SOUTH FLORIDA QB out for the year

    Sunday, September 20, 2009

South Florida QB Grothe suffers torn ACL

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - South Florida starting quarterback Matt Grothe will be out the remainder of the season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The senior suffered the injury in Saturday's 59-0 win over Charleston Southern.

"Obviously, I am disappointed because you never think this could happen to you," said Grothe. "It's a team game and I am still going to be very involved with my teammates and the coaches. I am going to do everything I can to help the Bulls continue to win."

Grothe stepped in as the starting QB in 2006, his redshirt-freshman season. He is the Big East career leader in total offense with 10,875 yards. This season, he connected on 43-of-59 passes for 512 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions.

During his collegiate career, Grothe rushed for 2,206 yards and scored 23 touchdowns over 42 games. He passed for 8,669 yards and 52 touchdowns, both of which are the second best marks in school history.

Redshirt freshman B.J. Daniels is expected to start under center for the Bulls (3-0) when they play at Florida State Saturday. Evan Landi, another redshirt freshman, could also get some playing time.

WOW ...TO LOSE YOUR QB IN A 59-0 win over Charleston Sourthern really hurts ..

DANIELS IS FROM TALLAHASEE .. His first start will be in his hometown against the NOLES

Daniels only played in two games last year

Thanks for the post. I hadn't heard this yet. Im surprised it hasn't been broadcasted better in the media. South Florida has looked good early on.

    Thx!

This is just great.. Our redshirt will get his first start against FSU his hometown no less.. No pressure at all, I am betting many people are gonna suggest this game will eb a blowout, but im gonna think/hope that the margin of win is gonna be slim, I had seen him play before he is not bad at all, in fact I thought to myself he is gonna make a great replacement when Grothe is done with College, but this was not the time to loose Grothe. I unfortunately do not have high hopes, he has some enormous shoes to fill, ill keep my avatar up for another week or so to memorialize Grothe the best QB we had play for USF.

Cant confirm that but I am not worried with his athletic skills, im more concerned with his ability to handle pressure, this is a huge game for USF, tons of us are making the 4 hour drive up there to see this game, my outlook was bleak before, being realist here, I don't think we have a god chance of winning, but I was thinking we would at least stay in the game.. time will tell, I will be interested in what the spread is on the game. no matter what it is i am staying away from it.

speaking of injuries, two PSU linebackers may miss the game on saturday. Not sure which ones though lol I saw the head line in the paper, but didnt have time to read the whole section.

Daws, et.al......Mauti was hurt in the spring and is out for the season, Lee hurt is leg last week and is "doubtful" but I think they may get OLB Navarro Bowman back this week!

Michael Mauti LB Out For Season (knee)
Sean Lee LB Doubtful Week 4 (leg)
Navorro Bowman LB Probable Week 4 (ankle)

Here's the scoop right from JoePa:

                    Joe Paterno News Conference
                    Sept. 22, 2009

                    Full News Conference Transcript

I have a two part question. First, what are the chances of Sean Lee playing Saturday, and second, was Navorro Bowman restricted in any way during practice yesterday?

I really don't know whether Sean is going to make it or not on Saturday. That's a day-by-day thing. He tells us he's going to make it, but he's not the doctor. He's so determined to play, but I really don't know. He was out on the field yesterday. He didn't do anything. When I say on the field, he was out there urging some kids on and things like that. So, I don't know.

And was the other kid Navorro? Again, Navorro was out there, practiced yesterday for about a third of the practice. I'm anxious to see how he feels today to see whether that thing got sore or not and whether he can go a little bit more today. But you don't want to stick him in there where he's going to he's not really 100 percent, because that's such a tough position and so many people come at you all the time when you're the linebacker, I'd hate to have him get an injury because he can't move as well as he should.

So I don't really know if we're going to have either one of them. Obviously, when you prepare for a game, you've got to say, "hey, they're not going to be here" and you've got to get somebody else ready. But you keep your fingers crossed that maybe you're going to have one or both of them.

Matt Grothe is still at USF? Good Lord, he must be about 32 by now. It seems like he's been their starting QB since they entered DIV I-A, or FBS or whatever they call it now.
