.1 ppg), but they barely got by a horrible Akron team last week......Will the Huskies be interested since they are 3-1 in the West and have Ball St., Ohio (4-1) and CMU (5-0) after the 0-4 EMUs.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how Temple plays as a top tier team versus playing as an also ran, while Miami continues to see great improvement every week . Miami QB Zac Dysert tossed for 344 yards last week vs. Toledo which ranks 10th on the school’s single-game passing yards list. The Redhawks also scored 24 points in the first half, the most in one half since Oct. of 2007. Temple’s Bernard Pierce is third in the nation in rushing (129.1 ypg) and tied for 23rd in scoring with 11 touchdowns for 66 points (8.3 ppg), while the Owls defense ranks 22nd in the nation in total defense (311.1 ypg). Much the same story as the EMU/NIU game. Miami,OH is 1-4 in MAC play and have a tough road ahead with finishes against BG and Buffalo, while Temple may be looking ahead to more formidable opponents in Kent and Ohio ahead......both trailing the the 4-0 Owls at 4-1 each in the MAC East.

Actually switched the OSU/PSU game over in the 3rd Quarter to watch the Middies pull a fast one on ND! PSU line and punt teams got schooled by the Buckeyes.....one for a TD and several for more than 30+ yards which set up short fields. Meanwhile Daryll Clark and the one dimensional passing game was exposed.

Middletown over the Men of M wasn't was big as Canton McKinley the 8th seed thrashing the number 1 seed Toledo Whitment 34 - 13! At least around these parts.

Steubenville has another tough date next week vs. Salem (8-2) who beat perennial power Granville on the Aces home field. And, Dover who rolled big now has a date with Vic Whiting's Canal Fulton Northwest. Northwest beat Buckeye Local one of the teams that beat Dover's first round opponent in the playoffs - Harrison Central - 28-7 while Dover opened that proverbial can on HC and led 42-0 at the half allowing -22 yards of total offense and +35 for the game and their starters never saw the field after an opening 3rd quarter drive.....NW is always good and well coached and this week to lead to the regional final matchups that the OHSAA really wants....Dover vs. Steubenville!

                          #13
                          Steubenville game story:

The Big Red of Steubenville High School ventured into the Ohio High School football playoffs for the 22nd time in their storied football history and for the 17th time they came away with an opening round victory. Big Red opened the 2009 playoffs with a 34-26 win over the Dukes of Alliance Marlington. Steubenville, who finished atop the Region 11 computer ratings, improves to 10-1 on the season while Marlington will close the books on 2009 with an 8-3 record.

Despite the closeness of the final score, Big Red was in command throughout the game as they raced out to a big first half advantage and held off a late Marlington surge to secure the win.

After holding the Dukes to a 3 and out to start the game, the Big Red took over at the 50 and used 9 plays to score first in the game on a 5 yard run by quarterback Dwight Macon. Anthony Pierro’s PAT made the score 7-0 with 7:06 to go in the first. Again Marlington could run only 3 plays before punting the ball back to Steubenville and again it took the Big Red 9 plays, covering 76 yards, to extend their lead. Fullback Leshawn Luke dove over from the 1 yard line to give Steubenville a 13-0 advantage with a minute left in the opening quarter.

Marlington, having no success on offense against the Big Red defense again punted the ball back to the Big Red after running just 4 plays and Steubenville started from their 37. The Big Red would continue mixing the run and pass as they took 11 plays and 5 ½ minutes to score on their 3rd straight possession with Macon again scoring on a 5 yard run. With 5:05 to go in the second quarter the Big Red was on top 20-0.

After trading possessions the Dukes offense showed their first sign of life as they were able to score with 1:54 before the half to close the gap to 20-6. Steubenville would take the ensuing kickoff and run 13 plays, getting deep into Marlington territory before an interception in the end zone on the last play of half halted the threat. Big Red had out gained the Dukes 261-59 in the first half controlling over 15 minutes of the clock.

Following a 35 yard kickoff return by Alvin Taylor, the Big Red started the second half at the Dukes 39. Nine plays later Luke would get his second touchdown of the night on a 2 yard, run moving Big Red’s lead to 27-7 early in the 3rd quarter. Marlington would answer the Big Red score with one of their own trimming the Big Red lead to 27-12.

The two teams would then trade punts and Steubenville would put the game away early in the last stanza when Dwight Macon hit a wide open Trey Wiggins on a 61 yard scoring strike culminating a 4 play 74 yard drive with just under 11 minutes to go in the final quarter to take a 34-12 lead. The Dukes would then score twice against the Big Red reserves closing the gap to 34-26 with just over a minute to play but their onside kick attempt failed and Steubenville was able to run out the clock and advance to week 2 of the playoffs.

The Big Red finished the game with 399 yards of total offense. The Big Red ran 75 plays compared to Marlington’s 37. Senior Quarterback Dwight Macon had one of his best games of the season completing 20 of 31 passes for 230 yards and a touchdown. Macon has now thrown for 1,218 yards for the season with 14 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions.

Team leading receiver Trey Wiggins had 5 catches for 123 yards and a score and Junior Anthony Pierro had 9 receptions for 61 yards. On the ground Sophomore Jo Jo Pierro led the attack as he accounted for 88 of Big Red’s 169 yards on the ground. Macon added 41 yards of rushing to go with his passing. The Big Red offense held the ball for over 29 minutes. Anthony Pierro made 4 of 5 PATs and punted twice in the game for a 46.0 yard average per punt.

