The BiG Ten conference will feature yet another pivotal conference rivalry clash featuring two combatants who have very quickly evolved into a state of acrimony. The Penn State Nittany Lions will head to College Park, Maryland to square off with the Maryland Terrapins at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium in a renewal of The Mid-Atlantic Melee on Saturday, November 25th, 2017. The kick-off time is slotted for 3:30 PM ET and will be aired for audiences on the B1G Network. This contest is strictly for bragging rights as Penn State cannot play for the B1G Conference Championship as they have been eliminated by virtue of losses to Michigan State and Ohio State. Maryland is fighting for a potential bowl berth and may get an opportunity if they secure a fifth win here against PSU. Though this is a rivalry game, the Nittany Lions have owned Maryland as they are 37-2-1 SU all-time against the Terps. Last year, Penn State went to work on the Terrapins in State College when they routed Maryland 38-14 in Happy Valley in 2016.
After losing two straight, the Nittany Lions have responded beautifully with two consecutive wins. Penn State has failed to cover in their last three outings but nevertheless they own a 56-44 victory against Nebraska at home, last weekend. The story of Penn States season was their epic defeat at The Horseshoe in Columbus, Ohio when it fell to Ohio State in what was a historic collapse. A then #2-ranked and undefeated Nittany Lions squared off with a #6 Ohio State in a primetime slugfest between two constituents fighting for a College Football Playoff berth. Penn State would follow up the heartbreak with another loss against Michigan State in the Battle for The Land Grant Trophy. The Nittany Lions were edged by out a field goal against the Spartans in East Lansing. Penn State would respond with a demolition of Rutgers in Happy Valley and then the aforementioned win against Nebraska.
The Terrapins looked to have tremendous promise in the early stages of the 2017 season. Maryland stormed into Austin, Texas in the season opener and handed the Texas Longhorns a loss on its own turf. The Terrapins would get to 3-1 SU out of the gate before they would go 1-6 SU to its current station. At one discussions began as to whether Maryland would enter the Top 25. Now, the Terrapins are praying they can get into a bowl game. That can only happen if they win this contest against a team that has simply bullied them all over the gridiron.
Currently in this market, the public have strongly gravitated towards the Nittany Lions. According to consensus data, all are in on Penn State. 100% of the cash and the tickets are with PSU. As a result, the market has spiked significantly in an abrupt period of time as we have seen this market rise by 3.5 points from the open. Regardless of the circumstances, 100% of the consensus also like the Nittany Lions in this spot. In Over/Under markets, we have seen the number rise by just half of a point to its current position of 58 indicating action on the Over.
Targeting overreactions is something we practice and preach. This market is an archetypal example of a heavy lean by the public as a result of fading a team no one parts of. Teams of this nature are often accompanied by inflated pointed spreads and this is what are seeing take shape with Maryland here. For the Terrapins, they will enter this contest with nothing to lose. This makes them extremely dangerous, be that if they win they have a shot at a bowl game. If they lose, they end their season with the grisly sentiment they have been immersed in. Penn State can still potentially make a New Years Six Bowl Game and such an event would be the only possible consolation prize that the Nittany Lions could acquire and cherish given the fact they were once the #2 team in all the land. Thus, the pressure will be on PSU here and we cant trust them with this kind of lumber against an opponent at home who will be playing with reckless abandon.
