In the midst of the nation’s longest winning streak and ranked No. 2 in the BCS standings, the
No. 2/2/3 University of South Florida football team (6-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) takes its first BIG EAST
road trip to Rutgers (4-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) for Thursday night’s national TV game on ESPN at 7:30 p.m. USF is coming off a 64-12 win over a UCF in Tampa, while Rutgers defeated Syracuse 38-14.


The Coaches
USF: Jim Leavitt (Missouri ‘78) has a career record of 76-43 (.639) and is in his 11th season at USF. He has coached every game in the program’s history. He is 4-0 when ranked, 14-9 vs. BIG EAST, 54-29 in night games, 21-29 on the road, 45-37 on television and 0-3 on ESPN.
Rutgers: Greg Schiano entered 2007 with a 32-43 record in six years at Rutgers

The USF program has an all-time record of 49-26 at the NCAA FBS level and a 76-43 overall record. The wining percentage of 63.9 is good enough to rank USF No. 14 among FBS schools in all-time winning percentage. USF became the fastest team in the modern era of college football to go from upstart NCAA FBS school to a top-10 ranking on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Bulls have won eight straight, which is tied for the longest active streak at the NCAA FBS level along with Boston College and Hawaii.

Thorpe Award Candidate Trae Williams will play a huge role for the Bulls as they attempt to slow down the balanced Rutgers attack. Williams has nine interceptions in the last two seasons, which is 2nd best total by NCAA FBS players in the last two years. He also has 17 pass breakups, including 8 this year during that time. Expect Williams to match up with either Tiquan Underwood or Kenny Britt, both of who have 600-plus yards this season.

During USF’s current eight-game win streak no team has scored more than 23 points against the stout Bulls defense. In fact, only Auburn & FAU - both with 23 points - have scored more than 19 against the Bulls

USF debuted at No. 2 in the initial Bowl Championship Series standings released on Sunday afternoon.

It is the first ever BCS ranking in a season of firsts for the Bulls, but more importantly it places USF as a major player in the national championship picture. The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the BCS standings at the end of the regular season will play in the BCS National Championship Game on Jan. 7, 2008 in New Orleans, La.


No current member of the Big East has ever been ranked as high as No. 2 while a member of the Big East. The next-highest ranking before Sunday was No. 3, attained by West Virginia and Louisville last season and by West Virginia in 1993. Pittsburgh and Syracuse held the No. 1 ranking before the Big East started playing football in 1991, but neither team has done so since 1982.

USF has not allowed a player to rush for over 100 yards since Rutgers’ Ray Rice went for 202 at Raymond James last season ... That is a span of 14 games ... Only six players have rushed for over 100 yards against the Bulls defense since the start of 2005 .... The USF defense, in addition to creating 21 turnovers this season, has had some success shutting down the top offensive weapons on opposing teams this season. USF’s defense held West Virginia Heisman candidates Steve Slaton (54 yards), Pat White (36 yards) and UCF’s Kevin Smith (55 yards), who led the country in rushing yards per game - to a combined 145 yards rushing this season. That is less than Smith averaged – 172 yards - entering the game against USF.

Fast Starts
USF has scored first in all six games this season. The Bulls have received the ball first three times and scored 44 points in the first quarter of the last five games (14 vs. UNC & Auburn, 7 vs. WVU, 7 vs. FAU, 12 v.s UCF).

USF’s defense is led by a bunch of playmakers, which are producing turnovers at a record pace ... The USF record for forced turnovers is 35 set in 2002 .... USF has already forced 21 in six games and is on pace for 42 this season ... The Bull “D” ranks fourth nationally in turnovers gained, 14th in fumbles recovered (9) and ninth in interceptions (12) ... Nate Allen and Ben Moffitt both already have three interceptions, CB Trae Williams has a pair of picks, as does Mike Jenkins ... Moffitt, a four-year starter, did not have any picks prior to this season ... Allen also has two fumble recoveries and has a pick in three of four games ... The defensive line has accounted for 19 of the team’s 20 sacks and 41.5 of the 71 tackles for loss ... USF is No. 1 nationally in TFL with an average of 11.3 per game.

USF’s defense has forced three or more turnovers four times this season. They have averaged more forced turnovers (4.5) against major conference teams - West Virginia, UNC, Auburn & UCF - than against FCS teams (1.5) Elon and Sun Belt member FAU.

