Last week, the West Virginia Mountaineers became bowl-eligible following a 31-21 victory over UCF. However, West Virginia Head Coach Neal Brown may need another victory this Saturday to keep his tenure in Morgantown intact. In many ways, the Mountaineers have had a disappointing season following a 9-4 SU campaign last year. The Mountaineers offense has struggled behind senior QB Garrett Greene, and the defense currently ranks 97th in the FBS in total defense. Needless to say, Brown may be in a situation where he is given the boot regardless of Saturday’s outcome, but West Virginia will attempt to end the season on a positive note when they travel to Lubbock for a date with the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders survived a thrilling 58-46 shootout with Oklahoma State last week to improve to 7-4 on the season. The Red Raiders and Cowboys went back and forth down the field for nearly 60 minutes of play before LB Jacob Rodriguez recovered a fumble for a touchdown late in the 4th quarter to give the Red Raiders the two-score lead. In the end, both Texas Tech and Oklahoma State produced more than 500 yards of total offense in the exciting shootout. Despite the strong offensive performance, the Red Raiders defense continued to struggle which has been a common theme throughout the season. In fact, the Red Raiders defense has allowed 35 or more points in 4 of the last five games, and that is the reason that Texas Tech is a mere 3.5-point favorite against the Mountaineers this Saturday.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Analysis

Last week, I was heavily on the Red Raiders in their match-up against Oklahoma State. I simply thought Texas Tech’s offense was far too strong for an Oklahoma State offense that had downright struggled significantly in recent weeks. While the bet may have paid off, it was not pretty for the Texas Tech defense. The Red Raiders defense was shredded on the ground and through the air. I fear that may be the case again this week. Though West Virginia QB Garrett Greene continues to struggle, the Mountaineers still have a strong running game with tailbacks Jaheim White and CJ Donaldson. If you combine the rushing threat of Greene into the mix, I fear that Texas Tech may struggle heavily again this week, and perhaps that makes things easier in the passing game for the West Virginia offense as well.

While West Virginia’s offense has struggled, the defense has struggled more, and that is another scary thought against a Texas Tech offense that can get rolling on the ground or through the air. RB Tahj Brooks has been playing extremely well and has produced 1,317 yards with 14 touchdowns on the ground. Meanwhile, QB Behren Morton and the Texas Tech passing attack have been downright lethal. Wideouts Josh Kelly and Caleb Douglas have become a mismatch for opposing Big 12 defenses, which have kept things open down the field for the Red Raider’s offense. With Morton continuing to play well and mix in the ground threat with Brooks in the backfield, this Texas Tech offense has the ability to keep any defense on their heels, much less a defense the caliber of West Virginia that is allowing nearly 400 total yards per game.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Betting Prediction

The total for this game may seem very high at 65 points. However, Texas Tech has shattered that mark in four of their last five games. With the Red Raiders’ defense continuing to play terribly and the offense continuing to play really well, this match-up appears to be another that will favor a lot of points. As a result, I like the over-to-cash again this week for Texas Tech!
