Kent State Wins 18th Straight At Home With 83-64 Victory Over UNC Wilmington

KENT, Ohio —The Kent State men’s basketball team set a program record with its 18th consecutive home win, posting an 83-64 victory over UNC Wilmington at the M.A.C. Center on Sunday evening. The Golden Flashes improve to 3-0 on the season behind a stout defensive effort that held the Seahawks (2-2) to 37 points below their season average of 101.0 ppg.

Dominating the interior for Kent State, senior forward Julian Sullinger (Columbus, Ohio/ Fork Union Mil. Acad. Va.) and junior center Brandon Parks (Bunker Hill, Pa./ Maconaquah) combined for 27 points and 15 rebounds as KSU outscored UNC Wilmington 48-22 in the paint. Leading by four at halftime (40-36), the Golden Flashes went on a 13-4 run that included eight points from Sullinger to create a double-digit lead. The senior forward shot a perfect 7-7 from the floor and 4-5 from the free-throw line to earn a season-high 18 points.

“Julian was great and we knew that we needed him to play well,” Head Coach Geno Ford said, “The fact that he was able to go 7-for-7 then 4-for-5 at the line was a huge factor. We tried to get it to him and he delivered for the majority of the game.”

Junior guard Chris Singletary (Chicago, Ill./Florida Prep.) carried Kent State the rest of the way with a career and game high 23 points, 16 of which came in the second half. Singletary also added a team best six assists, matching his career high.

“I thought we competed harder in the second half,” Ford said, “We challenged them to play a little bit harder and I thought we competed a little more.”

While the Golden Flashes took control of the game in the second half with offensive outbursts by Sullinger and Singletary, the first have was not so clear-cut. The Golden Flashes started off hot with a 7-0 run, but the Seahawks came back to only trail by four points at halftime, even taking a 34-33 lead with just under 2 minutes left in the opening half after a 14-5 run.

However, the KSU defense locked down the Seahawks after halftime holding them to just 28 points, and 24 percent field goal shooting (7-29). Kent State forced 19 turnovers, which it converted to 29 points and outrebounded UNC Wilmington 39-35.

While Kent State dominated defensively, they also had a strong game offensively as well. The Golden Flashes shot 50 percent from the field and had 19 assists on 33 field goals. Ten different players found their name in the scoring column for KSU. The reigning MAC Player of the Year, Al Fisher, (Pennsauken, N.J. /Redlands (Okla.) added 17 points and four assists to follow up his 35 point perfromance on Wednesday at Saint Louis.

Guard Chad Tomko led the Seahawks with 19 points while Johnny Wolf added 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Kent State is set to travel to Texas for the continuation of the South Padre Island Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Golden Flashes will face Illinois on Friday before taking on either Texas A&M or Tulsa on Saturday, then have a date with defending national champion Kansas next Monday before returning home next Thursday to face St. Mary's, CA and Western Carolina.

NOTES: Kent State has the nation’s ninth longest winning streak at 18 games ... Kent State has won by a combined 60 points in their first two home games this season. In both games, the Golden Flashes scored 83 points ... It was the most points in a game by Julian Sullinger since scoring 20 against Bowling Green March 1, 2007. This was the first time Sullinger reached double figures in back-to-back games since his sophomore season (17 vs. Toledo 2/6/07 and 12 at Western Michigan 2/11/07) ... Geno Ford is just the second coach in Kent State’s 93-year history to win his first three games (Jim Christian, 6-0 in 2002-03).