Secondary to None
USF’s secondary has proven early that it may be one of the best in America ... Currently, the Bulls are No. 5 in pass efficiency defense (88. 84) ... USF is also ranked No. 15 in pass defense at 178 yards per game, but that does not tell the whole story ... The secondary has eight interceptions, five fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles ... Prior to West Virginia, the Bulls had only allowed 250 passing yards combined to Auburn and North Carolina ... Carolina was averaging 300-plus yards passing before USF held them to 85 and intercepted four passes on Sept. 22 ... USF has held two teams below 100 yards passing ... UNC had 85 yards and UCF had 84 yards ... Sophomore FS Nate Allen has three INT, while Trae Williams and Mike Jenkins both have two ... SS Carlton Williams has 3.5 TFL, one sack and 33 tackles this season ... The secondary as a whole already has 25 pass breakups, led by T. Williams and Jenkins with eight apiece.

USF returned 16 starters this season and has quickly risen to national recognition despite being essentially a young team. The Bulls are receiving award worthy play from their sophomore class. At the top of that list are second year stars Matt Grothe, George Selvie and Nate Allen.

Selvie’s leading the country in sacks (11.5) and tackles for loss (21.5) in six games this season. He was named Walter Camp National Player of the Week (9/23) for his 3 sacks and 5 TFLs against North Carolina. He is a Lombardi and Bednarik candidate.

Grothe’s numbers and recognition as the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year set the ground work for acclaim. Grothe is leading the team in rushing 346, while also passing for 1,121 yards and seven TD to 3 INT.

Nate Allen is putting himself all over the stat sheet with 3 INT, 35 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries and 1 tackle for loss. Allen was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week (9/10) and Nagurski National Player of the Week (9/11) after playing a part in three turnovers against Auburn.

USF has 15 underclassmen among its current projected starters on offense and defense.

True-freshman Mike Ford is third on the USF team in rushing yards with 251 (50.2 per game) ... He leads the team with five rushing TD and one TD reception

Eight straight victories ties USF with Boston College and Hawaii for the longest current winning streak at the FBS level. The Bulls have played just one Big East game this season, a 21-13 triumph over nationally-ranked West Virginia back on September 28th.

Rutgers though, has had some trouble living up to last season's success, as it has already suffered two losses. Still, the team has won twice as many games as it has lost, and that includes a 38-14 triumph over Syracuse this past weekend. The win put an end to a two-game slide and improved Rutgers to 1-1 in Big East play.

The Knights and Bulls have split two prior meetings, with each club winning on the road. USF posted a 45-31 victory in Piscataway in 2005, while Rutgers returned the favor with a 22-20 win in Tampa last season.

The Bulls rolled up 543 yards of total offense, including 178 on the ground, as they scored a season-high 64 points in a route of UCF this past weekend. As has been the case all season long, quarterback Matt Grothe led the charge, rushing for 100 yards and two scores, and passing for 212 yards and two more touchdowns. Grothe, a tremendous competitor and leader, has simply done it all for this USF club, as he leads the team with 346 rushing yards and 1,121 passing. He has accounted for 11 total touchdowns (four rushing) and he is the primary reason why this offense is turning in a solid 35.3 ppg and 393.5 total ypg. Benjamin Williams and Mike Ford are two other players that could have an impact in this game, as the tailbacks have played a big part in the team's rushing averaging of 180.5 ypg. Williams has run for 309 yards and five scores, while Ford has gained 251 yards with five touchdowns as well.

While the offense has been productive this season, it is USF's defense that has really put this program on the map. The unit has been successful against some premier offenses and it comes into the game allowing just 15.7 ppg and only 284.3 total ypg. The Bulls have faced some of the top rushers in the nation along way and they have done a tremendous job in limiting their foes to just 2.9 yards per carry. Generating big plays is nothing new for this defense either, as USF has recorded 20 sacks and forced 21 turnovers.

In just six games, Selvie has already set the school record for both TFLs (21.5) and sacks (11.5). He leads the nation in both categories as well. Another player worth mentioning is Ben Moffitt, who is one of the leaders of this defense and the team's top tackler with 52 to his credit. He also has eight TFLs and three interceptions on his resume.

The Knights are one of the better offensive teams in the Big East, as they are racking up 37.2 ppg and 489.7 total ypg on the season. The team relies a lot on its ground game, which is averaging 182.2 ypg behind the steady play of Ray Rice. One of the top backs in the country, Rice currently leads the Big East with 818 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns.

Teel, usually overshadowed by Rice, has had a rather good year, as he has completed 62.5 percent of his throws for an average of 302.8 passing ypg. He has thrown 12 touchdowns against six interceptions. His main target is Tiquan Underwood, who leads the club with 34 catches and 675 receiving yards. Underwood got off to a fast start this season, but since teams have begun to focus on him a bit more, Teel has looked the way of Kenny Britt. Last weekend, Britt pulled down seven balls for 176 yards and a score, while Underwood finished with just two catches for 14 yards. For the year, Britt is hot on the heels of Underwood with 27 catches and 640 receiving yards. Both players have recorded four touchdown this season.