It was a total team effort by the Big Red defense as held the Dukes in check until late in the game when they scored their 2 meaningless touchdowns. Leading the way was Sophomore Leshawn Luke who totaled 8 tackles in the game. Junior Linebacker and team leading tackler Shaq Petteway added 6 stops including 3 for losses while Senior Defensive end John Elder also had 6 tackles. Junior Jordan Meyer and Senior Jordan Banks each chipped in with 5 tackles. Seven of Marlington’s 37 plays went for negative yardage including Big Red’s 17th sack of the season. Four of Marlington’s 10 possessions ended in 3 and outs.

Steubenville will now move on to week 2 of playoffs as they will face the Salem Quakers in the regional Semi-Finals. Salem, who is making their first ever appearance in the Ohio post season advanced with a 38-31 overtime victory over Granville at Granville.

On the very first play from scrimmage, Dover linebacker Andrew Bache sliced through and slammed into Harrison Central running back Ben Palmer, stopping him for no gain. It was an attention getter and a tone setter.

Dover’s defense stymied the Harrison Central offense to just 49 total yards, while Marcus Mamarella fired three touchdown passes and Ricky Maz caught one of those aerials and also returned a punt for a touchdown as the Tornadoes blanked the Huskies 42-0 in a Division III regional quarterfinal football clash at Crater Stadium Friday night.

Dover, ranked No. 4 in the state and making its 13th playoff appearance in school history, improved to 10-1 on the season and will face Northwest next in the regional semifinals next Friday night at a site to be determined. The Indians (8-3) were 28-20 winners at Buckeye Local last night. It was the fourth straight season the Tornadoes had won a playoff opener. Meanwhile, Harrison Central, making its first foray in the playoffs in its school history, ended its season at 8-3.

Bache said he was just trying to make things happen.

“That’s how you have to do it,” said Bache of his tackle. “You have to come out flying. We had to be physical.”

But he wasn’t the only one.

“Chance (Shalosky) had an absolutely outstanding game,” added Bache. “That’s what we need from the younger guys.”

Dover coach Dan Ifft said Bache got the Tornadoes off and running.

“It started with Andrew Bache on the first play,” said Ifft. “Bache dropped him and from that point I really do believe they knew this was going to be a different type of football game. We have a physical bunch of kids and I think we imposed their will on the opponent tonight.”

Ifft was pleased with the way his team played in its playoff opener.

“I thought our kids played a very fine football game in all three facets of the game,” added Ifft. “It was a good way to get things started.”

Harrison Central coach Justin Kropka said the Dover defense was dominating.

“They stopped our run and a lot of things we do is based off the run,” said Kropka. “They were just bigger, faster and stronger up front and that’s where we’ve been best this year. They beat us at our own game and that’s why they’re No. 4 in the state.”

“We knew this would be a tall task,” added the Huskies’ coach. “We came out and tried to do what we do and they took it away. We tried to go to Plan B and they took that away. You have to give them all the credit. They played well.”

Kropka said that despite the loss it was a good learning experience for his program.

“I’m real proud of our kids,” said Kropka. “They came out and played hard. I feel for them because the way is hard to end, but the score will be forgotten. They will be remembered for being the first team to make it.”

Dover’s defense held Harrison Central to (minus) -13 yards at the intermission and 49 total for the game.

Palmer, who gained 1,400 yards rushing in just nine games, was held to 57 yards on 21 carries.
“They were definitely good,” said Palmer of the Dover defense. “They did a great job.”

Maz set up Dover’s first touchdown – a 3-yard run by Keith Johnson – with a 40-yard punt return to the Harrison Central 22. His second return, a 55-yarder, went for a touchdown as he ran behind a convoy of blockers.

“I had a great wall of blockers,” said Maz. “Defensively, the line did a really good job and so did the linebackers. As a safety, I could see there were no holes for him (Palmer) to run through.”
Ifft said Maz can do it all.

“Ricky Maz does a lot of fine things for our program and he’ll do whatever we need him to do,” said Ifft. “We had the two big returns, but Ricky did a lot of that himself. He made a couple of nice cuts on both runs.”

After’s Maz’s touchdown and second of six extra points by Zach Rafter made it 14-0 with 6:24 left in the first, the Tornadoes put the game away with a 28-point second quarter.

Mamarella, who was 11-of-19 for 132 yards, hit Colton Zahner with a 16-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter and followed that with a 31-yard scoring pass to Maz to help make it 28-0. Zahner caught nine balls for 86 yards and also had an interception on defense.

Mamarella also ran seven times for 50 yards.

After an interception by Dover’s Adam Moss, the Tornadoes moved the ball down field and the drive was capped by a 3-yard touchdown run by Brandyn Murtaugh.

During the drive, Mamarella took exception to a hard tackle by Harrison Central’s Jake Mallernee in which the Huskie pulled on Mamarella’s leg in the pile.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been that mad,” said Mamarella. “I wanted us to score really bad after that.”
“Marcus doesn’t get too upset very often, but when he does you know something’s wrong,” added Ifft. “It fired him up and he looked great after that.”

Dover had Harrison Central pinned deep in its own territory late in the quarter and Ifft utilized all three of his timeouts to get the ball back.

It paid off as Dover took over at the Harrison Central 35 and Mamarella hit Ian Drapcho with a 15-yard scoring pass with 1:33 left to put the Tornadoes on top 42-0.

There was no scoring in the second half as the Tornadoes used its reserves to wind out the clock.
