One week after turning heads with an ultra-impressive performance in primetime,
the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin Cajuns look to keep their
four-game win streak ragin in another ESPN2 Tuesday Night Sun Belt Conference
showdown at Liberty Bank Stadium against the Arkansas State Red
Wolves.
The Ragin Cajuns pounded the ball on Western Kentucky last week, racking up 254 yards rushing (4.9 per carry) behind the three-headed monster of RBs Alonzo Harris and Elijah McGuire and QB Terrance Broadway. With the Red Wolves as the only other team in the Sun Belt without a loss, if the Cajuns can string together another strong performance on the road this week their hold on first place could become a headlock.
The Red Wolves snapped a two game losing streak the last time they stepped between the stripes (Oct. 12) with a, 48-24, victory over Idaho in Liberty Bank Stadium. With back-to-back losses to Memphis and Missouri going into the game, the Vandals were the exact remedy for Arkansas State who ran up 565 yards of offense in the lopsided win.
The Ragin Cajuns are getting some surprising love from Las Vegas too, as they open their second consecutive Sun Belt road game as 2.5- or 3-point favorites depending on where youre wagering. The public will likely take a long look at Lafayette this week, especially with as strong a ground game that they displayed last Tuesday on ESPN2.
As of press time an over/under total has yet to be released.
It doesnt take long to see where the obvious offensive advantage Broadway and the Cajuns will likely have on Tuesday, since the Arkansas State defense is one of the worst allowing 194.2 per game on the ground thus far. Even in two of the Red Wolves wins they gave up 34 and 24 points, so its safe to say that Arkansas State is defensively challenged and that looks like an easy mark the way the Cajuns Harris and McGuire were running the ball last week.
But of course the Red Wolves can play a little offense, as they rack up 480 yards a game behind quarterback Adam Kennedy, a senior transfer from Utah State coming off a career-best 4 TD game against Idaho. The Ragin Cajuns defense is playing its best football right now, and Arkansas State does have a tendency to hurt themselves at times (over 110 yards in penalties vs. Idaho).

Arkansas State has beaten the Cajuns in two straight had-to-head, including last season when they ran it up on them in their house in Lafayette, 50-27. Dont think the Cajuns have forgotten that game. Lafayette has been the better wager through the years however, as they ran off four straight against the spread wins before last years memorable loss, and have covered in 6 of the last 8 meetings.
Lafayette is traditionally a strong road team (21-8 ATS in last 29 road games), but remember this is their second straight road trip in the Sun Belt after spending last week away from school in Bowling Green playing Western Kentucky, so they may struggle to get their legs early.
Arkansas State is 4-1 ATS on Tuesdays in their history, and theyve also gone 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 Sun Belt games, so there are a few betting trends to make you like the home underdog in this spot on Tuesday.
Badger’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: On paper, Louisiana Lafayette appears to be the better team. Arkansas St. has dominated this matchup on their home turf though, so for that reason, I’m betting the Red Wolves on the moneyline at +120.