The Knights rank as one of the top defensive units in the Big East, as they are giving up just 17.2 ppg and only 296.8 total ypg. The unit has really flourished against the pass, holding opponents to just 157.7 ypg through the air while recording 16 sacks.

On the year, Malast is tops on the club with 48 tackles and Westerman is first with 7.0 TFLs and four sacks

FORT WORTH--TCU will look to continue the momentum from its 38-36 win at Stanford when it hosts Utah Thursday for a 7 p.m. televised game on Versus. With their victory over the Cardinal, the Horned Frogs improved to 10-2 in their last 12 games against teams from leagues with automatic BCS bids.

For the third consecutive season, the Frogs and Utes are meeting on a Thursday. That represents every game in their Mountain West Conference series history.

The last game in Fort Worth, in 2005, between the teams marked the Frogs' first-ever MWC?contest. A 23-20 TCU overtime victory snapped Utah's 18-game winning streak.

The Frogs are 5-2 in short-week games under Gary Patterson as head coach.

Over the last three seasons, TCU is 1-3 in Thursday games and 25-3 on other days of the week. The Frogs' two losses in Thursday contests last season, the only defeats in an 11-2 season, did not come on short weeks.

Following this game, TCU will have a 16-day break from action before a Nov. 3 home date versus New Mexico.

THE SERIES
Utah holds a 3-1 lead over TCU in a series that began in 1996.

The first two games between the Frogs and Utes took place when both teams were members of the Western Athletic Conference. Utah won 21-7 in Salt Lake City in 1996 and 32-18 in Fort Worth in 1997.

The Frogs and Utes have split their Mountain West Conference meetings. TCU won 23-20 in overtime in Fort Worth in 2005, while Utah took a 20-7 decision last season.

TCU is 1-1 versus the Utes in Fort Worth and 0-2 in Salt Lake City.

DEFENDING THEIR HOME
Since 2000, TCU is 37-5 in home games at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

The Frogs' 23-4 (.852)?home record since 2003 ranks 12th-best in the nation.

TCU has recorded two shutouts in its past five home dates.

In their last six home contests, the Frogs have outscored their opponents 188-36.

Dating back to the 2005 campaign, the Frogs have held the opposition without a touchdown in six of their last 11 home games.

KEY NOTES
With Gary Patterson as head coach, TCU is 38-0 when allowing 17 points or less. Overall, the Frogs have won 53 consecutive games when holding the opponent to 17-or-fewer points. The streak began after a 17-7 loss at Northwestern on Sept. 11, 1999.

In the first half of its last 15 contests, TCU?has outscored its opponents 287-54. The margin is 95-41, including 75-17 in the second quarter, in 2007.

The Frogs have allowed only nine touchdowns through the opening three quarters of their seven games this season. TCU has surrendered just five first-half touchdowns.


While Utah has won its last three games, the only one against a conference opponent was 23-7 last week over San Diego State when the Utes had 517 total yards.

Their winning streak coincides with the return of quarterback Brian Johnson from a separated shoulder sustained in the season opener after he missed all of 2006 following knee surgery, and 100-yard rushing games from Darrell Mack. Before that, Utah was shut out for the first time in 14 years by UNLV.


The Horned Frogs have won three of their last four games, rallying to win 38-36 last week at Stanford, which was coming off its upset of Southern Cal.

But that doesn't mean all the problems have been solved for the Frogs, whose recent winning span included SMU (1-5) and Colorado State (0-6). Their much-heralded defense, without standout defensive end Tommy Blake for most of the season and again Thursday night, has allowed 60 points and 402 yards rushing the past two games.

At least the Frogs can look forward to a break, with their next game after Utah coming 16 days later when they play at home against New Mexico.

Utah and TCU have already lost to Air Force (5-2, 4-1) and have November games at BYU (4-2, 3-0) -- the only MWC team with even a remote chance of slipping into a BCS bowl.



When it comes to having an up and down season, no other team may mirror Utah quite like TCU. This Thursday, when the two meet, they will enter the game with identical records and the chance to really make something of their season. A loss will eliminate either from conference contention, while a victory could position them for a late season run.

Utah lost Brian Johnson in its first game of the season, while TCU's Tommy Blake left the team because of an undisclosed illness and still hasn't returned. That absence has hurt the Frogs, as they limped out to a 3-3 record before Saturday night's victory over Stanford. Like Utah, TCU seems to have gotten their act together at just the right moment, staging what could be a wild finish in the Mountain West race.

Of course, like Utah, they haven't been able to sustain any type of success. TCU opened the season with a fairly impressive defensive win over Baylor, before melting down in the second half against Texas. They followed up that loss with a shocking defeat at Air Force, rebounded for victories against SMU and Colorado State, only to lose to Wyoming the next week. That leads TCU into Thursday's game looking for any traction. That sounds familiar, as Utah has pretty much seen similar results.

