I'll take that loss with my UB bet.......UB was the leagues leading scoring team just over 75ppg, and Rodney Pierce the league's best scorer who lit crAcKRON up for 31 on the weekend and he short rimmed and/or air balled at least 5 shots in the first half and only scored 4 points. He didn't score in the second half and was taken out of the game with 12 mins. left and never came back in. Might have been under the weather, who knows, but someone awoke a sleeping giant last night.

Kent's starting lineup comprised only two starters and they jumped right on Buffalo! Flashes made 7-10 3s in the second half, after going 0-7 in the first half.

Sizzling Second Half Sends Kent State To 89-54 Win Over Buffalo
Golden Flashes shot 74.1 percent in the second half

                        Release: 01/20/2010

KENT, Ohio – Kent State (11-7; 2-2) ended a two-game losing skid in emphatic fashion, downing Mid-American conference East Division leading Buffalo (10-5; 3-1), 89-54 Wednesday night at the M.A.C. Center. The Golden Flashes went on an offensive tear in the second half, firing 74.1% from the field and knocking down 10-of-14 three-point attempts (71.4%) after misfiring on all seven of their tries in the first half.

Senior guard Chris Singletary (Chicago, Ill. / Florida Prep) and his 18 points led an attack which featured six players in double figures. It marked the first time KSU has received double-digit performances from a half-dozen players in one game since facing Shawnee State in 2008. In addition to Singletary, Rodriquez Sherman (Indianapolis, Ind. / Ben Davis) (13) Anthony Simpson (Rockford, Ill./Highland C.C.[Ill.]) (11), Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va. / Motlow C.C. [Tenn.]) (11), freshman Randal Holt (Bedford, Ohio / Glenville) (11) and Justin Greene (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Lincoln) (10) reached double figures.

“We came to play Kent State basketball,” said Evans who hit three second half threes. “We played like a team and a family.”

Despite the gaudy offensive numbers, it was the job KSU’s defense did on Buffalo’s leading scorer Rodney Pierce (19.8 ppg) that was key in the triumph. Riding a streak of eight straight 20-point outings, the Golden Flashes stifled the senior, holding him to a 1-of-8 performance and a total of four points.

“We were ready to play at a high level and really challenged them,” said Head Coach Geno Ford. “Yesterday’s practice was really competitive and fiery and I thought today’s shoot-around was competitive. Our backs were against the wall and the older guys did a good job of setting the tone for us.”

Ford’s decision to rearrange his starting lineup apparently lit a fire under his troops as 57 of Kent State’s points came from the bench. The Golden Flashes took advantage of the Bulls’ miscues by scoring 40 points off turnovers and won the battle in the paint with 40-24 scoring edge.

Kent State led for most of the first half and used an 8-0 run over the final three minutes to take a 34-24 lead at the intermission. The team then proceeded to open the second stanza by converting 10 of its first 11 shots, including four three-pointers, to build a 25-point advantage just nine minutes into the half. The lead was extended to as many as 39 (86-47) before all was said and done.

Max Boudreau led the Bulls with 15 points. Buffalo, which entered the game averaging a MAC best 73.6 points per game, shot just 32.7 percent (17-52) and 18.2 percent (4-22) from three.

The Golden Flashes wrap-up the three-game home stand against rival Akron on Saturday (Jan. 23). Game time is set for a 12:00 pm ESPNU broadcast.

                        NOTES:
