What a great game we have this Saturday at 3:30pm on Fox when the 5th ranked and unbeaten TCU Horned Frogs roll into Boone Pickens Stadium to take on the also no loss and 12th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. Both teams are 8-0 and both teams are very much alive in not only the Big 12 title race, but also for a spot in the second college football playoff. This will be the fourth straight season that these two teams have faced off as conference foes, and so far, Oklahoma State has the 2-1 advantage. In 2012 and 2013, the Cowboys had two very convincing wins over the Horned Frogs, but last season in Waco, TCU blew out Okie State by a 42-9 score. I will be honest, I had TCU as one of my potential final four teams, but I never thought that Oklahoma State would make it this far unscathed. Well, here in week 10, something has to give.
The line opens with TCU as a five point road favorite while the over under in total points has been set at 79. That seems like a high number, but its the Big 12, some of their final scores look more like basketball than college football. So far against the spread this season, Okie State has the edge covering in five of their eight games while TCU is 4-4 against the lines so far in 2015. According to the betting public, TCU is the play with them getting 59% of the early action. Also, the over is looking like the trend as well with 64% of the early dough riding that the game will soar over 79.
TCU has been a force on the national scene for quite a few years now. They have a Rose Bowl under their belt as well as what I thought was a pure snub in last years college football final four. I don’t care who you are or what you say, if the 3rd ranked team in the nation wins their final game by 50+ points, there is no way, and I mean NO WAY that they should drop at all…much less 2-3 spots. Here we are in 2015 and TCU at this time is on the outside looking in again. They have been ranked as high as two this season, but currently they sit as the 5th ranked team in the country. TCU appears to be on a mission this season and trying to make sure that they are not again left out of the mix in January. Trevone Boykin has this offense clicking on all cylinders through eight weeks. The Heisman Trophy hopeful has TCU ranked 2nd in the nation in scoring, only behind Baylor, at 48 points per game. The passing offense is in the top five as well averaging over 385 yards per contest while still being able to get another 225 a game on the ground. This offense is sick! The defense for TCU is not too shabby either. Don’t get me wrong, they are no Florida, Alabama, or Temple defense, but they are only giving up 24 a game and when your offense is scoring at will, that is a very good combination. With all that said, this weekend will be very interesting. This will be the toughest test so far in 2015, and TCU cannot have a let down. One loss for TCU and their dreams of a college playoff are pretty much over. The key to this game will be defense. TCU cannot live in numerous shootouts week after week. At some point someone will catch up to them. TCU needs to slow down this Oklahoma State attack which is almost as impressive as TCU’s. Defense, Defense, Defense…that is the key for the Frogs.
I never saw this coming with Oklahoma State being unbeaten so late in the 2015 season. To this point though, they have played a rather week schedule, but you still have to tip your cap to them for not having a letdown before getting to this point. Oklahoma State is not far behind TCU in the scoring category. The Cowboys themselves are averaging 44 points a game and giving up 24. They also are passing for over 350 a contest too. These two teams are very similar, but like I said earlier, something has to give this Saturday. There really is not much more to say about this game than it will come down to who can make a few stops. Just like TCU, Okie State needs to D up…at least a little. The home crowd will be fired up and Boone Pickens Stadium will be off the chain, but the players got to make plays.
What a tough one. This game is going to be fun, very fun. Most of the cash is riding on TCU as the road favorite, but I think Oklahoma State is up for the challenge to a degree. I know this will be a shootout, and I still think when the smoke clears that TCU will be the one at 9-0, but I like this game coming down to the final seconds. TCU wins a shootout 51-49 and Oklahoma State gets the cover, while TCU jumps back up into the nations top four.
Bob’s Pick to Cover the Point Spread: TAKE THE OKLAHOMA STATE COWBOYS +5 AND OVER THE POSTED TOTAL!
