    Injuries giving ’Hawks uphill climb
    By Pete Conrad, Staff Writer
    11:03 PM Monday, January 31, 2011

OXFORD — Miami University’s basketball season has taken a drastic downward turn and the RedHawks are determined not to lose heart.

“Everybody has to step up, plain and simple,” junior forward Julian Mavunga said.

“The season’s not over,” coach Charlie Coles said. “We’ve played seven games in the league, we’re 4-3.”

It’s a decent-enough record in the Mid-American Conference, but not good enough to keep the RedHawks from falling out of first place for the first time this season following a disheartening loss to Western Michigan on Saturday.

The RedHawks, who led WMU by 15 points in the second half, now must face the first-place team from the West Division, Ball State, tonight at Millett Hall.

They’ll do it without two of their usual starters, something the RedHawks will have to get used to. Senior forward Antonio Ballard is out for the season with a broken wrist and freshman point guard Quinten Rollins is out until at least late February with an injured wrist.

“I don’t know if we can win the league without Ballard,” Coles said. “He was our best player.”

In games played since the start of the MAC season, Ballard is among the league leaders in scoring, rebounding, field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage.

“But here’s what we can do,” Coles said. “We can win the (MAC) tournament without him. We can win some games without him.

“Hey, we can do this,” he said.

A victory over Ball State would help, and the Cardinals have shown some vulnerability. They have lost three straight, including league losses to Kent State and Ohio.

Ball State still leads the MAC in team scoring defense, field-goal percentage defense and 3-point defense.

“Ball State is the best team in the West,” Mavunga said. “It’s important to keep our heads up. We know (the loss to Western Michigan) was a bad performance. We have to bounce back.”

      Miami suffers losses in victory
Ballard leaves with injury, but RedHawks grab 68-58 road win; Rollins also hurt.
      Staff Report
      Updated 7:27 AM Friday, January 28, 2011

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — A second-half surge lifted Miami University’s basketball team to a 68-58 victory over Central Michigan at McGuirk Arena on Thursday night, but it came with a heavy cost.

Antonio Ballard injured his left wrist in the closing seconds and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Miami coach Charlie Coles said he doesn’t know the extent of the injury, but said he expects his 6-foot-4 senior forward to be out of action for a while.

“It’s a bad thing,” Coles said. “He’s in more pain than is normally good.”

Ballard was about to put an exclamation point on Miami’s victory with a slam dunk with 26.5 seconds remaining when he was hit hard by CMU junior forward Andre Coimbra, who was called for a flagrant foul.

It was a sobering end to what had been a strong second half for the RedHawks, who improved to 9-11 overall and remained tied for first place in the Mid-American Conference East Division at 4-2.

“It was a great victory. I thought we played our best offensive half of the season,” said Coles, whose team shot 73.7 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes.

Miami trailed 37-30 early in the half, but a driving shot by Nick Winbush sparked a rally which saw the RedHawks outscore the Chippewas 14-4 over the final 5:40.

“Nick Winbush was out of this world, Antonio Ballard was great, and Allen Roberts played really well,” Coles said.

Ballard recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Winbush scored 20 points with nine rebounds, and both went 8-of-11 from the field.

Roberts finished with eight points off the bench.

Jalin Thomas led all scorers with 23 points and knocked down 7-of-13 shots from 3-point range for CMU (5-14, 2-4 MAC), but he didn’t score a point over the final 15 minutes.

“Nick clamped down on him,” Coles said of Winbush.

Miami suffered two left-wrist injuries on Thursday. Freshman point guard Quinten Rollins, who missed Sunday’s game at Kent State with an injured foot, was expected to start but hurt his left wrist during a shootaround and did not play.
