Not a huge win by the looks of the score, but Kent turned up the D in the second half, led by 20 at one point and coasted....Singletary was a beast last night and Tyree Evans in his first game showed he's a player....

Second Half ‘D’ Leads Kent State To 73-62 Win Over UNC Greensboro
Singletary just misses a triple double with 10 points, 10 assists and eight steals

        Release: 12/18/2008

KENT, Ohio —For the second straight game the Kent State men’s basketball team used a stout defensive effort at the start of the second half to cruise to a win. Tonight the Golden Flashes used a 19-3 run in the first six minutes of the second half to gain control in a 73-62 win over UNC Greensboro at the M.A.C. Center.

Kent State improved to 5-5 with its second straight win after forcing five turnovers during the six minute run that turned a 32-29 half time deficit into a 48-35 lead. Junior guard Chris Singletary (Chicago, Ill./Florida Prep.) was the spark plug defensively with two of his eight steals during the KSU run. Singletary equaled a school record with his eight steals and just missed what would have been the first triple-double in program history by adding 10 points and a career high 10 assists.

“Coming out at halftime we were down so I thought we needed a spark, said Singletary, “Being one of the returning veterans I thought it was my duty to give us that spark. Coach ran some plays that got me the ball in great position and I was able to make some plays.”

The Golden Flashes which led by as much as 20 in the second half also received a game high 21 points off the bench from junior Tyree Evans (Richmond, Va. / Motlow C.C. (Tenn.)). Playing in his first game for KSU, Evans tallied seven of his 18 second half points during the game changing run. For the game he was 7-11 from the field and canned 5-8 from beyond the arc while adding three assists. Junior Brandon Parks (Bunker Hill, Pa. / Maconaquah H.S.) chipped in 17 points while junior Anthony Simpson (Rockford, Ill. / Highland C.C. (Ill.)) grabbed a career best 11 rebounds.

With 11 points senior guard Al Fisher (Pennsauken, N.J. / Redlands (Okla.)) rounded out four players in double figures for the Golden Flashes which shot 29-56 (51.8) percent from the field and equaled a season best with 19 assists.

“They play a lot of match up zones and they’re hard to get into a rhythm against because they change defenses so much,” said Head Coach Geno Ford, “But Chris had 10 assists and we shot 52% from the field and 40% from three so we had good offensive numbers in spite of not having great rhythm or flow.”

UNC Greensboro (1-7) built a 32-29 halftime lead on hot three-point shooting. With KSU up 27-23, UNCG scored nine of the last 11 points of the half for the three-point lead going into intermission. Ethan Boone jump-started the run with a jumper while Kendal Tony, who finished with a team high 14 points, hit a three to give the Spartans a 30-27 edge, their first of the game. Both teams traded baskets in the final minute.

After the surge to start the second half by KSU, the Spartans cut the lead back to eight with 10 minutes remaining, but the Golden Flashes quickly answered with a 12-0 run to claim a 20 point lead before all was said and done. The Spartans answered with a 13-0 run of thier own to close the gap to seven (64-57) with three minutes left before KSU put the game away .

Kent State travels to Cleveland State on Dec. 23.

NOTES: Chris Singletary equaled a school record with eight steals (Mike Klinzing vs Bowling Green 1/16/91) ... Singletary recorded his 100th career steal and now has 107 in 69 career games ... The 10 assists are the most by a KSU player since Al Fisher had 10 against Cleveland State (12/29/07) last season ... Singletary has now had double digits in 12 straight games ... Tyree Evans’ five threes are the most by a KSU player this season and the most since Mike McKee had five at Eastern Michigan (1/30/08) ... Brandon Parks is averaging 12.8 points at home this season while shooting 62.7 percent (32-51) ... Parks is averaging 14.8 points in the last 4 games ... Kent State has out scored the opposition 35-12 in the second half in points off turnovers the last two games (19-7 tonight).