This game means a lot for both teams and could be the difference maker for either of their seasons. A Utah victory will most likely set up a run that could position the Utes for a chance at the MWC crown when they play BYU in November. A loss will probably doom them to a record of no better than 7-5. Likewise, TCU could use this win as a launching point to another 10-win campaign under Gary Patterson. A loss, however, most likely means no better than a 7-5 finish for the Frogs.

GAME NOTES: The Utah Utes take aim at their fourth straight victory and the fifth in the last six outings as they head to the gridiron in Fort Worth on Thursday night for a Mountain West Conference battle against the TCU Horned Frogs. Utah, which began the season with back-to-back losses and setbacks in three of the first four games, has since climbed above .500 thanks to a 23-7 triumph against San Diego State at home last Saturday. While the team is 4-3 overall in 2007, it has just one win in three tries versus the rest of the MWC, which is where a heavily favored TCU program stands at the moment as well. Expected to contend for the regular season title in the conference yet again, the Horned Frogs have beaten only Colorado State in league action thus far. However, TCU did pull out a thrilling 38-36 triumph over Stanford on the road last Saturday, giving the squad three wins in the last four games and 10 victories in the last 12 opportunities versus programs from the BCS conferences. Utah has won three of the previous four meetings with the Horned Frogs, the lone setback coming in overtime in 2005. Last season, the Utes kept TCU from running the table in the MWC with a 20-7 decision in early October in Salt Lake City

Earning himself MWC Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Monday, Louie Sakoda played huge in the Utah win over SDSU on Saturday afternoon, knocking through three field goals and connected on both of his PATs in the 16-point triumph. Offensively, Utah leaned on Darrell Mack once again as the running back rolled up 131 yards on 22 carries and the team posted 282 yards on 46 attempts. In taking some pressure off the quarterback, the running attack allowed Brian Johnson to settle into the pocket and convert 22-of-29 for 220 yards and a score. With no one else on the team having gained even 100 yards over the first seen games for the Utes, the main attraction coming out of the backfield is definitely Mack who has burst onto the scene like a runaway truck, putting up 647 yards and five touchdowns, while averaging better than five yards per carry. Mack also has 16 receptions for another 112 yards and a team- best three scores through the air. Johnson may have only five TDs, against three picks, but his nearly 70 percent accuracy still makes him a threat with every snap.


Because of the strong push up front the Utes have been able to get their secondary to perform at a higher level as well, with the squad allowing opponents just 196.3 ypg through the air to rank third in the MWC and 29th in the nation following play on Saturday. Holding UCLA and SDSU to a combined 13 points has also done wonders for the team's scoring defense, which now stands at 19.6 ppg allowed (fourth in the MWC, 26th nationally). Martail Burnett may not make a lot of plays for the Utes, but when he does they are generally important, as evidenced by his team-high 4.5 sacks on just 23 tackles.

Late in the third quarter the Horned Frogs found themselves trailing by two touchdowns against Stanford, but that only served to awaken a sleeping giant that went on to steal a two-point win in California. Aaron Brown did a little bit of everything for the squad with a team-high 91 yards rushing, leading to one score, and another five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Having one of his finest outings, Andy Dalton made good on 23-of-34 passing for 344 yards and a pair of scores and went without an interception. Now with a pair of 300-yard passing games to his credit, Dalton is slowly building a decent passing attack for the Horned Frogs, even though they are still ranked just fifth in the conference and 61st in the country with 227.4 ypg. Considering the team ranks last in the conference and 114th in the nation this week in kickoff returns (17.9 yards per attempt), with so much of the field to deal with Dalton should only be getting better.

Following their upset win of nationally-ranked USC a week earlier, the Cardinal were due for a let down, but the home team still probably thought it had a win in the bag against TCU nonetheless. Stanford was allowed to control the ball for almost 33 minutes and converted on fourth down three times, but when the Horned Frogs defense needed to show up it certainly did. David Hawthorne tallied a team-high 10 tackles, all of them solo, and had one of the unit's five sacks, with two others being attributed to Chase Ortiz. As well as the defense played at times, missing Tommy Blake who is out indefinitely, is still hurting the group. Trying to carry some of the load left by the Blake void are Hawthorne who is first on the team with 52 tackles and second with three sacks, while Ortiz has 10.5 TFLs and five sacks in his travels. As a team TCU is first in the MWC in both sacks (2.7 per game) and TFLs (7.9), which have in turn ranked the group 27th and 18th in the nation, respectively, this week. The unit's pass defense efficiency rating is also tops in the Mountain West and 13th in the country at 101.02 after seven games.
