This Saturday in Dallas, Texas, we have the annual game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns known as the Red River Rivalry.
This game has been played since 1900. Since that time, Texas holds a 61-44-5 series lead over the Sooners. For many years, this game decided the winner of the Big 12 Conference and in many cases it played a major part in the national championship. Just last year, Oklahoma came in as one of the top teams in the nation. Texas, still struggling to become relevant again, upset the Sooners 24-17 to give head coach Charlie Strong his biggest win as the Longhorns head coach. Can the Horns repeat as upset winners?
The point spread on this game has the Sooners as the 10.5 point favorite, while the total points are set at 73.5.

As we speak, on Tuesday afternoon, the betting public is split on the action. It is very rare for a game of this magnitude to be a 50/50 split. However, the total points has the public 64% on the side of the over. Both teams this season are 2-2 overall. Texas is 2-2 against the spread while Oklahoma is 1-3 during this disappointing campaign.
Texas has been trying to get back in contention for a national title for some time. This seasons started out great with a huge overtime win against Notre Dame. At that time, it seemed that Charlie Strong was getting this program over the hump and back on the national stage. Since starting this season 2-0, the Longhorns have dropped their last two games and once again Charlie Strong is on the hot seat. Much of the Longhorns downfall is the fact that they have the 116th ranked scoring defense in the nation. They give up an average of over 38 a game and their record will not improve until this is fixed. Offensively, Texas is one of the best in the nation. They average over 41 points a game. This weekend, the key to winning or at least covering the spread is for Texas to finally play some defense. Last season, both sides of the ball played really well when it mattered. Oklahoma has already had a rough start to 2016 and if Texas does not bring their A Game…things will get bad!
Oklahoma came into this season as one of the top teams and had expectations to compete for a National Title. Well after a week one los to Houston then yet another loss to Ohio State, the Sooners sit at 2-2 and the title hopes are gone. Yes they can still win the Big 12 but this weekend was a must. Oklahoma, just like Texas, has one of the nation’s worst scoring defenses. Allowing over 35 points per game, the Sooners are ranked 103rd in the FBS. As for offense, Oklahoma is ranked in the top in offense averaging almost 40 points per game. Everyone thinks that this game will be high scoring…everyone. The key for Oklahoma is for Baker Mayfield and Samaje Perine to get going. If Oklahoma can score, I do have more faith in their defense than I do Texas’. If this game is somehow kept in the mid 20s, then Oklahoma wins. A shootout, and it is anyones ball game.
This one is tough. Oklahoma is upset. They had such high goals coming into 2016 and they have already fallen short after just four games. Texas, well, they came out of the gate and was so hot and now they again are looking like a mediocre team and the alumni and fans are not happy. This spread is a total toss up…total. And when that happens, I am always going to take the double digit dog. I think Oklahoma wins, but I like Texas to keep it respectable. Oklahoma will win this game 30-24.
