UFC on FOX 11: Browne vs Werdum Picks and Predictions!!!

UFC on FOX 11, April 19th, Orlando, Florida

    Fight Card
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    Travis Browne vs. Fabricio Werdum
    Liz Carmouche vs. Miesha Tate
    Edson Barboza vs. Donald Cerrone
    Yoel Romero vs. Brad Tavares
Rafael dos Anjos vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
    Thiago Alves vs. Seth Baczynski
    Pat Healy vs. Jorge Masvidal
    Estevan Payan vs. Alex White
    Caio Magalhaes vs. Luke Zachrich
    Jordan Mein vs. Hernani Perpetuo
    Ray Borg vs. Dustin Ortiz
    Mirsad Bektic vs. Chas Skelly
    Derrick Lewis vs. Jack May

Some decent dogs here. FOTN candidate: Barboza vs Cerrone, Dos Anjos vs Nurmagomedov. Alves looking to continue his momentum, Healy off a cheating stint. Alex White a newcomer with lots of potential. An overrated vs underrated women's fight...

Mirsad Bektic (146) vs. Chas Skelly (145)
Derrick Lewis (256) vs. Jack May (252.5)

    Leans in italics.

Ray Borg, Hernani Perpetuou, and Alex White are all up-and-comers that look good. Caio Magalhaes looking to get back on track (debut jitters last time out?). Thiago Alves fighting back in UFC after several surgeries and two year+ layoff vs a lanky Seth Baczynski who is tall and long for the division. Masvidal changed his diet and looks much slimmer vs Healy off an overturned win because of failing a drug test. Yoel Romero looks MASSIVE but fighting Brad Tavares who may not be motivated for this fight (wanted a higher-ranked opponent). Carmouche looks even more ripped than her last fights, and Tate looks slim as well. Great to see these fighters. Looks like a great card tonight! Lots of value I think.

Dustin Ortiz won a split decision over Ray Borg. 0-1 on the night.

Very tough and scrappy fight. I thought Borg did enough, had Ortiz's back late in the second and most of the third. Very close fight, but came out on the losing end. I scored it 29-28 Borg.

Jordan Mein won split decision over Hernani Perpetuo. 0-2 on the night.

Mein was able to use his length and get in and out vs the kickboxer. Perpetuo more of a counter-puncher couldn't find his range at all during the fight and tried to turn it into a brawl. Midway through the third he had Mein in a deep kneebar, but guess he didn't have the gas to finish it, even though Mein was visibly grimmacing. FWIW I scored it 29-28 Mein.

Alex White wins via KO 1st round over Estevan Payan. 1-2 on the night. White looks like he has a pretty good chin, ate a bunch of hard shots, was able to knock Payan down, then was out and ate a bunch of shots on the ground. Referee calls it and Payan wakes up and believes it's a bad stoppage. Payan was out and ate about a half-dozen uncontested shots to the dome. Impressive kicks from White, but dropped his hands a few times while coming in.

Really great to see Masvidal work his striking at length and wow his takedown defense was pretty amazing. He wins a unanimous decision.

Thiago Alves and Seth Baczynski was FOTN so far tonight. Alves kicking was amazing and wow was Baczynski tough as hell. Took a lot of leg kicks and stuck in there. Landed a bunch of left hooks to Thiago's eye and swole it up real good. 2/2 in my parlay so far.

Khabib Nurmagomedov wins unanimous decision over Rafael Dos Anjos. Khabib is a fearless striker and just amazing when it comes to controlling his opponent. Dos Anjos had a couple of submission attempts but none were close to finishing. Khabib rolled by Dos Anjos easy. Parlay 3-0 so far

Yoel Romero beats Brad Tavares in unanimous decision. 2-2 in singles so far. Romero's wrestling is the best in MMA and his takedowns are spectacularly amazing. He was able to get inside against the better striker in Tavares. Yoel looked really good and used his strengths very well.

Sadly the last two fights didn't go my way.

Miesha Tate won a split decision over Liz Carmouche. Tate/Carmouche was very close with the judges giving Tate the second round. I'll have to rewatch the fight, but I initially gave it to Carmouche. Tate won the third obviously. Very close, but no cigar.

Fabricio Werdum wins a unanimous decision over Travis Browne. Browne/Werdum to round out the parlay didn't work. First, Werdum was able to withstand Hapa's pressure in the first, and land some shots of his own. It was like Hapa didn't believe anyone could trade with him, or rather he didn't have a contingency plan if someone could. Werdum has been through some wars and has developed some great striking to go with his obviously world-class BJJ. After Travis got mauled late in the first and early in the second, he was gassed and there was no power. Werdum was able to pick him apart for the unanimous decision. I scored it 50-45 but a case for 50-44 as well.

                    Singles: 2-3
                    Parlays: 0-1
