Eastern Michigan Tops Zips 62-59

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron men's basketball team rallied from being behind twice in the second half, but could not ward off a late surge from Eastern Michigan as the Eagles escaped Rhodes Arena with a 62-59 victory on Monday in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional match up.
Jay Higgins hit a 3-pointer to put Eastern Michigan (11-10, 3-5) up 57-55 with just under 2 minutes left and the Eagles led the rest of the way. Higgins also made a late free throw, sandwiched between a layup and a pair of foul shots from Carlos Medlock, in the final minute to seal the deal.
Jimmy Conyers and Steve McNees had a layup apiece in the final 22 seconds for Akron (15-7, 5-3), but it was the first time the Zips had scored since taking a 55-54 lead thanks to a pair of free throws from Brett McKnight with just over 4 minutes remaining.
Higgins led all players with 17 points, while Antonio Green scored 14 points, and Justin Dobbins and Medlock added 12 apiece for the Eagles.
Brett McKnight led Akron as its lone double-digit scorer, finishing with 13 points, eight of which came from the foul line in the second half, and also had four rebounds. Jimmy Conyers added nine points, a team-high six rebounds and career-high-tying four steals for the Zips, while Steve McNees had a career-high-tying six assists, scored four points and grabbed four boards to round out the player highlights for the blue and gold.
After shooting 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from the field in the first half and holding a 32-31 edge at the break, Akron went 8-for-28 (28.6 percent) from the floor in the second period to finish at 34.7 percent (17-of-49) for the night.
Conversely, Eastern Michigan (11-10, 3-5 MAC) saw an improvement in second-half shooting, connecting on 50 percent (10-0f-20) from the field after halftime, after making 39.1 percent (9-of-23) in the opening stanza. The Eagles closed the night at 44.2 percent (19-of-43). Akron held a slight margin in rebounding, 31-28, in a game that featured 12 ties and 14 lead changes.
Akron wraps up a three-game five-day homestand on Wednesday (Feb. 3) when it plays host to Northern Illinois. Tip off is set for 7 p.m. ET.
