HEADS UP FOR THE KENT/MIAMI,OH GAME:

KSU's Justin Greene likely to play tonight against RedHawks

Everything is tracking toward Justin Greene’s return to the lineup for Kent State’s game at Miami University tonight. The KSU senior and defending MAC Player of the Year missed Saturday’s BracketBuster loss to the College of Charleston because of a sprained ankle.

“It was tough sitting out,” the 6-foot-8 senior said prior to boarding the bus to Oxford on Monday. “I was just telling someone last night (the Charleston loss) was like watching someone beat up on your little brother when you’re not around. It was definitely motivational because I wasn’t sure about Tuesday then, but I’m definitely sure about (playing against Miami) now.

“I’ve just been doing what I can to get ready for this next game. I should be fine now and hopefully ready to go and get back out there to help the team.”

Greene had never missed a game to injury in his entire Kent State career. He also never missed a game with an injury at Lincoln High School in New York.

“The ankle is still swollen, but he is able to move around. We’ll play him as much as he can play,” said KSU head coach Rob Senderoff.

KSU Men's Basketball Team Closes in on MAC Tournament Bye
            By David Carducci

A win tonight for the Kent State men’s basketball team at Miami and the Golden Flashes will move one step closer to securing either a bye or double-bye in the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament.

The key game for the Flashes, however, is Saturday at Bowling Green. Beating the Falcons would guarantee at least a bye to the quarterfinals.

The four byes go to the teams with the four best records in the conference. The top two teams get a double-bye to the semis.

Bowling Green is currently in fifth place in both the East Division and the overall conference standings with a 7-5 conference record. A KSU win on Saturday would put the Flashes (19-7, 9-3) at least two games ahead of the Falcons with two games to play, and with a 2-0 record against BGSU, they would also own the tiebreaker.

“We have two weeks left in the regular season, so this one is obviously big and so is the next one,” said Senderoff. “If we win two of the last four, we’ll assure ourselves a bye, and that’s goal No. 1 for us. Goal No. 2 is to get a double-bye.”

            SCOUTING MIAMI

The RedHawks (8-17, 4-8) are heading for a last-place finish in the East Division — something that hasn’t happened in Oxford since the 1999-2000 season when Miami suffered through an 8-10 MAC season (15-15 overall).

Charlie Coles’ team can still be dangerous, though, according to Senderoff.

“It’s always tough to play down there,” said Senderoff. “Obviously they are not having as a good a season as they had last year, and a lot of that is due to injuries. But they are still no pushover. They lead the league in 3-pointers made. They have one of the candidates for Freshman of the Year in the MAC in Brian Sullivan. And they have one of the best all-around players in the league in Julian Mavunga, who is a returning All-Conference player.”

The 6-foot-8 Mavunga is averaging 16.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game this season, but those numbers are down a bit (14.3 points, 8.5 rebounds) since the start of MAC play. Sullivan is second on the team at 10.7 points per game as the RedHawks’ point guard, but he’s upped his average to 13.0 against MAC opponents.

Miami held a 13-point lead in the first half at KSU earlier this season before the Flashes orchestrated a comeback that eventually resulted in a 71-67 win for the Flashes.

            JUST ONE MORE

KSU gets another shot at claiming its 20th win of the season tonight.

That would be significant for several reasons. For one, it would mark the 13th 20-plus-win season for the Flashes in the last 14 years.

Getting to 20 wins would also trigger an automatic one-year extension of Senderoff’s contract.

A win would also notch KSU’s 10th conference win of the year. KSU has won 10 or more conference games for 13 consecutive years. The only other teams in the country with 13 consecutive seasons of 10-plus conference games are Kansas, Gonzaga and Creighton.

            SCHEDULING 2012-13

Next season’s men’s basketball schedule is already starting to take shape for Kent State.

The Flashes know they will open the season at home against Drexel. The home slate will also include a game against Temple. KSU has signed on for an exempt tournament that will include a game at Nebraska, along with three home games. One of those games at the M.A.C. Center will be Valparaiso.

The road schedule will include a game at Cleveland State as well as the renewal of KSU’s regional rivalry with Youngstown State.
